Book excerpt: North Carolina Association of Black High School Alumni Closing Message We want to thank the contributors of the histories and additional materials that we have included in this first publication. The stories provide a historical road map of the progressions achieved through our segregated black schools. These schools were really a home-away-from-home. The principals, teachers and staff cared dearly for the students and their success. As most of the students were of farming families, the spring and fall of the year were the most challenging times for these students’ education. Growing up on the farm, the spring of the year was the planting season, and the fall of the year was the time to harvest. This made it nearly impossible for many of the students to keep up with their studies. However, these students were determined to succeed. They did whatever was necessary utilizing family, schoolmates, teachers and coaches to make up missing assignments to graduate successfully.

Book excerpt: John Hope Franklin has devoted his professional life to the study of African Americans. Originally published in 1943 by UNC Press, The Free Negro in North Carolina, 1790-1860 was his first book on the subject. Even in North Carolina, reputedly more liberal than most southern states, discriminatory laws became so harsh that many voluntarily returned to slavery.

Throughout the region's unjust past, generations have shown extraordinary strength and resolve. Floyd McKissick became the first African American student at the University of North Carolina School of Law after Thurgood Marshall argued for his admittance in court. The struggle for civil rights in Durham shaped the poetry of Jaki Shelton Green, one of the state's most esteemed wordsmiths. More recently, local leaders such as Michelle Johnson find the work of equality is far from over. Journalist and writer Jean Bolduc reveals the voices of Durham and Orange County African Americans in a series of inspirational oral histories.

Download or read book Junaluska written by Susan E. Keefe and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Junaluska is one of the oldest African American communities in western North Carolina and one of the few surviving today. After Emancipation, many former slaves in Watauga County became sharecroppers, were allowed to clear land and to keep a portion, or bought property outright, all in the segregated neighborhood on the hill overlooking the town of Boone, North Carolina. Land and home ownership have been crucial to the survival of this community, whose residents are closely interconnected as extended families and neighbors. Missionized by white Krimmer Mennonites in the early twentieth century, their church is one of a handful of African American Mennonite Brethren churches in the United States, and it provides one of the few avenues for leadership in the local black community. Susan Keefe has worked closely with members of the community in editing this book, which is based on three decades of participatory research. These life history narratives adapted from interviews with residents (born between 1885 and 1993) offer a people's history of the black experience in the southern mountains. Their stories provide a unique glimpse into the lives of African Americans in Appalachia during the 20th century--and a community determined to survive through the next.
