Book excerpt: Writings about art and creativity can be traced to the texts of classical antiquity, but aesthetics as a separate and systematic area of philosophy is almost wholly a product of the eighteenth century. It was at that time that philosophers began to treat notions about creativity and our responses to it with the kind of philosophical rigour found in epistemology and metaphysics. Eighteenth-century authors sought to define what poetry, literature, painting and sculpture were and to determine the links between the various forms of artistic expression. They questioned whether artistic sensitivity could be acquired or was innate, and asked how good taste was cultivated and maintained. This collection gathers together many of the authors and works that tackled these questions in the eighteenth century. Foregoing the most well-known and easily accessible aesthetics texts, this set presents some of the rarest, less well-known but equally important works - books that made a substantial contribution when first published but which have since been neglected. The authors include important eighteenth-century figures such as Daniel Webb, John Gilbert Cooper, and William Jackson. Readers familiar with the works of famous aestheticians such as Hume, Shaftesbury, Burke, and Home will find much to interest them in these writings and will gain valuable background information on the aesthetics debate. --collects the less well-known 18th-century aesthetics texts --includes very scarce titles, rarely found even in major libraries --features neglected authors and titles that should be read alongside the better-known, already available, works --extensive new general introduction plus notes on each author and text by John Valdimir Price, highly respected authority on eighteenth-century philosophy and co- editor of The Dictionary of 18th-Century British Philosophers (forthcoming, 1999)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music as a Science of Mankind offers a philosophical and historical perspective on the intellectual representation of music in British eighteenth-century culture. From the field of natural philosophy, involving the science of sounds and acoustics, to the realm of imagination, involving resounding music and art, the branches of modern culture that were involved in the intellectual tradition of the science of music proved to be variously appealing to men of letters. Among these, a particularly rich field of investigation was the British philosophy of the mind and of human understanding, developed between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which looked at music and found in its realm a way of understanding human experience. Focussing on the world of sensation - trying to describe how the human mind could develop ideas and emotions by its means - philosophers and physicians often took their cases from art's products, be it music (sounds), painting (colours) or poetry (words as signs of sound conveying a meaning), thus looking at art from a particular point of view: that of the perceiving mind. The relationship between music and the philosophies of mind is presented here as a significant part of the construction of a Science of Man: a huge and impressive 'project' involving both the study of man's nature, to which - in David Hume's words - 'all sciences have a relation', and the creation of an ideal of what Man should be. Maria Semi sheds light on how these reflections moved towards a Science of Music: a complex and articulated vision of the discipline that was later to be known as 'musicology'; or Musikwissenschaft.

Download or read book Textual Vision written by Timothy Erwin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stylish critique of literary attitudes towards painting, TextualVision explores the simultaneous rhetorical formation and empirical fragmentation of visual reading in enlightenment Britain. Beginning with an engaging treatment of Pope's Rape of the Lock, Timothy Erwin takes the reader on a guided tour of the pointed allusion, apt illustration, or the subtle appeal to the mind's eye within a wide array of genres and texts, before bringing his linked case studies to a surprising close with the fiction of Jane Austen. At once carefully researched, theoretically informed and highly imaginative, Textual Vision situates textual vision at the cultural crossroads of ancient pictura-poesis doctrine and modernist aesthetics. It provides reliable interpretive poles for reading enlightenment imagery, offers vivid new readings of familiar works, and promises to invigorate the study of Restoration and eighteenth-century visual culture.

Book Synopsis The Essentials of Aesthetics in Music, Poetry, Painting, Sculpture and Architecture by : George Lansing Raymond
Download or read book The Essentials of Aesthetics in Music, Poetry, Painting, Sculpture and Architecture written by George Lansing Raymond and published by . This book was released on 1909 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to determine for the reader, if possible, the qualities causing excellence in the higher arts, and to increase his appreciation of them. The phenomena of the arts of the highest class have been traced to their sources in material nature and in the human mind; the different arts have been shown to be developed by exactly similar methods; and these methods have been shown to characterize the entire work of artistic imagination, from the formulation of physical concepts to that of their most physical expressions in rhythm, proportion, and harmony. Conjointly with these subjects, the effects of all the arts together upon everything that makes for culture and for humanity have been considered in themselves, as well as in their relations to religion and to science, to both of which art is somewhat allied, and yet in such ways as to make it important that the three should be differentiated. - Preface.
Book Synopsis History of Aesthetics by : Wladyslaw Tatarkiewicz
Download or read book History of Aesthetics written by Wladyslaw Tatarkiewicz and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tatarkiewicz's History of Aesthetics is an extremely comprehensive account of the development of European aesthetics from the time of the ancient Greeks to the 1700s. Published originally in Polish in 1962-7, it achieved bestseller status and acclaim as the best work of its kind in the world. The English translation of 1970-74 is a rare masterpiece. Covering ancient, medieval and modern aesthetics, Tatarkiewicz writes substantial essays on the views of beauty and art through the ages and then goes on to demonstrate these with extracts from original texts from each period. The authors he cites include Homer, Democritus, Plato, St Augustine, Boethius, Thomas Aquinas, Dante, William of Ockham, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo, Bacon, Shakespeare and Rubens. His study is systematic and extremely wide, including the aesthetics of the archaic period, the classical period, Hellenistic aesthetics, Eastern Aesthetics, Western Aesthetics, the Renaissance, sixteenth-century visual arts, poetry and music, Italian, English, Spanish and Polish aesthetics of the sixteenth century, Baroque aesthetics, and theories of painting and architecture in the seventeeth century. Tatarkiewicz (1886-1981) was the most distinguished Polish historian of philosophy of the twentieth century, with an international reputation as an aesthetician and authority in art criticism, the history of art and classical scholarship. The erudition, lucidity and clarity of his writing make this unique work an accessible and invaluable source for the study of the history of aesthetics.
