This concept is better expressed by the philosophy "as you go, so go your children." A lucky child is cherished on the knees of a loving, educated mother. Unfortunately, I was a child deprived of love and affection by my parents in early childhood. An attempt was made to write my autobiography in memoir style. It was an interesting search to find and verify the motivation that made me tolerate the hard process of education while facing numerous problems and obstacles during the early period of my childhood. This work is in chronological order and consists of twenty-one chapters (i.e., memories of childhood and the later stages of education, as well as the impacts of the working environment in the course of time). In this regard, the translation of this poem is expressive: Say first thou who are your friends? Then I would say thee would be concerned. It often happens that children stray even if they have educated and wealthy parents. On the other hand, sometimes it has been observed that a fulcrum caused to become a benevolent and useful person to the human society. What a strange secret is hidden there. This is my tenet, to pass away conscientiously rather than be a perennial recalcitrant ignorant. Whatever has happened to me, I hope other children do not suffer the same thing. Even though my dispersed writing may be a form of writing style, all that I have said in these three distinguished periods of my life are not fabricated, not a single idea or action. I am proud of that, to say what I have mentioned. Some are episodes that happened to me, and a few ones to others. I consider them to have significant and effective points for my children and to others who are in need.

The main objective of the book is to deepen readers understanding of the impact of bureaucratic politics on nation-building in Afghanistan, focusing primarily on the Bush Administration. It rejects the ’rational actor’ model, according to which the US functions as a coherent, monolithic agent. Instead, internal divisions within the foreign policy bureaucracy are explored, to build up a picture of the internal tensions and contradictions that bedevilled US nation-building efforts. Book excerpt: I was born in the mountainous remote district of Pech, Kunar Province, in eastern Afghanistan, before it became known as the Valley of Death during decades of relentless wars. As the oldest of ten children, encumbered by the constant threat of fatal disease, due to a lack of sanitation and clean water, as well as an ongoing struggle to attain a good education, we were forced to survive on very little while growing up in the extremely traditional and conservative Pashtun tribal society. I was exposed early on to discrimination, the demands of tribal loyalty, and the challenges of self-sufficiency and responsibility. These themes permeated every facet of my upbringing and form the cornerstones of my memoir. Even though I never dreamed that I would have the opportunity to leave the confines of my village and venture out to major cities inside my country, a combination of intention, hope, and luck allowed me to cross the borders of my native land into a wider world, which enabled me to find a better life and help for my family members who remained back home. My story is one of many hardships, ups and downs, and volatile twists and turns; but it has turned out well so far. I see myself now as a person who was swept away by a storm and barely held on to the things that ensured survival. I have faced moments of danger quite a few times but emerged from them relatively unscathed, primarily because of support from my immediate family and relatives. As a young boy, newly graduated from elementary school, I traveled alone to Kabul, where I knew no one. I look upon those days as an uncharted journey through alien territory, during which I repeatedly relied on my ability to persevere, work hard, adapt to new circumstances, and succeed, without sacrificing my heritage and all that it means to me. An Afghan Remembers embraces these obstacles and presents them in a transparent light. My memoir offers a menu of ingredients for living a life of purpose, passion, and optimism. The central message of my inspiring story will allow readers to come away with the understanding that life is short, power is a fickle thing, and you never know what's around the corner. Most important, and this should never get old, is remembering that America is a nation built on opportunity and optimism, which was the case two hundred years ago and still holds true today. Inspired by the Pashto saying "No matter where a person goes, he always comes back to the children of his ancestors," any profits from sales of my book will benefit a high school for girls in Khas Kunar, Kunar, Afghanistan.

Focusing on a case study of Russians and Russian immigrants to the USA and their memories of seminal events in the twentieth-century Russian collective past, Isurin shows how autobiographical memory contributes to the formation of collective memory, and also examines how the memory of the shared past is reconstructed by those who stayed with the group and those who left. By bringing together historical, anthropological, and psychological approaches, Collective Remembering provides a new theoretical framework for memory studies that incorporates both content analysis of texts and empirical data from human participants, thus demonstrating that methodologies from the humanities and the social sciences can complement each other to create a better understanding of how memory works in the world and in the mind.
