The book starts by discussing the meaning and significance of agogics in the musical and artistic realm, with reference to the work of Adolphe Appia, Emile-Jaques Dalcroze, and Iannis Xenakis, among others. Its relevance to cartography and mapping is then examined, taking into account the contributions of Ian McHarg, Bill Hillier, Mark Shepard, and Robin Minard. The nature and value of agogic maps, for example in fostering awareness of place and effective organization of spatial development, are described in detail, with reference to case studies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Segrate, Italy. It is explained how agogic maps take advantage of innovative categories and scripting equipment to provide a new mapping instrument for spatial and urban configurations, highlighting the interdependence between aural signals and spatial variables. Book excerpt: Complete Bouguer and isostatic residual gravity maps of the Anadarko basin, Wichita Mountains, and surrounding areas in parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, and Colorado were compiled using gravity data from 11,023 stations. The most prominent features on these maps are gravity highs over the Amarillo-Wichita and Arbuckle uplifts and the Muenster arch. These highs are assumed to be caused by Late Proterozoic-Cambrian high-density gabbroic and volcanic rocks that are believed to be part of an aulacogen. Other features on the maps include (1) a north-northeast-trending high that may be associated with a southern extension of the Midcontinent gravity high, about one degree of longitude west of the Nemaha uplift, (2) an arcuate gravity high in the southeastern corner of the study area that probably represents the southern margin of the North American continent during the Late Proterozoic, (3) a very large gravity low associated with the Arkoma basin and Ouachita Mountains thrust belt, (4) gravity lows associated with most of the Paleozoic basins in the region, (5) no apparent gravity expression of the Nemaha ridge, and (6) broad gravity highs that are probably caused by dense mafic igneous rocks in the basement. These broad gravity highs and the fact that the gravity low over the Anadarko basin is higher over the deepest part of the basin than in other parts of the basin indicate that many, if not most, of the anomalies are caused by differences in basement rock types and densities.

Book excerpt: Heinrich Schenker's theoretical and analytical works claim to resubstantiate the unique artistic presence of the canonic work, and thus reject those musical disciplines such as psychoacoustics and systematic musicology which derive from the natural sciences. In this respect his writing reflects the counter-positivism endemic to the German academic discourse of the first decades of the twentieth century. The rhetoric of this stance, however, conceals a sophisticated programme wherein Schenker situates his project in relation to these sciences, arguing his reading of the musical text as a synthesis of a descriptive psychology and an explanatory historiography (which itself embeds both paleographic and philological assumptions). This book rereads Schenker's project as an attempt to reconstruct music theory as a discipline against the background of the empirical musical sciences of the later nineteenth century.
