Book excerpt: Raised in a heavily Catholic suburb of Detroit, Michigan, Shannon grew up focusing on two things: how to do enough good deeds to get into heaven and how to stay pure enough to escape hell. In college, she followed many of her peers into an Evangelical church known for guitars, drum, religious-based shame, and the idea that without Jesus she was nothing. But when she encountered Judaism on that same campus, a spark ignited within her and refused to be put out. Judaism felt obvious, familiar. After a falling out with her biological mother and two miscarriages, she found the courage to send the most important email of her life: she asked the local Jews by Choice program to accept her as a student. Honest and unflinching, Shannon's story of coming home to Judaism encourages everyone-- Christian, atheist, Jewish, and anything in between-- to search relentlessly for the place where they belong.

Book excerpt: The story of the Exodus of Moses and the people of Israel has been told many times and in many ways, especially in movies like The Ten Commandments. The Israelites are being led to the Promised Land, but because of their faithlessness, most are banished to forty years in the Sinai Desert. After Sinai takes a completely different look at an old story. Michael Shelton reviews the major threads in the accounts in the books of Exodus, Numbers, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy and concludes the problem wasn’t the faithlessness of the Jews; it was the overbearing demands of the one who let his people go and then refused to let his people go back. After Sinai is a remarkable essay of a people who sought freedom but instead left one human pharaoh only to find him replaced by a divine pharaoh. The story sounds more in keeping with Mount Olympus. But it’s Mount Sinai and the drama that took place before, during, and after the Ten Commandments. In fact, the Big Ten is not the climax of the story. It’s the events—the interaction among God, Moses, and the people of Israel leading to the banishment to the wilderness—that make for the real climax.

Book excerpt: In both the 1956 and 1967 wars, Abu Ageila was the main gateway to the Sinai for the Israel Defense Forces. Yet there were marked differences between Egyptian and Israeli war plans, preparations, operations, and results in the two battles for the area. In 1956, Israel carried the burden of a constricting alliance with Britain and France and faced other extensive military problems. The result was that Israel fought a difficult and costly battle for Abu Ageila. In contrast, in 1967, the Israel Defense Forces developed a brilliant operational plan and achieved effective unit command and control and attained a decisive victory.

James Todd makes a bold claim by contending that as followers of Jesus Christ who stand under a new covenant, Christians are no longer subject to any of the Old Testament laws. With wit and insight, Todd helps us understand how the laws given at Mount Sinai should be read by those called to live as saints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Name Command (NC) is usually interpreted as a prohibition against speaking Yhwh’s name in a particular context: false oaths, wrongful pronunciation, irreverent worship, magical practices, cursing, false teaching, and the like. However, the NC lacks the contextual specification needed to support the command as speech related. Taking seriously the narrative context at Sinai and the closest lexical parallels, a different picture emerges—one animated by concrete rituals and their associated metaphorical concepts. The unique phrase ns' shm is one of several expressions arising from the conceptual metaphor, election as branding, that finds analogies in high-priest regalia as well as in various ways of claiming ownership in the Ancient Near East, such as inscribed monuments, the use of seals, and the branding of slaves. The NC presupposes that Yhwh has claimed Israel by placing Yhwh’s own name on her. In this light, the first two commands of the Decalogue reinforce the two sides of the covenant declaration: “I will be your God; you will be my people.” The first expresses the demand for exclusive worship and the second calls for proper representation. As a consequence, the NC invites a richer exploration of what it means to be a people in covenant with Yhwh—a people bearing his name among the nations. It also points to what is at stake when Israel carries that name “in vain.” The image of bearing Yhwh’s name offers a rich source for theological and ethical reflection that cannot be conveyed nonmetaphorically without distortion or loss of meaning.

Book excerpt: IN THE SHADOW OF SINAI: A STORY OF TRAVEL AND RESEARCH FROM 1895-1897 and HOW THE CODEX WAS FOUND: A NARRATIVE OF TWO VISITS TO SINAI: FROM MRS LEWIS'S JOURNALS, 1892-1893—published here in a new one-volume edition—were originally published in the late 1890's, to great acclaim. They are not only interesting and witty travelogues, but they are also a superb record of the discovery of the Syriac palimpsest, and a narrative of the journeys and adventures surrounding that research. The text describes a very remarkable variant of the reported spoken word of Jesus Christ (Matthew xii: 36), which will be of interest to all Christians and scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the historical development of the blessing of waters and its theology in the East, with an emphasis on the Byzantine tradition. Exploring how Eastern Christians have sought these waters as a source of healing, purification, and communion with God, Denysenko unpacks their euchology and ritual context. The history and theology of the blessing of waters on Epiphany is informative for contemporary theologians, historians, pastors and students. Offering important insights into how Christians renew Baptism in receiving the blessed waters, this book also proposes new perspectives for theologizing Christian stewardship of ecology in the modern era based on a patristic liturgical synthesis. Denysenko presents an alternative framework for understanding the activity of the Trinity, enabling readers to encounter a vision of how participants encounter God in and after ritual.
