Book excerpt: In After Dark on Bourbon Street, Book Eight of #1 best-selling Amazon Romance writer Trinity Blacio’s futuristic Running in Fear series, we meet Valda Sart, a unique creature in this new world. Valda hated being a Skunk Ape --a Bigfoot, a Yeti by another name. But she was no ordinary Skunk Ape. Valda had gifts and kept them hidden. But now someone was hunting her, and she knew it was only a matter of time before they caught her. The six men of her pack, the ones she'd been promised to, the ones who would not give up on her, were determined to claim her. Her only option to keep her only freedom was to use her gift and blend in with the world around her. Hiding among the humans, she realized how much her life had sucked before she’d forged this new one in New Orleans. Here in the city, she had friends, and men who actually talked to her and courted her. But for the last six years something had been pulling at her. It was only a matter of time before she, too, would have to join Jaycee, Suzanne and Lissa on the new planet. Even in her dreams she'd seen the new, beautiful world, and the wonderful and terrible beings already living there. How can they ask her to give up romance, love and friends? Didn't they know what it would mean if this group of men found her? Valda hated being a Skunk Ape --a Bigfoot, a Yeti by another name. But she was no ordinary Skunk Ape. Book excerpt: New Orleans is a city of many storied streets, but only one conjures up as much unbridled passion as it does fervent hatred, simultaneously polarizing the public while drawing millions of visitors a year. A fascinating investigation into the mile-long urban space that is Bourbon Street, Richard Campanella’s comprehensive cultural history spans from the street’s inception during the colonial period through three tumultuous centuries, arriving at the world-famous entertainment strip of today. Clearly written and carefully researched, Campanella’s book interweaves world events—from the Louisiana Purchase to World War II to Hurricane Katrina—with local and national characters, ranging from presidents to showgirls, to explain how Bourbon Street became an intriguing and singular artifact, uniquely informative of both New Orleans’s history and American society. While offering a captivating historical-geographical panorama of Bourbon Street, Campanella also presents a contemporary microview of the area, describing the population, architecture, and local economy, and shows how Bourbon Street operates on a typical night. The fate of these few blocks in the French Quarter is played out on a larger stage, however, as the internationally recognized brands that Bourbon Street merchants and the city of New Orleans strive to promote both clash with and complement each other. An epic narrative detailing the influence of politics, money, race, sex, organized crime, and tourism, Bourbon Street: A History ultimately demonstrates that one of the most well-known addresses in North America is more than the epicenter of Mardi Gras; it serves as a battleground for a fundamental dispute over cultural authenticity and commodification.

Book excerpt: How does a couple survive when the one thing that brought them together threatens to tear them apart? In Beyond Bourbon Street, Nikesha Elise Williams weaves a story of home and family in New Orleans' still recovering lower ninth ward. Bombei and Graigh Halvert met in 2006 in the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Now fifteen years after the storm, the reluctant couple is married and on the verge of having their first child together. However, their childhood traumas wedge their way between them; festering and threatening to rot their relationship, and the family they're trying to build, from the inside out. This tale dissects the mystery and intrigue of first connections against the yoke of familial obligation and the ties that bind. Bombei and Graigh are forced to make choice between home and family and their own self-preservation? Set against the backdrop of one of America's greatest cities, Nikesha Elise Williams, takes us on a journey away from the glitz and glamour the Big Easy is known for, and into the bowels of the city where daily life is a lesson in resurrection, resilience, and redefining what it means to be home.

Meet Ella Brennan: mother, mentor, blunt-talking fireball, and matriarch of a New Orleans restaurant empire. Ella is famous for bringing national attention to Creole cuisine, and her unique vision is best summed up in her own words: "I don’t want a restaurant where a jazz band can’t come marching through." In this candid autobiography, Ella shares her life story from childhood in the Great Depression to opening acclaimed eateries. When the Brennans launched Commander’s Palace, it became the city’s most popular restaurant. Many of the city’s most famous chefs such as Paul Prudhomme, Emeril Lagasse, Troy McPhail, and many others, got their start there. Miss Ella of Commander’s Palace describes the drama, the disasters, and the abundance of love, sweat, and grit it takes to become the matriarch of New Orleans’ finest restaurant empire.

This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B-drinking is a strategy whereby dancers, waitresses, and otherwise legally employed women illegally solicit drinks from tourists for pay. Unique to the ethnographic literature on strip clubs, Bourbon Street, B-Drinking, and the Sexual Economy of Tourism focuses on the role of alcohol sales in the sexual economy of Bourbon Street, New Orleans. Relying on historical material, Demovic reveals that the intimate encounters B-girls have provided have been a part of the tourism service economy since the beginning of the twentieth century. The evolution of “B-girldom” as an imagined identity created through changing representations of the practice over the decades have both reflected and constructed the experiences of women working in New Orleans’ nightclubs. The B-drinker is an iconic character found in fictional and nonfictional accounts of the city. B-girls inhabit an ambiguous structural position in the performance of heritage tourism in New Orleans. Participant observation and interviews reveal that by the 1990s women who worked as B-drinkers were significant stakeholders in French Quarter tourism, able to use their informal networks to seize power over working conditions in the tourism economy of Bourbon Street. Demovic focuses on how these marginalized but critical workers have responded to stigma by creating tight knit groups which continue to support one another decades after leaving their work on Bourbon Street. This book adds the New Orleans example to a broader understanding of how sex work evolves in ways that reflect regional history and culture. Widening the ethnographic lens, Demovic looks past strip tease itself and to the economic activities of such workers when they are off the stage.

Book excerpt: From famous writers and personalities who call the city home, whether by birth or simply love, these pieces written in the wake of Hurricane Katrina serve as a timeless tribute to New Orleans. Sentimental, joyful, and witty, these essays by celebrated writers, entertainers, chefs, and fans honor the life of one of America's most beloved cities. Paul Prudhomme writes about the emotional highs New Orleans inspires, Wynton Marsalis exalts his native city as soul model for the nation, while Walter Isaacson shares his vision for preserving his hometown's pentimento magic. Stewart O'Nan recalls the fantasy haze that enshrouded his first trip to the Big Easy when he was thirty and bowed to Richard Ford to receive his first literary prize. Poppy Z. Brite thanks New Orleans for helping her discover the simple pleasure of Audubon Park's egrets, and Elizabeth Dewberry explores what it means to work Bourbon Street as a stripper. My New Orleans captures the spirit of the city that was—and that will be again.
