Book excerpt: African Journal of Economic and Business Research (AJEBR) is a blind refereed, high quality international journal that provides a forum for the publication of articles from academics, business practitioners, and policy makers. The journal aims to advance both theoretical and empirical research, inform policies and practices, and improve understanding of how economic and business decisions shape the lives of Africans. The journal accepts papers that may have a continental, regional or country focus. It is also envisaged that occasional special issues of AJEBR will be devoted to thematic topics or to sub-regions or countries. The journal is published three times a year, with one of these being a monograph. In addition, subscribers get a free book, which published every other year by the editors of the journal. Subscribers for the year 2006 will get a free copy of the book: Internationalisation and Enterprise Development in Ghana edited by the journal's editor, John Kuada, who is an Associate Professor, Department of Business Studies, Aalborg University, Denmark. Book excerpt: The overarching economic issue in Sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) today is to ensure a broad-based growth that lifts millions of Africans out of poverty. African countries are therefore consistently compared with high growth Asian countries such as Malaysia and South Korea which were at similar levels of economic growth as African countries for barely five decades ago. But while the Asian continent now enjoys the accolade of "economic miracle," the African situation is usually described by such adjectives as "disaster" and "tragedy" due to decades of non-growth experienced by nearly all SSA countries (Akyuz and Gore 2001). The search for growth sustaining economic policies for Africa is therefore as urgent today as it was half a century ago when the torchlight of de-colonilisation was set ablaze in Ghana. The contributions from these papers suggest that the social dimension of economics requires a greater attention, if we are to find a more sustaining growth strategy for Africa. Several scholars have attributed the remarkable growth in Asian countries to their underlying cultural values and effective use of social capital derived from their networks of social relations. According to these studies the Asian people tend to have a strong sense of collective social obligation - i.e. an obligation to fulfil their individual needs without jeopardising the chances of others to fulfil theirs or the entire community to survive and progress (Biggart and Hamilton 1992; Whitley 1992, 1994).

Book excerpt: The administrative sciences have been dominated by a turn to managerial perspectives in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and in the spirit of this turn, 'New Public Management' (or NPM) promises to produce efficient, responsible and client-oriented public services. The reforms carried out in the pursuit of New Public Management are often accompanied by great optimism and rapid, enthusiastic steps toward implementation. Even in highly developed industrial countries, however, these fundamental reforms often overlook the political and cultural contexts of the implementing country. New Public Management in Africa: Emerging Issues and Lessons provides much-needed theoretical foundations for NPM reforms in the African context and reflects on the success of existing reforms in the development of several African states. The individual contributions in this timely volume provide important analyses of academic discourse, practical policy, achievements, and desiderata. The book as a whole, however, provides a valuable impetus for public administration research in and on African states, sharing findings on the results of reforms to date and adjustments required for these reforms to succeed. For public administration researchers outside of Africa, this book offers a review of New Public Management case studies that are unavailable or difficult to find elsewhere, contributing much to the exchange between African and Western administration science research, and demonstrating that African administrative research is well-prepared to help resolve global challenges.

Book excerpt: The textbook experience of poverty can be witnessed in a number of developing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia and Latin America. Accordingly, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has been identified as an important tool for poverty reduction, as it is noted to accelerate economic growth and employment in a nation, and is currently an essential issue for countries such as Uganda. This book finds that Ragnar’s 1953 ‘Vicious-Circle of Poverty’ remains undisputed even today, showing that attracting FDI is not the end, but that a nation’s absorption capacity is equally paramount. The implications of the FDI ‘frog-leap theory’ for developing countries and the Community Capital Absorption Capacity Development (CCACD) framework provide plausible poverty reduction approaches in the 21st century. Without such measures, bringing an end to poverty is likely to elude governments and multinational corporations in developing countries.

Book excerpt: If the needs for training for leadership are recognized as urgent, we need to ask whether the training institutes are doing the right things and question the effectiveness of training institutions. This book calls for a serious and critical reflection on the way in which we conceptualize training for leadership in the second decade of the 21st century. The different chapters reflect the ideas, theories and practices being dominant today. The thread of the contents show that something is amiss in such training. In general it does not have the expected effects and it often does not address the needs of recipients. The implication is that training for leadership in the future has to be redefined taking into account the specific contingencies, problems and complexities, leaders – especially in developing countries – have to deal with. Leadership cannot be seen as an isolated factor. The different chapters in this book argue that training for effective leadership and good governance practices need to be combined. All ask for leadership that is less hierarchical and more interactive, collaborative, and takes also stakeholders outside the public sector seriously. This has serious implications for the question how leadership training is organized ; the different chapters of this volume address this issue from a theoretical as well as an empirical point of view : developments in theorizing about leadership, styles of public sector leadership, leadership in turbulent times and the importance of contingences on leadership in changing times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do people access movies today? What are the most popular and powerful channels for media distribution on a global scale? How are film industries changing in the face of media convergence and digitisation? To answer questions such as these, argues Ramon Lobato, we must shift our gaze away from the legal film business and toward cinema's shadow economies. All around the world, films are bought from roadside stalls, local markets, and grocery stores; they are illegally downloaded and streamed; they are watched in makeshift video clubs, on street corners, and in restaurants, shops and bars. International film culture in its actually-existing forms is a messy affair, and it relies to a great extent on black and grey media markets. Examining the industrial dynamics of these subterranean film networks across a number of different sites – from Los Angeles to Lagos, Melbourne to Mexico City – this book shows how they constitute a central rather than marginal part of audiovisual culture and commerce. Combining film industry analysis with cultural theory, Shadow Economies of Cinema opens up a new area of inquiry for cinema studies, putting industry research into dialogue with wider debates about economic informality and commodity circulation. Written in an accessible style, this book offers an original 'bottom-up' perspective on the global cinema industry for researchers and students in film studies, cultural studies, and media and communications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Companies and destinations in the tourism sector are confronted with increasing managerial challenges and have to deal with a competitive, turbulent, and fast-changing environment. The understanding that both tourism companies and destinations endowed with the best assets (natural and cultural) cannot survive the escalating international competition without good managerial practices, has provided significant momentum for the development of the disciplinary field of tourism management in the last three decades. This volume recognizes the relevance of travel, tourism, and tourism activities as major economic drivers in the contemporary global economy, with a specific focus on performance, strategies, and sustainability. It is the collective intellectual effort of a number of international scholars, who cultivate original research on tourism management from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Together, they outline the importance for tourism companies and destinations to achieve and maintain a sustained competitive advantage by embracing sustainability and a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) approach to performance.
