Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, Agrarian Change in Egypt based on extensive original research as well as field survey of eighteen villages, analyses and explains the changes in the agricultural sector in Egypt. It shows how various policies and other factors have affected agricultural output and how developments triggered by the ‘open door policy’ such as inflation, migration, and the shift in the pricing system have affected agriculture. The Egyptian experience is fairly typical of agrarian change in many parts of the developing world where government reforms in the 1960s and 1970s tried to combine considerations of efficiency and equity but ended up with stagnation. The Egyptian case therefore provides a good example of the general crisis in agriculture in the developing world. This book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of agricultural economy, development studies and political economy.

This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a blueprint for the allocation of public expenditures “in” and “for” agriculture at the dis-aggregated state level and suggests a reorientation in favour of disadvantaged regions where the marginal returns on additional investments would be higher. It provides insights into the inter-linkages between public expenditures, private investment, rural poverty, and agriculture productivity from a regional perspective to reflect upon spatial differences in the welfare effects of various investments, subsidies, and policies. The book focuses on agricultural growth and rural poverty reduction through public and private investments, non-farm employment, and other pathways to the formulation of appropriate policies at the dis-aggregated state level. It presents new evidence based on advanced econometric tools for analysing and understanding the relationship between public and private investments in agriculture and input subsidies (fertilizer, power, irrigation, and credit) together with their impacts at the dis-aggregated state level. The book also deliberates on an income based direct support system for farmers as an alternative to the existing input price subsidy regime. Accordingly, the book offers valuable insights not only for researchers working on poverty alleviation, rural economy, and agricultural growth, but also for policymakers.

Book Synopsis The Great Ascent by : Inderjit Singh
Download or read book The Great Ascent written by Inderjit Singh and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty is the grim reality for some 400 million people - mostly small farmers and agricultural laborers - in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. To remedy the problem, South Asian governments and international agencies have focused on raising the productivity of small farms and increasing opportunities for rural employment. This strategy, however, has long been criticized for doing the poor more harm than good. The author challenges that pessimistic view by critically reviewing a wealth of evidence from recent academic literature and the World Bank's operational experience. He shows that rapid agricultural growth has benefited all classes of the poor and that the "great ascent" from poverty to a more materially rewarding life has begun. A variety of programs intended to help the poor directly are examined in detail. Research, extension, and training activities are evaluated for their effectiveness in promoting the adoption of high-yielding varieties of cereal, spreading new farming technology, encouraging multiple cropping, and increasing the cultivation of high-value crops. The author also considers programs in dairying, poultry farming, commercial fishing, and forestry and argues that policymakers have neglected these potentially profitable activities. Finally, he discusses the dismal failure of land reforms in reducing poverty.
