Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a rich and vibrant traditional culture cope with the onslaughts of the modern era? The Enuani people, inhabiting the four Aniocha/Oshimili local government areas in Nigeria, have a proud legacy of culture and tradition. Yet, they struggle with issues of identity and political place, while some aspects of their culture are threatened by modernity. Through tales and essays, ENUANI explores the impact of modernity on the rich culture of the Enuani people, while attempting to archive, document, and preserve the culture. This multi-layered book delves into issues of Enuani traits, religion, language, marriage/divorce, womanhood, jurisprudence, food systems, and personal attitudes. The book then digs even deeper into the culture by listing and analyzing over ten dozen Enuani proverbs. Each proverb is first rendered in Enuani dialect. It is then translated and dissected for its literal and figurative meanings, with examples and commentary on appropriate situations for the use of the proverb. No prior familiarity with Enuani language/culture is assumed. This analysis clearly demonstrates the role of proverbs as a window on Enuani culture, and serves as an example that is applicable to other cultures. ENUANI provides the necessary cultural insight for Enuani and non-Enuani people alike. It is essential reading for people all over the world with Enuani affiliations or with an academic interest in peoples, anthropology and ethnography. How does all this apply to your own culture and ethnicity? Read ENUANI to find out. Get informed. Get inspired.

Book excerpt: This study evaluates whether surprise and intelligence failure leading to mass casualty terrorism are inevitable. It explores the extent to which four factors – failures of public policy leadership, analytical challenges, organizational obstacles, and the inherent problems of warning information – contribute to intelligence failure. The study applies existing theories of surprise and intelligence failure to case studies of five mass casualty terrorism incidents: World Trade Center 1993; Oklahoma City 1995; Khobar Towers 1996; East African Embassies 1998; and September 11, 2001. A structured, focused comparison of the cases is made using a set of thirteen probing questions based on the factors above. The study concludes that while all four factors were influential, failures of public policy leadership contributed directly to surprise. Psychological bias and poor threat assessments prohibited policy makers from anticipating or preventing attacks. Policy makers mistakenly continued to use a law enforcement approach to handling terrorism, and failed to provide adequate funding, guidance, and oversight of the intelligence community. The study has implications for intelligence reform, information sharing, congressional oversight, and society’s expectations about the degree to which the intelligence community can predict or prevent surprise attacks.

Book excerpt: “A simmering slow burn bursting with banter… This is a romance for anyone who’s ever felt too messy to be loved.” —ROSIE DANAN, author of The Roommate In this fierce and funny battle of the exes, Ashley Winstead's Fool Me Once explores the chaos of wanting something you used to have. Lee Stone is a twenty-first-century woman: she kicks butt at her job as a communications director at a women-run electric car company (that’s better than Tesla, thank you), and after work she is “Stoner,” drinking guys under the table and never letting any of them get too comfortable in her bed… That’s because Lee’s learned one big lesson: never trust love. Four major heartbreaks set her straight, from her father cheating on her mom all the way to Ben Laderman in grad school—who wasn’t actually cheating, but she could have sworn he was, so she reciprocated in kind. Then Ben shows up five years later, working as a policy expert for the most liberal governor in Texas history, just as Lee is trying to get a clean energy bill rolling. Things get complicated—and competitive—as Lee and Ben are forced to work together. Tension builds just as old sparks reignite, fanning the flames for a romantic dustup the size of Texas. Don't miss The Boyfriend Candidate, Ashley Winstead's next laugh-out-loud rom-com about learning to embrace living outside your comfort zone!

Book excerpt: Is there a universal human natural moral system-a moral system inherent in human nature, resulting from fundamental natural principles and evolutionary processes, discernible and explainable via the fast-improving scientific understanding of human behavior and evolution, and which satisfies the basic requirements associated with systems of morality? Is it valid-scientifically and rationally-to acknowledge the existence of the natural moral system and use it to improve human moral understanding? To inform public policy? To help address the shared problems of humanity? To help us live together better? To facilitate happiness? What is the nature of the natural moral system? What are its foundational characteristics? What is the relationship between morality and survival? Morality and happiness? And what about meaning? What are the obligations of political and corporate leaders, scientists, educators, and others to use the human gift of reason to help improve the human condition? Integrating recent advances in scientific understanding, and viewing them from the standpoint of questions traditionally asked by philosophers, Jeff Huggins addresses these questions of immense relevance to the sustainability and quality of human life, biodiversity, and the environment as well as to our everyday lives as modern humans.

Book excerpt: In a world of increasing dependence on information technology, the prevention of cyberattacks on a nation's important computer and communications systems and networks is a problem that looms large. Given the demonstrated limitations of passive cybersecurity defense measures, it is natural to consider the possibility that deterrence might play a useful role in preventing cyberattacks against the United States and its vital interests. At the request of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the National Research Council undertook a two-phase project aimed to foster a broad, multidisciplinary examination of strategies for deterring cyberattacks on the United States and of the possible utility of these strategies for the U.S. government. The first phase produced a letter report providing basic information needed to understand the nature of the problem and to articulate important questions that can drive research regarding ways of more effectively preventing, discouraging, and inhibiting hostile activity against important U.S. information systems and networks. The second phase of the project entailed selecting appropriate experts to write papers on questions raised in the letter report. A number of experts, identified by the committee, were commissioned to write these papers under contract with the National Academy of Sciences. Commissioned papers were discussed at a public workshop held June 10-11, 2010, in Washington, D.C., and authors revised their papers after the workshop. Although the authors were selected and the papers reviewed and discussed by the committee, the individually authored papers do not reflect consensus views of the committee, and the reader should view these papers as offering points of departure that can stimulate further work on the topics discussed. The papers presented in this volume are published essentially as received from the authors, with some proofreading corrections made as limited time allowed.

Book excerpt: Through use of practical examples and a plainspoken narrative style that minimises the use of maths, this book demystifies data concepts, sources, and methods for public service professionals interested in understanding economic and social issues at the regional level. By blending elements of a general interest book, a textbook, and a reference book, it equips civic leaders, public administrators, urban planners, nonprofit executives, philanthropists, journalists, and graduate students in various public affairs disciplines to wield social and economic data for the benefit of their communities. While numerous books about quantitative research exist, few focus specifically on the public sector. Running the Numbers, in contrast, explores a wide array of topics of regional importance, including economic output, demographics, business structure, labour markets, and income, among many others. To that end, the book stresses practical applications, minimises the use of maths, and employs extended, chapter-length examples that demonstrate how analytical tools can illuminate the social and economic workings of actual American regions.

Book excerpt: As the U.S. enters the last lap of the 2008 presidential election season, the media and the candidates are in full gear exploiting each other, often at the expense of public information and awareness. This book looks at how presidents and presidential candidates use television, the Internet, and newspapers to promote their policies and themselves, even as they are sometimes manipulated by the media they so avidly seek. Looking at White House media strategies relating to the Iraq War and occupation, health care reform, tax and budget debates, the debate over Bush's competence, the Clinton-Lewinsky sex scandal, and the early battles of the 2008 presidential election, media scholar and former journalist Stephen Farnsworth examines how presidents shift the direction and limit the amount of public debate over policies to favor themselves-and how reporters and Internet commentators often help them do so. The result short-circuits the public's role in evaluating competing visions for the country's future and the legislative branch's role in policy making. The modern presidential obsession with public relations-and media willingness to be used to advance executive power-undermine the country's long term ability to deal with crucial problems, including foreign and military relations, a growing government debt, and public health care shortcomings.
