In addition, we have little experimental evidence on which to predict behavioral reactions to frustration based on generalizations drawn from the assessments we are able to make. A purpose of the Rosenzweig Picture-Frustration Suday is to assess or determine the characteristic way an individual responds to frustration. Thus, a study of average individuals, previously assessed for reaction to frustration, under controlled experimental conditions would give some explicit information regarding the tenability of predictions based upon this instrument. The attempt was made to keep the frustration task within reasonable expectancy of ongoing behavior of the subjects. The hypothesis was examined that the category of response to the Rosenzweig Picture-Frustration Study, basically, the direction of aggression, extrapunitive, intopunitive, or impunitive, corresponds to differences in reaction and adaptation to frustration. The data indicated by performance variation of the Verbal Reasoning test of the Differential Aptitude Test administered under control and experimental conditions did not support this hypothesis. Suggestions were made as to the limitations of the technique used. The degree to which the Picture-Frustration Study may be amenable to statistical analysis, and the complex of motivation and frustration were discussed.

Book excerpt: Video games can have many effects on players, some of which could be intentional effects (e.g., games designed to train health compliance behaviors), and most of which are unintentional (e.g., violent games, stereotypes, gaming disorder). Some of these areas of research have been seen as controversial, but many of the controversies can be at least partially resolved by considering the learning mechanisms underlying the effects. We describe the General Learning Model in greater detail than has been provided elsewhere, including short-term and long-term mechanisms, processes of learning and forgetting, and moderators of learning. Video games use many of the best practices to train for both mastery and for transfer of learning. The implications for re-interpreting the literature on violent video games and gaming disorder, as well as for applied social psychology broadly defined, are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revision of the Schultz's popular text surveys the field, presenting theory-by-theory coverage of the major theorists who represent the psychoanalytic, neopsychoanalytic, life-span, trait, humanistic, cognitive, behavioral, and social-learning approaches, as well as clinical and experimental work. Where warranted, the authors show how the development of certain theories was influenced by events in a theorist's personal and professional life. This thoroughly revised Seventh Edition now incorporates more examples, tables, and figures to help bring the material to life for students. The new content in this edition reflects the dynamism in the field. The text explores how race, gender, and culture issues figure in the study of personality and in personality assessment. In addition, a final integrative chapter looks at the study of personality theories and suggests conclusions that can be drawn from the many theorists' work.

Book excerpt: This short volume contains papers presented at a special symposium, "The Physiology of Aggression and Defeat," during the MAS meetings in Dallas, Texas, in December, 1968. At a time when we need to understand the basic mechan isms underlying various forms of aggression, these papers report progress toward this goal. Although the many social, psychologic and economic causal mechanisms contributing to aggression have been reasonably well-understood for a number of years, the correlated physiological, biochemical, endocrinological and neurochemical changes taking place in an organism that is either the aggressor or the recipient of aggression have not been studied extensively, and the limited available data in the past have often been in con siderable conflict. These eight papers demonstrate that complex interac tions take place among the psychological, social, physio logical, biochemical, endocrinological and neurochemical factors involved in aggression and defeat. The general indications are that while the aggressor learns to survive and adapts readily to the fighting process, the vanquished, if he does not die, maintains an existence highlighted by severe and extensive changes in all physiologic and psycho logic systems. We cannot make sweeping generalizations to the human organism from the results of non-human animal experimentation. Nevertheless, it is well-known that in all animals, including the human, similar basic biochemi cal systems are involved.

Book excerpt: This is the original work on which Hans Eysenck's fifty years of research have been built. It introduced many new ideas about the nature and measurement of personality into the field, related personality to abnormal psychology, and demonstrated the possibility of testing personality theory experimentally. The book is the result of a concentrated and cooperative effort to discover the main dimensions of personality, and to define them operationally, that is, by means of strictly experimental, quantitative procedures. More than three dozen separate researches were carried out on some 10,000 normal and neurotic subjects by a research team of psychologists and psychiatrists. A special feature of this work is the close collaboration between psychologists and psychiatrists. Eysenck believes that the exploration of personality would have reached an advanced state much earlier had such a collaboration been the rule rather than the exception in studies of this kind. Both disciplines benefit by working together on the many problems they have in common. In his new introduction, Eysenck discusses the difficulty he had in conveying this belief to scientists from opposite ends of the psychology spectrum when he first began work on this book. He goes on to explain the basis from which Dimensions of Personality developed. Central to any concept of personality, he states, must be hierarchies of traits organized into a dimensional system. The two major dimensions he posited, neuroticism and extraversion, were in disfavor with most scientists of personality at the time. Now they form part of practically all descriptions of personality. Dimensions of Personality is a landmark study and should be read by both students and professionals in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and sociology.

Book excerpt: In A History of Modern Psychology in Context, the authors resist the traditional storylines of great achievements by eminent people, or schools of thought that rise and fall in the wake of scientific progress. Instead, psychology is portrayed as a network of scientific and professional practices embedded in specific contexts. The narrative is informed by three key concepts—indigenization, reflexivity, and social constructionism—and by the fascinating interplay between disciplinary Psychology and everyday psychology.

Book excerpt: First published in 1973, The Psychology of Conservatism explores attitudes, their measurement, their structure and dynamics, and the personality traits apparently underlying attitude patterns. It examines the link between differing attitudes and discusses characteristic patterns and syndromes. The book focuses on the origins and dynamics of a major factor called "liberalism – conservatism" which is found to account for much of the variance in attitudes amongst different people. Contributors review previous studies relating to personality and attitude before engaging in new studies and proposing their own theories to explain the conservative attitude. The book introduces provocative theoretical ideas and provides a valuable examination of an important psychological and social attitude syndrome. This book will be of interest to researchers in personality and social psychology, sociology and political science and education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most difficult milestone in a young clinician's career is the completion of the first interview. For the typical trainee, the endeavor is fraught with apprehen sion and with some degree of dread. If the interview goes weIl, there is consider able rejoicing; if it goes badly, much consternation results. Irrespective of the amount of preparation that has taken place before the interview, the neophyte will justifiably remain nervous about this endeavor. Thus, the first edition of Diagnostic Interviewing was devoted to providing a clear outline for the student in tackling a large variety of patients in the interview setting. In consideration of the positive response to the first edition of Diagnostic Interviewing, published in 1985, we and our editor at Plenum Press, Eliot Werner, decided that it was time to update the material. However, the basic premise that a book of this nature needs to encompass theoretical rationale, clinical description, and the pragmatics of "how to" once again has been followed. And, as in the case of the first edition, this second edition does not represent the cat's being skinned in yet another way. Quite to the contrary, we still believe that our students truly need to read the material covered herein with considerable care, and once again the book is dedicated to them. We are particularly concerned that in the clinieal education of our graduate students, interviewing has been given short shrift.
