Book excerpt: Based on the study of a cross-section of respondents covering tractor-owners, bullock-owners and non-owners of draft power, the book tries to show that as compared to other farming sections, mechanised farmers have greater use of green revolution as manifested in cropping pattern and intensity use of high yielding varieties, fertilizer consumption and farm yields and incomes. Suggests that technological advancement if promoted and supported vigorously is likely to eliminate or neutralize the hold of traditional institutional frame work and non-scientific beliefs in addition to promoting agricultural production and productivity and rural incomes and employment.

Book excerpt: Mechanization is a process of replacing biological sources of energy involving animal and human labour to mechanized sources of energy. Farm mechanization indicates the use of machines for conducting agricultural operations replacing the traditional methods which involve human and animal labour. In the period 2004-05 to 2011-12, robust growth in the secondary and tertiary sectors led to significant job creation in agriculture sector. Tractors and power tillers have been driving the farm mechanization in India. Tractor sales have grown at a CAGR of 9.0 % in Financial Year (FY) 05-15 to around 5.5 lakh tractors in FY15 (around 2.3 lakh in FY2005) whereas sales of power tillers have grown at a CAGR of 10.6% in FY2005 to 2015 to 48,000 power tillers in FY2015 (17,841 in FY2005). Farm mechanisation is a fuel to agriculture production now days. As several studies indicate the mechanisation not only reduced the drudgery of manual labour and it enables the efficient and judicious use of resources. The increased agricultural production and productivity over the decades is coupled with the farm power availability. High labour intensive crops have turned to low labour intensive crops by replacing the mechanical power, which also reduced the cost of production and improved quality of produce led to increased farmers income share.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for the overwhelming majority of the tribal population in India. Agricultural modernization has since long been introduced in the tribal areas of West Bengal, primarily with a view to raise the level of income, standard of living and lifestyle of the tribal people. The present book meant for elucidating the impact as well as adoption of modernization on tribal agriculture. The author has made a critical review of the agricultural modernization and mechanization and also the tradition of tribal agriculture. The author studied empirically the extent and nature of adoption of modern agricultural technology by the Santals and subsequently its impact on the lifestyle of the people in the locality. The obstacles or social-cultural constraints of the Santals towards the adoption of the modern agricultural technology have also been taken into consideration. Social, cultural and economic problems of the Santals have also been studied in connection with the agricultural modernization. The author estimated the maximum return over variable cost from existing cropping pattern followed by the Santals and suggested some appropriate measures to maximize net return by adopting alternative systems of cropping pattern. A close probe has also been made to evaluate the extent and nature of socio-cultural and socio-economic changes among the Santal cultivators due to agricultural modernization. The book would be of much use to the social scientists, researchers, students, planners and policy makers in the field of rural development. Contents Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: Review of Literature; Chapter 3: Concept of Variables; Chapter 4: Study Area and Methodology; Chapter 5: Demographic Profile of the Respondents, Alternative Optimum Plants of Cropping Pattern for Mechanized Farmers, Constraints of Mechanization, Changing Scenario of Mechanized Santal Farmers; Chapter 6: Summary and Conclusions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landlord and his emaciated labourer are symbolic of Indian agriculture. However, this relationship has now changed as large landowners have fallen from their superior position. This volume explores how this emblematic pair is becoming a thing of the past. Structural Transformation and Agrarian Change in India investigates whether family labour farms are gaining prominence as a consequence of the structural transformation of the economy. The authors work alongside Weberian methodology of ideal types and develop different types of family farms; among them family labour farms that rely mainly on family workers, contrasted with capitalist farms that depend on hired labour. Agriculture is shrinking as a part of the total GDP at the same time as agricultural labour is shrinking as part of the total labour force. The changing agrarian structure is explored with the use of unique long-term survey data and statistical models. Results show that India is approaching farm structures that are typical of East and South East Asia, with pluriactive smallholders as the norm. This book successfully criticizes popular narratives about Indian agricultural development as well as simplistic evolutionist, Marxist or neoclassical prognoses. It is of great importance to those who study development economics, development studies and South Asian economics.

Since the primary objective of farming has been to ensure food supply and agricultural raw materials, it is pertinent to examine critically the spatial pattern of modernization and its impact on agricultural productivity and position of food availability and actual food intake in perspective of physio-cultural environment. Findings of this spatio-temporal study will help in identifying the problematic regions still awaiting special efforts for agricultural development through the application of modern methods and techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernisation Of Agriculture Is A Worldwide Trend. Modernisation And Technological Inputs Are Highly Interrelated. Among Technological Innovations, The Mechanization Is Perhaps The Most Critical One. Unfortunately, The History Of Agricultural Policy In Many Developing Countries, Including India, Is Replete With Controversies When It Come To Mechanization. Mechanization Was Dubbed As Anti-Labour, Anti-Employment, Anti-Poor, And Hence Needs To Be Discouraged At Any Cost. Over The Years, The Scare Among Policy Makers About Mechanization Has Receded In Its Intensity But The Phobia Has Not Disappeared. Many Economists Have Also Contributed To The Predicament Of Policy Makers In This Regard. Part Of It Was Ideological And Visibly Anti-Big Farmer Oriented. In This Perspective, Mechanization Was Identified With Large Farms And Big Farmers. The Present Study About The Impact Of Mechanization, Is Able To Pinpoint With A Great Deal Of Accuracy, The Desirable Consequences And Welcome Features Of Mechanization. It Is Able To Explore The Effects Of Mechanization On Farm Income, Employment, Productivity And Economic Efficiency In Crop Production. The Arguments That Have Been Made In The Present Study Regarding The Social Costs And Benefits Of The Existing Pattern Of Mechanization Leads To The Conclusion That Net Social Benefits Are Positive. Analysis Of Data From The Present Study Indicates That The Existing Pattern Of Mechanization Does Not Add To Unemployment In The Region, Where The Thrust Is To Expand Agricultural Output, Because Machines Are Used In Response To Worthwhile Techno-Economic Considerations And High Cost Of Draught Power. As Machines Help To Save Resources, Hitherto Allotted To Maintain Draught Animals They Enable An Increase In Output By Raising Crop Intensity And Yield Per Acre. Their Use May Be Socially More Beneficial In The Context Of Shortages And High Prices Of Agricultural Commodities. The Increase In The Scale Of Operation, The Rise In The Crop Intensity And Yield Per Acre Made Possible By Mechanization Can Lead To A Net Increase In Farm Employment. Being In An Age Of Technology, We Simply Cannot Ignore This Beneficial Fallout From Mechanization. Although, The Empirical Work Is Confined To Andhra Pradesh, In Its Analytical Framework, Methodology And Discussion Of Relevant Issues It Has Much Wider Application. It Is A Major Contribution To The Research And Would Be Useful To Economists, Agricultural Scientists And Policy Makers.
