Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the relationship between representation, affect, and emotion in texts for children and young adults. It demonstrates how texts for young people function as tools for emotional socialisation, enculturation, and political persuasion. The collection provides an introduction to this emerging field and engages with the representation of emotions, ranging from shame, grief, and anguish to compassion and happiness, as psychological and embodied states and cultural constructs with ideological significance. It also explores the role of narrative empathy in relation to emotional socialisation and to the ethics of representation in relation to politics, social justice, and identity categories including gender, ethnicity, disability, and sexuality. Addressing a range of genres, including advice literature, novels, picture books, and film, this collection examines contemporary, historical, and canonical children’s and young adult literature to highlight the variety of approaches to emotion and affect in these texts and to consider the ways in which these approaches offer new perspectives on these texts. The individual chapters apply a variety of theoretical approaches and perspectives, including cognitive poetics, narratology, and poststructuralism, to the analysis of affect and emotion in children’s and young adult literature.

Book excerpt: Learning How to Feel explores the ways in which children and adolescents learn not just how to express emotions that are thought to be pre-existing, but actually how to feel. The volume assumes that the embryonic ability to feel unfolds through a complex dialogue with the social and cultural environment and specifically through reading material. The fundamental formation takes place in childhood and youth. A multi-authored historical monograph, Learning How to Feel uses children's literature and advice manuals to access the training practices and learning processes for a wide range of emotions in the modern age, circa 1870-1970. The study takes an international approach, covering a broad array of social, cultural, and political milieus in Britain, Germany, India, Russia, France, Canada, and the United States. Learning How to Feel places multidirectional learning processes at the centre of the discussion, through the concept of practical knowledge. The book innovatively draws a framework for broad historical change during the course of the period. Emotional interaction between adult and child gave way to a focus on emotional interactions among children, while gender categories became less distinct. Children were increasingly taught to take responsibility for their own emotional development, to find 'authenticity' for themselves. In the context of changing social, political, cultural, and gender agendas, the building of nations, subjects and citizens, and the forging of moral and religious values, Learning How to Feel demonstrates how children were provided with emotional learning tools through their reading matter to navigate their emotional lives.

Book excerpt: Emotion in Texts for Children and Young Adults: Moving stories takes up key issues in affect studies while putting forward new approaches and ways of thinking about the intricate entanglements of emotion, affect, and story in relation to the functions, processes, and influences of texts designed for youth. With an emphasis on national literatures and international scholarship, it examines a variety of storytelling forms, formats, genres, and media crafted for readers ranging from the very young to the newly adult. Layering recent cognitive approaches to emotion, affect studies, and feminist perspectives on emotion, it investigates not only what texts for children and young adults have to say about emotion but also how such texts try to move their readers. In this, the chapters draw attention to the ways narrative literary texts address, elicit, shape, and/or embody emotion.

Book excerpt: Help your child self-regulate their emotions. The Emotions Books: A Little Story About BIG Feelings teaches emotional control and how to effectively act when faced with overwhelming feelings or challenging circumstances. Throughout this vibrant story, Louie, a brave little elephant, teaches children that when they experience big feelings, their body and mind are simply telling them something; perhaps a hug is needed or they need to take a break and breath. Focusing on four primary emotions: anger, sadness, frustration, and happiness - children will learn to welcome their feelings and listen to them instead of impulsively reacting. Managing big emotions can help children act effectively and solve conflict independently while working their way back to a calm, happy state. The Emotions Book: A Little Story About BIG Feelings is the 5th book in its series and follows the theme of helping children find their inner bravery by navigating change, transitions, and new feelings. The 4 BIG Emotions: Anger: An intense, heightened emotion can often be overwhelming to children and can lead to adverse reactions when not understanding the core reason why they feel this way. When in a fiery state, children need to learn to stop and breathe before reacting. Calming and self-soothing oneself is an essential first step. Sadness: An emotional pain associated with feelings of loss, despair, grief, helplessness, and disappointment. Sadness can be especially hard for a child when they don't have comfort or understanding of why their feeling this way or that it's simply OK to feel sad sometimes. Frustration: An emotional response to conflict or opposition. Frustration can often occur from being unable to solve a problem, experiencing a roadblock, or annoyance. Frustration in a child can often lead to anger and adverse reactions if one does not take caution. Stopping to take a break is often a great way to prevent irritation and pivot. Happiness: An emotional state characterized by feelings of satisfaction, joy, and fulfillment. When a child is happy, they are often calm and ready to learn. Teaching children techniques like breathing, stopping, and realizing the core of their feelings is a critical way to get back to feeling happy. Through the Brave Kid Press book series, your child will learn: ✓ The importance of trying something new. ✓ How to self-regulate BIG emotions. ✓ That bravery lies within and we can access it at any time. ✓ The importance and benefits of curiosity and being open-minded. ✓ Overcoming new challenges can often lead to even more fun and adventure! ✓ How to find security with change in a new environment. ✓ That sleep is essential for everyone and allows us to have more fun when we're awake. ✓ The importance of consistency. Grit and perseverance help challenges become easier with time. ✓ The incredible feeling of conquering hard things! ✓ That kindness always wins.

Book excerpt: In this volume González explores how the effects of a traumatic colonial experience are (re)presented to Latin American children today, almost two centuries after the dismantling of colonialism proper. Central to this study is the argument that the historical constraints of colonialism, neocolonialism, and postcolonialism have generated certain repeating themes and literary strategies in children’s literature throughout the Spanish-speaking Americas. From the outset of Spanish domination, fundamental tensions emerged between the colonizers and native groups that still exist to this day. Rather than a felicitous mixing of these two opposing groups, the mestizo is caught between contrasting worldviews, contending explanations of reality, and different values, beliefs, and epistemologies (that is, different ways of seeing and knowing). Postcolonial subjects experience these contending cultural beliefs and practices as a double bind, a no-win situation, in which they feel pressured by mutually exclusive expectations and imperatives. Latin American mestizos, therefore, are inevitably conflicted. Despite the vastness of the geography in question and the innumerable variations in regional histories, oral traditions, and natural settings, these contradictory demands create a pervasive dynamic that penetrates the very fabric of society, showing up intentionally or not in the stories passed from generation to generation as well as in new stories written or adapted for Spanish-speaking children. The goal of this study, therefore, is to examine a variety of children’s texts from the region to determine how national and hemispheric perceptions of reality, identity, and values are passed to the next generation. This book will appeal to scholars in the fields of Latin American literary and cultural studies, children’s literature, postcolonial studies, and comparative literature.
