She worked as a seamstress, attended the Institute for Colored Youth, and was an active member of her community. Her daily entries from 1863 to 1865 touch on the momentous and the mundane: she discusses her own and her community’s reactions to events of the war, such as the Battle of Gettysburg, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the assassination of President Lincoln, as well as the minutiae of social life in Philadelphia’s black community. Her diaries allow the reader to experience the Civil War in “real time” and are a counterpoint to more widely known diaries of the period. A leader in late eighteenth-century Old Calabar, a cluster of Efik-speaking communities in the Cross River region, he resided in Duke Town, forty-five miles from the Atlantic Ocean in what is now southeast Nigeria. His diary, written in trade English from 1785 to 1788, is a candid account of daily life in an African community at the height of Calabar's overseas commerce. It provides valuable information on Old Calabar's economic activity both with other African businessmen and with European ship captains who arrived to trade for slaves, produce, and provisions. This new edition of Antera's diary, the first in fifty years, draws on the latest scholarship to place the diary in its historical context. I always take some stills as well as video, so the stills are included each day to make a pictorial memory when editing my documentaries on my return home. As well as a spare camera (in case) I always take a tiny Mac laptop with me and quickly design a page completely each day. When I return home I buy photo paper and print out the diary so I have a somewhat rough and ready recall of most of my trips. I always think I will get to them and edit, extend and polish up my words, but I never do, I am always onto the next project. I am totally addicted to travel and meet fascinating people every time.
