Book excerpt: Agricultural Statistics is published each year to meet the diverse need for a reliable reference book on agricultural production, supplies, consumption, facilities, costs, and returns. Its tables of annual data cover a wide variety of facts in forms suited to most common use. The estimates for crops, livestock, and poultry made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are prepared mainly to give timely current state and national totals and averages. They are based on data obtained by sample surveys of farmers and of people who do business with farmers. The survey data are supplemented by information from the Census of Agriculture taken every five years. Being estimates, they are subject to revision as more data become available from commercial or government sources. Unless otherwise indicated, the totals for the United States shown in the various tables on area, production, numbers, price, value, supplies, and disposition are based on official Department estimates. They exclude states for which no official estimates are compiled. Extensive data includes statistics for the following: -Grain and Feed -Cotton, Tobacco, Sugar Crops, and Honey -Oilseeds, Fats, and Oils -Vegetables and Melons -Hay, Seeds, and Minor Field Crops -Cattle, Hogs, and Sheep -Dairy and Poultry -Insurance, Credit & Cooperatives -Agricultural Conservation & Forestry -Consumption & Family Living -Fertilizers & Pesticides Miscellaneous Agricultural Statistics such as Foreign Agricultural Trade Statistics including exports, fisheries and more. Book excerpt: This open access book provides an evidence-based roadmap for revitalising Indian agriculture while ensuring that the growth process is efficient, inclusive, and sustainable, and results in sustained growth of farmers’ incomes. The book, instead of looking for global best practices and evaluating them to assess the possibility of replicating these domestically, looks inward at the best practices and experiences within Indian states, to answer questions such as -- how the agricultural growth process can be speeded up and made more inclusive, and financially viable; are there any best practices that can be studied and replicated to bring about faster growth in agriculture; does the prior hypothesis that rapid agricultural growth can alleviate poverty faster, reduce malnutrition, and augment farmers’ incomes stand? To answer these questions, the book follows four broad threads -- i) Linkage between agricultural performance, poverty and malnutrition; ii) Analysing the historical growth performance of agricultural sector in selected Indian states; iii) Will higher agricultural GDP necessarily result in higher incomes for farmers; iv) Analysing the current agricultural policy environment to evaluate its efficiency and efficacy, and consolidate all analysis to create a roadmap. These are discussed in 12 chapters, which provide a building block for the concluding chapter that presents a roadmap for revitalising Indian agriculture while ensuring growth in farmers’ incomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rajasthan is a land of extremes and the present book indicates the great variety in relief, climate, soil, vegetation, agricultural activity and mineral deposits. Rajasthan is endowed with diversified natural resources. The survival of mankind has always been supported by nature and its resources for centuries man has been exploiting these resources for his survival and development. In the rapid march of progress, the balance that needs to be maintained between exploitation and regeneration was however largely ignored. With the increase in population there has thus been great pressure on these resources leading to their scarcity and degradation. Proper Planning for management of growth is possible only when relevant information of resource, population, availability of social and industrial infrastructure and the trends in growth are known. The aim of the books is comprehension and understanding through functional co-relation Detailed in information is furnished for the purpose of illustrating a point and general functional relationship. The Subject has been treated in its regional aspects and an attempt has been made to preserve a balance between the physical, human and economic aspects in this book. In a book dealing with a state such as Rajasthan where agriculture, animal husbandry and mining industry are of a paramount importance, it is natural that much space has been devoted to these aspects of economic geography. This book provides updated information regarding land, people available resources and infrastructural facilities mainly through maps, graphs, charts and tables. I hope the book will be very useful for planner s researchers, teachers, Students, NGO and all those interested in developmental activities.

Book excerpt: This report describes the development of the near real-time drought monitoring and reporting system for the region, which currently includes Afghanistan, Pakistan and western parts of India. The system is based on drought-related indices derived from high-resolution remote-sensing data (MODIS). The unique feature of the study is the development of regression relationships between drought-related indices obtained from MODIS and AVHRR data, which have different pixel-resolution and optical characteristics. The goal is to make the system available, via Internet, to all stakeholders in the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Agricultural produce markets have a special role in the development of a country having predominantly agricultural economy. Therefore, regulation in the marketing of agricultural produce has widely been adopted in India. But, without a good transport network, the regulated markets have no meaning because only transportation can provide access to and from the markets for the marketable goods. Furthermore, there are many facets of marketing and transportation. It is in this backdrop a study having an integrated approach to cover all the major dimensions of both the factors is required for overall assessment and planning. In present study an effort has been made to make an analysis of various relevant factors and aspects in integrated manner and find out ameliorative measures in order to increase the efficiency of various regulated markets mainly by improving transport network. The book tries to analyse the spatio-temporal features of regulated markets/marketing and transport network in the canal irrigated region of north-western Rajasthan. It also attempts to have a view of the functioning of regulated markets on the basis of an empirical study to evaluate the marketing efficiency and performance of various markets. An effort has also been made to identify trade areas of various regulated markets of the region and to determine hierarchy of those markets. And, finally, it proposes certain methods on the basis of which future projections can be made by setting up of yardsticks to achieve realistic targets."

Book excerpt: The book discusses important developments emerging around the land questions in India in the context of India’s neoliberal economic development and its changing political economy. It covers many issues that have been impinging the political economy in land and livelihoods in India since the 1990s, examining the land question from diverse methodological standpoints. Most of the chapters rely on evidence generated through primary surveys in different parts of the country. The book, via its diversity of approaches and methodologies, brings out new and hitherto unexplored and/or less researched issues on the emerging land question in India. The range of issues addressed in the volume encompasses the contemporary developments in the political economy of land, land dispossession, SEZs, agrarian changes, urbanisation and the drive for the commodification of land across India. The authors also examine role of the state in promoting the capitalist transformation in India and continuities and changes emerging in the context of land liberalisation and market-friendly economic reforms.

Water is mostly used for irrigation purpose in India. The rainfall over the country is unequal, irregular. Therefore, in order to meet the water requirement of the crops, it is very essential to provide facilities for irrigation. The multiple cropping patterns can only be possible if there is sufficient irrigation water. Irrigation was developed in five years plans but it was contrary to what was hoped. Development was not done equally in all states, thus, paving a way for regional disparities. Rajasthan is geographically the largest state of India. Its geographical area is 3,42,239 sq. km which is 10.42 per cent of the country and where 5.67 per cent of population resides but the surface water of this part is just 1 per cent of the total surface water of the country. Rajasthan is an agriculture dominant state; its 65 per cent of population is dependent on agriculture therefore in the state water is used the most for irrigation for agriculture and so the government emphasized on irrigation in five years plan. It has led to the increase of irrigated area, agricultural production has also increased by disparities have been found due to unequal distribution of irrigation facilities, moreover, the development of irrigation was not proper.
