Download or read book Bioenergetics written by Peter Gräber and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioenergetics, the topic of volume 5 of this Series, is concerned with the energetics, the kinetics, and the mechanisms of energy conversion in biological systems. This phenomenon can be investigated on diffe rent levels of complexity. On a global level the role of biological pro cesses for the steady state of our enviroment is considered. At the physiological level, the relation between energy input and the physiolo gical state of an organism is of interest, while at the cellular level the biochemical pathways for degradation and synthesis of all relevant substrates is investigated. At present the majority of bioenergetic stu dies pertain to the molecular level. The processes in a cell are cataly zed by a large number of proteins called enzymes. The enzymes in volved in energy transduction can be considered as molecular ma chines which transform energy from one form into another, or transfer energy from one process to another. Living systems operate far from equilibrium and are open in the ther modynamic sense, i. e. they exchange energy and matter with the sur roundings. Chapter 1 presents the principles of non equilibrium thermo dynamics applied to biological systems. About 0. 05% of the energy from the sunlight which reaches the surface of the earth is used by plants and algae as well as some bacteria to synthesize organic com pounds, and thus supplies all organisms with the energy necessary for life.
Book Synopsis Digital Health Innovation for Consumers, Clinicians, Connectivity and Community by : A. Georgiou
Download or read book Digital Health Innovation for Consumers, Clinicians, Connectivity and Community written by A. Georgiou and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, health informaticians have established the knowledge base and practical expertise to facilitate the development of ever-more capable technical systems, increased connectivity, expanded access and the greater mobility of e-health and information management systems, and we have witnessed the evolution from simple computer-based records to systems allowing intra-organisational, national, and even international communication and information exchange. This book presents 20 of the papers delivered at the 24th Australian National Health Informatics Conference (HIC 2016), held in Melbourne, Australia in July 2016. The primary theme of the 2016 conference is Digital Health Innovation for Consumers, Clinicians, Connectivity and Community. The papers included here reflect this theme, and highlight the cutting edge research evidence, technology updates and innovations that are fuelling the digital transformation of the healthcare sector. They cover a wide spectrum of fields and encompass major theoretical concepts, examples of key applications of new technologies and important new developments in the field of health informatics. The book provides a current overview of trends in health informatics, and will be of interest to all those involved in the planning, design, implementation and delivery of healthcare today.

Book Synopsis Studies in Early Greek Philosophy by : Jaap Mansfeld
Download or read book Studies in Early Greek Philosophy written by Jaap Mansfeld and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of nineteen articles in Jaap Mansfeld’s Studies in Early Greek Philosophy span the period from Anaximander to Socrates. Solutions to problems of interpretation are offered through a scrutiny of the sources, and also of the traditions of presentation and reception found in antiquity. Excursions in the history of scholarship help to diagnose discussions of which the primum movens may have been forgotten. General questions are treated, for instance the phenomenon of detheologization in doxographical texts, while problems relating to individual philosophers are also discussed. For example, the history of Anaximander’s cosmos, the status of Parmenides’ human world, and the reliability of what we know about the soul of Anaximenes, and of what Philoponus tells us about the behaviour of Democritus’ atoms.
Book Synopsis Land Condition Trend Analysis Avian Database: Ecological Guild-based Summaries by :
Download or read book Land Condition Trend Analysis Avian Database: Ecological Guild-based Summaries written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land Condition Trend Analysis (LCTA) bird database documentation capabilities often are limited to the generation of installation-wide species checklists, estimates of relative abundance, and evidence of breeding activity. The conservation and characterization of biological diversity is becoming a management objective of both governmental and private organizations, and as such, more ecologically descriptive summaries are being required. Ecological guild analyses have been proposed as a means to link wildlife to a specific biodiversity component, and thus represents an option to military trainers in evaluating impacts to wildlife communities. This report documents an LCTA database update that provides selected ecological attributes (particularly for the nesting season) for 676 bird species occurring within the continental United States. This database upgrade provides land managers the capability to: (1) generate ecological guild-based summaries with no additional fieldwork, (2) identify specific groups of birds most likely to be impacted by a spatially discrete training impact, (3) customize the local database by adjusting individual attributes for species specific to the installation, and (4) conveniently cross reference or simply convert all LCTA species codes to more globally recognized American Ornithological Union "AOU numbers" or the Bird Banding Laboratories "Alpha codes."

Book Synopsis The Presocratics at Herculaneum by : Christian Vassallo

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyses in depth the reception of early Greek philosophy in the Epicurean tradition and provides for the first time in scholarship a comprehensive edition, with translation and commentary, of all the Herculanean testimonia to the Presocratics. Among the most significant scientific outcomes, it provides elements for the attribution of an earlier date to the attested tradition of Xenophanes’ scepticism; a complete reconstruction of the Epicurean reception of Democritus; a new reconstruction of the testimonia to Nausiphanes’ concept of physiologia, Anaxagoras’ physics and theology, and Empedocles’ epistemology; new texts for better comparing the doxographical sections of Philodemus’ On Piety with those of Cicero’s On the Nature of the Gods, which update H. Diels’ treatment of this subject in his Doxographi Graeci.
