Book excerpt: This book critically analyses the specific threat of terrorism in Southeast Asia since the Bali blasts of 12 October 2002 and the US-led war on Iraq. It offers a comprehensive and critical examination of the ideological, socioeconomic and political motivations, trans-regional linkages, and media representations of the terrorist threat in the region, assesses the efficacy of the regional counter-terror response and suggests a more balanced and nuanced approach to combating the terror threat in Southeast Asia. The contributors include leading scholars of political Islam in the region, renowned terrorism and regional security analysts, as well as highly regarded regional journalists and commentators. This represents a formidable and unequalled combination of expertise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is translated from its Indonesian version titled “DARI BOM BALI HINGGA TRAGEDI SUKHOI – Keberhasilan DVI Indonesia dalam Mengungkap Berbagai Kasus” (FROM BALI BOMBING TO SUKHOI TRAGEDY, the success story of Indonesian DVI in uncovering various cases). The publication of this book had gone through a long process, starting from my passion as a writer who has a study background in disaster victims’ identification and involvements in the activities of DVI (Disaster Victim Identification), and then encouragements from many people to write about the DVI’s works and success in uncovering many cases. The aim, of course, is to make it as a subject of learning for the general public about the meaning and benefit of the works of identifying victims of natural disasters and man-caused disasters. The Indonesian version of this book had been published in mid-2013. It was profoundly welcomed by the general public, the Police, mass media, and academicians, especially those who involve in medicine and forensics. In less than two months, the book had to be printed in second edition. Therefore, as a writer I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude and respect to all sides who had supported the publication of the Indonesian version book. I would like also to extend my gratitude to all officials at that time, including General Police Drs. Timur Pradopo as Chief of Indonesian National Police, Irjen Polisi Drs. Didiek S. Triwidodo M.M, M. Hum as Central Java Police Commander, Brigjen. Pol. Dr. Arthur Tampi as Kapusdokkes Polri and the committee chairman of DVI Nasional Indonesia, Kombes Pol Dr. Musyafak as chairman of Biddokkes at Central Java Regional Police (Biddokkes Polda Jateng), and to Brigjen Pol. dr. Edy Saparwoko, M.M., DFM, Sp.JP., Irjen Pol dr. Musaddeq Ishaq, DFM, as well as many other officers in the Indonesian Police that I could not name them one by one. I would like also to extend my gratitude to Mr. Andy F. Noya as a prominent figure of the Indonesian reading society who provided his own testimony in the book, and my colleagues Kombes Pol dr. Anton Castilani, DFM, and drg. Sindhy R. Malingkas. I would like also to thank my family, my husband, children, parents, publisher, and all people who have contributed to this publication that I could not mention one by one. This English version was published to meet the demands of many sides concerned, including from the foreign police institutions that consider it as a source of learning from In donesia about the identification of victims in natural disasters and man-caused disasters. The more so, a number of cases mentioned in this book involved foreigners. On one side, the issues of foreigners have encouraged all professionals to study it, but on the other side, all families’ members of the foreign victims with various aspects of their background study will also be encouraged to read and study it. In writing this book, I will not only fulfill a moral responsibility resulted from my involvement in DVI Indonesia. But more than that, this book will also show the professionalism of the Police and the team of DVI Indonesia, and that way their works and performances can be well known at the international stage. This English version publication was also a result of encouragement from the current Chief of Indonesian National Police, General Police Drs. Sutarman. According to him, the advancement of information and communication technology has made the world without borders. All events in other countries, especially related to natural disasters and man-caused disasters, cannot be concealed from the attention of people in other countries. The Police as the vanguard in handling and uncovering the victims is required to be professional and open to the international community. That is the reason why the Chief of Indonesian National Police has strongly encouraged the publication of this English version, and was willing to write a preface. As a writer of this book, I would like to extend my gratitude and respect to the Chief of Indonesian National Police. Finally, as the Indonesian proverb says “Tak Ada Gading yang Tak Retak” (There is no Ivory that is not Cracked or Nothing is Perfect), allow me to take this opportunity to apologize for any mistake or shortcoming in publication of this book. We welcome any criticism and ideas to make this publication better.

Book excerpt: Russ Long's Blowout Offshore from Bali is another compelling story of World Oil's exploration in the South China sea, following other exciting encounters with pirates and conspirators in his books, Mekong Drillship and Cambodian Corsairs. Harold Wellman is already much hated by a pirate leader from earlier encounters who attempts to disrupt exploration in the sea offshore from Bali. The pirate kidnaps a driller to hold for ransome, and organizes a flotilla of pirate dhows to attack the drillship at a critical time during their operations. At that moment they are having difficulty controlling a stringer containing high-pressure gas. Harold continues his quest to rescue their driller in spite of the dark haired Indonesian Stewardess he often meets on flights from Jakarta in the ugly bird Garuda Airline. Meanwhile he must keep his line of communication open with a red-haired beauty in Salsuleto, California, who has every intention of moving to the Far East. Woven into the story of deep emotions relating family members of explorers who travel to the exotic ends of the earth in search of new discoveries and indications of the dangers they face. They sometimes spend years away from family and lovers to fulfill their ambitions. These explorers face danger, death, and often unpredictable obstacles to attain the goals assigned by corporations. Their eventual successes enable people of the productive world to enjoy a life of plentiful energy. We owe them our gratitude for their efforts.

Book excerpt: This critical edition is at once a memorial to Bapak I Wayan Loceng following his passing in October, 2006, and a tribute to his great musical genius. This edition documents nine compositions from the esteemed Balinese gender wayang or shadow play repertoire. The music documented derives from the musical mastery of Bapak I Wayan Loceng (1926–2006), arguably the most renowned gender wayang expert in Bali, who lived in the village of Sukawati. This edition places the music within a historical, cultural, and biographical context and introduces a broad theoretical framework that contains a new definition for the discipline of ethnomusicology, and substantial discussion of the genres of musical biography, musical ethnography, and ethnomusicology of the individual. This edition will introduce the reader to pertinent scholarly perspectives, offer biographical information pertaining to Bapak I Wayan Loceng, delineate the cultural concepts and contexts for performance and background of the shadow play tradition in Bali, and clarify key aspects of the music itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates tourism as a form of globalization within the context of the island of Bali, which has been voted the world's top island destination for the third time running by American travellers. The volume covers the onset of the Asian Crisis, the largest stock-market crash since the Great Depression. The authors chart the turbulence that has afflicted the island at a time of market uncertainty and global political strife and analyze the responses of Bali's business and community leaders to the crises that have buffeted the island since the fall of Suharto. In particular, the book analyzes crisis management with regard to the Bali Bombings, the impact of the bombings on the tourism development cycle and investigates the motives of the bombers. The authors argue that the actions of the bombers can best be understood with regard to the rise of political Islam as a global issue and the book breaks new ground with an analysis of the bombers' global experiences. The book also examines home-grown resistance to certain aspects of globalization, notably the attempt to turn Besakih, the island's mother temple, into a World Heritage Site and top tourist destination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how diverse developments are reflected in the rise of the security groups in Bali, Indonesia. Bali’s security groups pose many interesting questions. Why did they put up so many huge posters around the streets of southern Bali promoting themselves? Are their claims to represent the community plausible or are they “gangs”? How are they shaped by Indonesia’s violent past? How does Hinduism affect their gender politics? Do they promote illiberal populism or ethnic and religious tolerance? Does their central role in money politics prevent local democratization? Rather than write bottom-up history or bring the state back in, this collection as a whole draws on the ideas that circulate among leaders. These circulating ideas construct contemporary politics around both reinterpretations of old practices and responses to problems around tourism, gender, populism, religion, and democracy.
