Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Afoot and Afloat IN the town of Roxbury, among the western Catskills, was born April 3, 1837, John Burroughs. The house in which he first saw the light was an unpainted, squarish structure, only a single story high, with a big chimney in the middle. This house was removed a few years later, and a better and somewhat larger one, which still stands, was built in its place. The situation is very pleasing. Roundabout is a varied country of heights, dales woods and pastures, and cultivated fields. The dwelling is in a wide upland hollow that falls away to the east and south into a deep valley, beyond which rise line on line of great mounding hills. These turn blue in the distance and look like immense billows rolling in from a distant ocean. There were ten children in the Burroughs family, and John was the seventh of this numerous household. He was a true country boy, acquainted with all the hard work and all the pleasures of an old-fashioned farm life. His people were poor and he had his own way to make in the world, but the environment was on the whole a salutary one. He has always had a marked affection for the place of his birth, and he rejoices in the fact that from an eminence near his present home on the Hudson he can see mountains that are visible from his native hills. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Afoot and Afloat in Burma Just across the Bay of Bengal in India, its next-door neighbor, is Burma. It is very different from India, not only as to the general appearance of the country itself, but also as regards the people, their manner of living, and the language spoken. That this should be so is really not hard to under stand. Though joined by land to India in the north, Burma is separated from that country by mountain ranges which are difficult to cross. This has left the country shut in and isolated from earliest times. The pages of Indian history are scarred by the records of, Alexander the Great and other invaders, and the country and people have been influenced greatly by these various conquerors, yet Burma has been sheltered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Afloat on the Flood The four chums had only a short time before returned from an Eastern camping trip up amidst the hills about fifteen miles from town. They had experienced some strange adventures while in camp, most of which hinged upon an event that had taken place in Carson one windy night, when the big round-top of a visiting circus blew down in a sudden gale, and many of the menagerie ani mals were set free. At the time of their home-coming the boys had certainly never anticipated that there would be a renewal of activity in such a short time. Why, it seemed that they had hardly become settled again at their studies when the rapid rising of the Ever green River on Friday night brought the town of Ca'rson face to face with a threatened disaster that might yet be appalling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days of the Colonists The exploring party was following the river, which Smith reckoned by his compass to be hereabouts more or less parallel to the James. The weather was mild and delicate, with no sign of winter, and he meant to keep on somehow, afoot or afloat, until he found that corn. When the shallop, a sloop-rigged craft of about twelve tons, could go no further, he could take the two Indians and two white companions and proceed by canoe. This he presently did, leaving the rest to guard the sailing vessel where it lay at anchor. A while after the canoe disappeared those who te mained thought they caught a glimpse Of shadowy figures flitting in the same direction through the forest, though the woodlands were as silent as the creeping waters. Then they fancied that far away they heard shots and a cry, but nothing more occurred, nor did any message or Sign come from their leader. At last they gave up hope and went back to Jamestown. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventh-day Adventism was born as a radical millenarian sect in nineteenth-century America. It has since spread across the world, achieving far more success in Latin America, Africa, and Asia than in its native land. In what seems a paradox, Adventist expectation of Christ’s imminent return has led the denomination to develop extensive educational, publishing, and health systems. Increasingly established within a variety of societies, Adventism over time has modified its views on many issues and accommodated itself to the “delay” of the Second Advent. In the process, it has become a multicultural religion that nonetheless reflects the dominant influence of its American origins. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Seventh-Day Adventists covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on key people, cinema, politics and government, sports, and critics of Ellen White. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Seventh-day Adventism.

Book excerpt: Covering the Millerite movement of the 1830s and 1840s, sabbatarian Adventism prior to organization of the denomination, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church since its organization in 1861-63, this volume provides a comprehensive history of the denomination. The first major element of the book is a chronology of Adventist history that begins with William Miller's conclusion in 1818 that the Second Advent of Jesus would occur about 1843 and extends through the Science and Theology Conferences of 2002-04. The interpretive introduction that follows places the emergence of Adventism within the context of the Second Great Awakening, describes the development of sabbatarian Adventism from its early opposition to church organization to its highly institutionalized and bureaucratically structured contemporary form, and examines the denomination's geographical expansion from a small North American sect to a global church. The dictionary entries that constitute the bulk of the volume address individuals, organizations, institutions, and doctrines that have been important in the history of the church, including dissident movements and individuals who have emerged as critics of the denomination and its beliefs. Second, there are entries on the development and current situation of Adventism in many individual countries. Finally, thematic entries on such subjects as art, music, literature, health care, and women address other elements important to understanding church life. The dictionary entries are followed by a bibliography of scholarly and popular works published by the denomination, commercial and academic presses, and individuals and organizations.
