Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This large and authoritative guide to published works in African Studies has been published under the auspices of the International African Institute annually since 1984. The Africa Bibliography includes a wide range of material: monographs, chapters in edited volumes, journal articles, and pamphlets. It covers all regions of Africa, including North Africa and the continent's associated islands. It lists works published in English as well as a number of other languages, including Portuguese, French, Italian, German and, more occasionally, Swahili, Spanish and Afrikaans. The Bibliography categorises by region, country and subject; and includes an author index and a detailed thematic index. One reason for its remarkably comprehensive coverage is that it includes materials on Africa published in subject-specific scholarly journals, in addition to specialist Africa publications. Presented in a uniquely reader-friendly page layout, the Africa Bibliography records publications on Africa of interest to students of Africa, principally in the social and environmental sciences, humanities and arts; some items from the medical, biological and natural sciences, likely to be of interest to a reader from a social science/arts background, are also included. As an annual publication, it records the previous year's published work in its field, with provision for retrospective inclusion of earlier items. It is prepared in association with the International African Institute's journal Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the rich and often heroic story of the press in Liberia. Early newspapers were infused with a broad race consciousness which gave way to a specific nationalism at the turn of the last century. Initially, newspapers featured biting social commentary and enjoyed wide latitude to criticise officials, but restrictions were soon applied. Exploring the uses and abuses of power, the author demonstrates that the experience of Liberia provides a sobering corrective to the current euphoria regarding the effects of globalisation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of Africa’s most influential and eloquent essayists, a posthumous collection that highlights his biting satire and subversive wisdom on topics from travel to cultural identity to sexuality “A fierce literary talent . . . [Wainaina] shines a light on his continent without cliché.”—The Guardian “Africa is the only continent you can love—take advantage of this. . . . Africa is to be pitied, worshipped, or dominated. Whichever angle you take, be sure to leave the strong impression that without your intervention and your important book, Africa is doomed.” Binyavanga Wainaina was a pioneering voice in African literature, an award-winning memoirist and essayist remembered as one of the greatest chroniclers of contemporary African life. This groundbreaking collection brings together, for the first time, Wainaina’s pioneering writing on the African continent, including many of his most critically acclaimed pieces, such as the viral satirical sensation “How to Write About Africa.” Working fearlessly across a range of topics—from politics to international aid, cultural heritage, and redefined sexuality—he describes the modern world with sensual, emotional, and psychological detail, giving us a full-color view of his home country and continent. These works present the portrait of a giant in African literature who left a tremendous legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compiled in this volume is the most significant accumulation of works on the subject of African American leadership to date. As the field of leadership studies continues to grow, this timely work contributes to an understanding of the activities of those people and organizations that have been leaders of people of African descent and have contributed to the cultural and political affairs of the black community, as well as the representation of the black community in mainstream American life. The annotated entries cover a variety of works on subjects such as dedicated black leadership studies, local descriptions and analyses, biographies, leadership organizations, and audio-visual materials. This reference is an important contribution to the field of leadership studies in general, and African American leadership in particular, and will serve as a valuable research tool for educators and practitioners alike. The entries are organized into six sections, which offer a broad overview of the various aspects of African American leadership. Part I, Critical Studies and Appraisals, focuses on the history of works dedicated to both national and local leaders and their politically relevant activities. The next section, Local Leadership Studies, is organized around black leaders who served local communities and the various issues they addressed. Part III looks at relevant social movements and ideologies that have highlighted the activities of black leaders. Individual leaders who have made contributions to the political life of the black community are included in Part IV, while leadership organizations are highlighted in Part V. The concluding section of the volume looks at available audio-visual materials. A thorough index rounds out the bibliography.

Book excerpt: This book reveals how conventional anthropology has consistently imposed European ideas of the "natural" nuclear family, women as passive object, and class differences on a continent with a long history of women with power doing things differently. Amadiume argues for an end to anthropology and calls instead for a social history of Africa, by Africans.
