Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Friction by : I.L. Singer
Download or read book Fundamentals of Friction written by I.L. Singer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Friction, unlike many books on tribology, is devoted to one specific topic: friction. After introductory chapters on scientific and engineering perspectives, the next section contains the necessary background within the areas of contact mechanics, surfaces and adhesion. Then on to fracture, deformation and interface shear, from the macroscopic behavior of materials in frictional contact to microscopic models of uniform and granular interfaces. Lubrication by solids, liquids and gases is presented next, from classical flow properties to the reorganization of monolayers of molecules under normal and shear stresses. A section on new approaches at the nano- and atomic scales covers the physics and chemistry of interfaces, an array of visually exciting simulations, using molecular dynamics, of solids and liquids in sliding contact, and related AFM/STM studies. Following a section on machines and measurements, the final chapter discusses future issues in friction.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Surface Engineering and Functionally Engineered Materials by : Peter Martin
Download or read book Introduction to Surface Engineering and Functionally Engineered Materials written by Peter Martin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a clear and understandable text for users and developers of advanced engineered materials, particularly in the area of thin films, and addresses fundamentals of modifying the optical, electrical, photo-electric, triboligical, and corrosion resistance of solid surfaces and adding functionality to solids by engineering their surface, structure, and electronic, magnetic and optical structure. Thin film applications are emphasized. Through the inclusion of multiple clear examples of the technologies, how to use them, and the synthesis processes involved, the reader will gain a deep understanding of the purpose, goals, and methodology of surface engineering and engineered materials. Virtually every advance in thin film, energy, medical, tribological materials technologies has resulted from surface engineering and engineered materials. Surface engineering involves structures and compositions not found naturally in solids and is used to modify the surface properties of solids and involves application of thin film coatings, surface functionalization and activation, and plasma treatment. Engineered materials are the future of thin film technology. Engineered structures such as superlattices, nanolaminates, nanotubes, nanocomposites, smart materials, photonic bandgap materials, metamaterials, molecularly doped polymers and structured materials all have the capacity to expand and increase the functionality of thin films and coatings used in a variety of applications and provide new applications. New advanced deposition processes and hybrid processes are being used and developed to deposit advanced thin film materials and structures not possible with conventional techniques a decade ago. Properties can now be engineered into thin films that achieve performance not possible a decade ago.
Book Synopsis Advanced Techniques in Biological Electron Microscopy III by : J.K. Koehler
Download or read book Advanced Techniques in Biological Electron Microscopy III written by J.K. Koehler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a continuation of two prior books on advanced electron microscope techniques. The purpose of this series has been to provide in depth analyses of methods which are considered to be at the leading edge of electron microscopic research procedures with applications in the biological sciences. The mission of the present volume remains that of a source book for the research practitioner or advanced student, especially one already well versed in basic electron optical methods. It is not meant to provide in troductory material, nor can this modest volume hope to cover the entire spectrum of advanced technology now available in electron microscopy. In the past decade, computers have found their way into many research laboratories thanks to the enormous increase in computing power and stor age available at a modest cost. The ultrastructural area has also benefited from this expansion in a number of ways which will be illustrated in this volume. Half of the contributions discuss technologies that either directly or indirectly make extensive use of computer methods.
Download or read book Aging in Thin Metallic Films written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low magnetostriction NiFe and NiFe based ternary films 220A and 340A thick were prepared by thermal evaporation and bias sputtering. A few evaporated films were sputter etched. The films were aged in air with a magnetic bias in the plane of the film and perpendicular or parallel to the easy axis. Changes in uniaxial anisotropy field, coercive force and magnetostriction were measured as a function of time at temperatures of 100 C to 225 C. Films aged below 125 C in easy axis fields had an activation energy of 0.75ev in the case of evaporated NiFe while no change was observed in the case of sputtered or sputter etched NiFe or for a ternary Ni-Fe-Au. All films responded to temperatures above 125 C with activation energies of 1.3 to 2.4 ev. The rate of response was 50 to 1000 times greater in evaporated NiFe than in the other films. All films stored at 150 C in a hard axis field showed a large decrease in anisotropy field. The rate of change was dependent on deposition conditions and annealing temperature. Sputter etching was capable of reorienting the anisotropy axis. (Author).

Book excerpt: Now in its eleventh edition, DeGarmo's Materials and Processes in Manufacturing has been a market-leading text on manufacturing and manufacturing processes courses for more than fifty years. Authors J T. Black and Ron Kohser have continued this book's long and distinguished tradition of exceedingly clear presentation and highly practical approach to materials and processes, presenting mathematical models and analytical equations only when they enhance the basic understanding of the material. Completely revised and updated to reflect all current practices, standards, and materials, the eleventh edition has new coverage of additive manufacturing, lean engineering, and processes related to ceramics, polymers, and plastics.
