Book excerpt: The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud tells the haunting story of a young man who narrowly survives a terrible car wreck that kills his little brother. Years later, the brothers’ bond remains so strong that it transcends the normal boundaries separating life and death. Charlie St. Cloud lives in a snug New England fishing village. By day he tends the lawns and monuments of the ancient cemetery where his younger brother, Sam, is buried. Graced with an extraordinary gift after surviving the accident, he can still see, talk, and even play catch with Sam’s spirit. But townsfolk whisper that Charlie has never recovered from his loss. Into his carefully ordered life comes Tess Carroll, a captivating, adventuresome woman training for a solo sailing trip around the globe. Fate steers her boat into a treacherous storm that blows her back to harbor, to a charged encounter with Charlie, and to a surprise more overwhelming than the violent sea itself. Charlie and Tess discover a beautiful and uncommon connection that leads to a race against time and a desperate choice between death and life, between the past and the future, between holding on and letting go. Luminous, soulful, and filled with unforgettable characters, The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud is one of those rare, wise books that reveal the mysteries of the unseen world around us, gently transforming the worst pain of loss into hope, healing, and even laughter. Suspenseful and deeply moving, its startling climax reminds us that sometimes tragedies can bring about miracles if we simply open our hearts.
Book Synopsis Internet Afterlife by : Kevin O'Neill
Download or read book Internet Afterlife written by Kevin O'Neill and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can you imagine swapping your body for a virtual version? This technology-based look at the afterlife chronicles America's fascination with death and reveals how digital immortality may become a reality. The Internet has reinvented the paradigm of life and death: social media enables a discourse with loved ones long after their deaths, while gaming sites provide opportunities for multiple lives and life forms. In this thought-provoking work, author Kevin O'Neill examines America's concept of afterlife—as imagined in cyberspace—and considers how technologies designed to emulate immortality present serious challenges to our ideas about human identity and to our religious beliefs about heaven and hell. The first part of the work—covering the period between 1840 and 1860—addresses post-mortem photography, cemetery design, and spiritualism. The second section discusses Internet afterlife, including online memorials and cemeteries; social media legacy pages; and sites that curate passwords, bequests, and final requests. The work concludes with chapters on the transhumanist movement, the philosophical and religious debates about Internet immortality, and the study of technologies attempting to extend life long after the human form ceases.

Book Synopsis A Traveler's Guide to the Afterlife by : Mark Mirabello
Download or read book A Traveler's Guide to the Afterlife written by Mark Mirabello and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A grand survey of the world’s death and afterlife traditions throughout history • Examines beliefs from many different cultures on the soul, heaven, hell, and reincarnation; instructions for accessing the different worlds of the afterlife; how one may become a god; and how ethics and the afterlife may not be connected • Explores techniques to communicate with the dead, including séance instructions • Includes an extensive bibliography of more than 900 sources from around the world Drawing on death and afterlife traditions from cultures around the world, Mark Mirabello explores the many forms of existence beyond death and each tradition’s instructions to access the afterlife. He examines beliefs on the soul, heaven, hell, and reincarnation and wisdom from Books of the Dead such as the Book of Going Forth by Day from Egypt, the Katha Upanishad from India, the Bardo Thodol from Tibet, the Golden Orphic Tablets from Greece, Lieh Tzu from China, and Heaven and its Wonders and Hell from Things Heard and Seen from 18th-century Europe. Considering the question “What is Death?” Mirabello provides answers from a wide range of ancient and modern thinkers, including scientist Nicholas Maxwell, the seer Emanuel Swedenborg, 1st-century Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna, and Greek philosopher Euripides, who opined that we may already be dead and only dreaming we are alive. He explores the trek of the soul through life and death with firsthand accounts of the death journey and notes that what is perceived as death here may actually be life somewhere else. He reveals how, in many traditions, ethics and the afterlife are not connected and how an afterlife is possible even without a god or a soul. Sharing evidence that consciousness is not simply a product of the brain, he offers a strong rebuttal to nihilists, materialists, and the Lokayata philosophical school of India who believe in the “finality” of death. He explains how specters and ghosts are produced and offers techniques to communicate with the dead as well as instructions for an out-of-body experience and the complete procedure for a séance. With an extensive bibliography of more than 900 sources, this guide offers comprehensive information on afterlife beliefs from the vast majority of cultures around the world and throughout history--a veritable “traveler’s guide” to the afterlife.

Download or read book Film and the Afterlife written by David Rankin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how post-death existence is represented in popular film, looking at issues such as continuity, personal identity, and the nature of existence beyond the grave. Film often returns to the theme of dying, death and the afterlife, both directly and indirectly, because there are very few subjects as compelling and universal. The book compares the representation of death, dying and the afterlife in films to scholarly surveys of attitudes towards life-after-death through the analysis of twenty films made between the end of World War II and now. It looks at the portrayals of stages between death and a final destination; spatio-temporal and personal continuity; the nature of afterlife existence in terms of embodiment, or not; and the contact between the worlds of the living and the dead. This book offers a wide-ranging view on a compelling subject in film. As such, it will be of great interest to scholars of Religion and Film, Religion and Media, the Philosophy of Religion, and the Sociology of Religion, as well as Religion, Media and Film Studies more generally .

Book Synopsis The Soundtrack of My Life by : Susan Mary Paige
Download or read book The Soundtrack of My Life written by Susan Mary Paige and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-18 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I refer to my book as a memoir, somewhat autobiographical but also a journal, recounting my quest to discover more about those who came before me in my father's family. Things grew complicated, and I had no intention of writing about any of this until a colleague spoke the fateful words to me: "You need to write this down." If I had not begun writing when I did, much of this story would be lost to time and other life factors. On the surface, this is a mystery story about a cigar box of memorabilia I took possession of in 1977 after my dad died. The cigar box was no more than a curiosity, so I would look at the contents and put it away. Then came personal computers so I could search from the comfort of my home. Like so many mysteries, I thought the answers were rather straightforward. The deeper I searched, the more I was frustrated, humbled, and compelled to keep searching and writing for ten-plus years. As a Roman Catholic, I soon saw this search had a deeper theological meaning for me as I pondered the relationship this journey had to the (a) communion of saints, the (b) corporal works of mercy, and, ultimately, (c) forgiveness of self and others. I wrote this as a conversation with the reader asking them to ponder these same issues with me. I also adopted the Catholic practice of picking a patron saint for this memoire, and who is better than Saint Jerome? I needed both a muse and a taskmaster, and he fills both roles quite ably. He is also the patron saint of archivers, and that would certainly be me. The music theme is a significant backdrop to my story. Just like the movie background music or score kept subtle to set the tone and elicit emotion, my lyrics and melody selections are used to express and convey the same. As you will learn, Emma herself was an accomplished musician. In addition, science suggests that this universe itself is believed to be finely tuned harmonic from galaxies to DNA. As I write about implied realms beyond this one, a music soundtrack seems appropriate.
