Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Context-sensitive solutions (CSS) reflect the need to consider highway projects as more than just transportation facilities. Depending on how highway projects are integrated into the community, they can have far-reaching impacts beyond their traffic or transportation function. CSS is a comprehensive process that brings stakeholders together in a positive, proactive environment to develop projects that not only meet transportation needs, but also improve or enhance the community. Achieving a flexible, context-sensitive design solution requires designers to fully understand the reasons behind the processes, design values, and design procedures that are used. This AASHTO Guide shows highway designers how to think flexibly, how to recognize the many choices and options they have, and how to arrive at the best solution for the particular situation or context. It also strives to emphasize that flexible design does not necessarily entail a fundamentally new design process, but that it can be integrated into the existing transportation culture. This publication represents a major step toward institutionalizing CSS into state transportation departments and other agencies charged with transportation project development.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to describe an approach for considering aesthetics as integral to highway design. By 'aesthetics' I intend the true meaning of the word, enhancing the visual quality of the highway setting, integrating the road with the landscape, improving the overall form of the roadway. I do not mean simply 'beautifying' the road with trees and shrubs once the route has been selected and the road has been engineered. Consideration of aesthetics simply cannot be added to evaluation or engineering. I will, however, suggest an approach for reconsidering aesthetics, right along with geometrics and operation and safety, etc. in every stage of highway planning and design starting at the preliminary stages. A fully integrated multidisciplinary approach is essential to ensure that unquantifiable environmental amenities and values are considered along with economic, technical and quantifiable environmental concerns in highway planning and design. This means using a design team of engineers, landscape architects and planners in all phases of route selection, preliminary design and detailed design. If we assume that design is the art of making technology (in this case highways) livable, aesthetics - the integration of the highway with the landscape - should be at the foundation of the design process. It should be inherent in the design process, not only evaluated once the route has been selected or the highway has been engineered. And if it is, it need not be evaluated, because it is the basis upon which all routes or alignments were generated. We are realizing that highway design is more than an engineering problem. To reflect a higher, more responsible concern for the road's aesthetic quality, design requires a collaborative effort among many professions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aesthetic Awareness of Design in Improvements to Us 22, and Heritage Route Selection Criteria: Southwestern Pennsylvania Federal and state legislation will be sought by the Heritage Preservation Commission to designate US 22 as the William Penn National Heritage Highway and to improve US 22. The proposed improvements are anticipated to be funded as a federal demonstration project. As indicated in the Action Plan, national heritage highway designation will [likely] specify design and construction standards for US 22 as a parkway-like, largely limited access, four-lane facility that provides a safe and quality driving experience for visitors and an efficient route for commercial truck traffic. The project will demonstrate that parkway-like design treatment can be blended with a modem four-lane divided highway. Penndot will determine the appropriate roadway configuration and treatments for the various segments in the aihp area. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains guidelines for aesthetic treatment of concrete safety shape barriers. The report will be of particular interest to design and safety practitioners with responsibility for roadside safety improvements. The increasing application of context-sensitive design solutions for highway projects has created a national need for aesthetic improvement of typical highway features. Requests for concrete barrier treatments and bridge rails that contribute to the overall aesthetic experience are increasing. Concrete barriers (e.g., New Jersey, F-shapes, single-slope, and vertical-face designs) are often the barriers of choice in urban and suburban environments. Many transportation agencies and communities have expressed a desire for aesthetic treatments for these standard shapes. To date, there has been limited evaluation to determine which aesthetic treatments are safe and practical. Designers need guidance regarding the safety implications of aesthetic treatments for concrete barriers.
