Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea turtles have existed for millions of years, making them fascinating subjects of study. In the last 20 years, the science of sea turtle biology has expanded at an exponential rate, leading to major advances in many areas. This book synthesizes the results of these advances and focuses on how these endangered marine reptiles operate in, adapt to, and are dependent upon particular features of their marine environment. New technology in data gathering, such as DNA analyses, remote sensing, and physiological monitoring techniques, has led to a much greater understanding of the biology of the sea turtle at all stages of their life history.

An international team of leading authorities review the impact of ontogeny, mechanics, and environment in relation to bone and dental tissues. Synthesizing current advances in the biological problems of growth, metabolism, evolution, ecology, and behavior, this comprehensive and authoritative volume is built upon a foundation of concepts and technology generated over the past fifty years.
Book Synopsis Assessment of Sea-Turtle Status and Trends by : National Research Council
Download or read book Assessment of Sea-Turtle Status and Trends written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All six species of sea turtles found in U.S. waters are listed as endangered or threatened, but the exact population sizes of these species are unknown due to a lack of key information regarding birth and survival rates. The U.S. Endangered Species Act prohibits the hunting of sea turtles and reduces incidental losses from activities such as shrimp trawling and development on beaches used for nesting. However, current monitoring does not provide enough information on sea turtle populations to evaluate the effectiveness of these protective measures. Sea Turtle Status and Trends reviews current methods for assessing sea turtle populations and finds that although counts of sea turtles are essential, more detailed information on sea turtle biology, such as survival rates and breeding patterns, is needed to predict and understand changes in populations in order to develop successful management and conservation plans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of the first volume of The Biology of Sea Turtles revealed a need for broad but comprehensive reviews of major recent advances in sea turtle biology. Biology of Sea Turtles, Volume II emphasizes practical aspects of biology that relate to sea turtle management and to changes in marine and coastal ecosystems. These topics i
Book Synopsis Bone Histology of Fossil Tetrapods by : Kevin Padian
Download or read book Bone Histology of Fossil Tetrapods written by Kevin Padian and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microscopic examination of fossilized bone tissue is a sophisticated and increasingly important analytical tool for understanding the life history of ancient organisms. This book provides an essential primer and manual for using fossil bone histology to investigate the biology of extinct tetrapods. Twelve experts summarize advances in the field over the past three decades, reviewing fundamental basics of bone microanatomy and physiology. Research specimen selection, thin-section preparation, and data analysis are addressed in detail. The authors also outline methods and issues in bone growth rate calculation and chronological age determination, as well as how to examine broader questions of behavior, ecology, and evolution by studying the microstructure of bone.

Book Synopsis The Biology of Sea Turtles by : Jeanette Wyneken
Download or read book The Biology of Sea Turtles written by Jeanette Wyneken and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first volume of The Biology of Sea Turtles was published in 1997, the field has grown and matured in ways few of the authors would have predicted—particularly in the areas of physiology, behavior, genetics, and health. Volume III presents timely coverage of emerging areas as well as the integration of approaches and information that did not exist even a decade ago. The book assembles the foremost experts in each topic to provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive book on sea turtles available today. New areas covered include in vivo imaging of structure, spatial distributions of marine turtles at sea, epibiosis, imprinting, parasitology, and climatic effects. Life history is explored in three chapters covering age determination, predator-prey interactions, and mortality from bycatch. The Biology of Sea Turtles, Volume III will inspire scientists and students to explore and expand their understanding of these intriguing animals. The book provides clear baseline summaries, thoughtful syntheses, and effective presentation of the most fundamental topics spanning form and function, health, distributions, behavior, genetics, evolution, and ecology. Its scope and depth make it the definitive go-to reference in the field.

Download or read book Bone written by Brian K. Hall and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-11-09 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bone: A Treatise is a series of seven volumes devoted to providing the most up-to-date, comprehensive, and authoritative coverage of all aspects of bone. Seventy-four chapters have been written by 127 respected authors, all of whom are actively engaged in basic, applied, and clinical bone research. The seven volumes in this unique series are organized thematically; each volume integrates structure, function, biochemistry, metabolism, and the molecular and clinical aspects of a particular aspect of the biology of bone. Bone-forming cells are treated in Volume I. Bone resorbing cells are covered in Volume II. Volumes III and IV examine the extracellular matrix of bone, with Volume III concentrating on the structure of bone matrix and on bone-specific proteins, while Volume IV focuses on the mineralization (calcification) of that matrix. Volume V addresses the repair and regeneration of bone. Volumes VI and VII explore bone growth and development.

Book Synopsis The U.S. Commercial Sea Turtle Landings by : W. N. Witzell
Download or read book The U.S. Commercial Sea Turtle Landings written by W. N. Witzell and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The commercial landings of threatened and endangered species of marine turtles throughout U.S. waters have never been reported in detail. The early commercial sea turtle landings were sporadically collected and were published in a series of U.S. Government fisheries documents. Unfortunately, they have never been collated and summarized into a single data base or document. These are important base-line fisheries data on U.S. threatened and endangered species of sea turtles and provide considerable insight into the sociology and economics of the turtle fishery. Additionally, these data also provide basic biological information, such as species composition, seasonality, and sizes. These factors are necessary for understanding the ecology of these unique reptiles and enable resource managers to formulate sound management and conservation strategies, as mandated by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, and subsequent amendments. In this report, I summarize the commercial U.S. sea turtle landings as reported by the U.S. Fisheries Commission, Bureau of Commercial Fisheries and National Marine Fisheries Service for the continental U.S., Puerto Rico, and Hawaii"--Introduction
