Book excerpt: On 17 December 1903 at Kitty Hawk, NC, the Wright brothers succeeded in achieving controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine. This feat was accomplished by them only after meticulous experiments and a study of the work of others before them like Sir George Cayley, Otto Lilienthal, and Samuel Langley. The first evidence of the academic community becoming interested in human flight is found in 1883 when Professor J. J. Montgomery of Santa Clara College conducted a series of glider tests. Seven years later, in 1890, Octave Chanute presented a number of lectures to students of Sibley College, Cornell University entitled Aerial Navigation. This book is a collection of papers solicited from U. S. universities or institutions with a history of programs in Aerospace/Aeronautical engineering. There are 69 institutions covered in the 71 chapters. This collection of papers represents an authoritative story of the development of educational programs in the nation that were devoted to human flight. Most of these programs are still in existence but there are a few papers covering the history of programs that are no longer in operation. documented in Part I as well as the rapid expansion of educational programs relating to aeronautical engineering that took place in the 1940s. Part II is devoted to the four schools that were pioneers in establishing formal programs. Part III describes the activities of the Guggenheim Foundation that spurred much of the development of programs in aeronautical engineering. Part IV covers the 48 colleges and universities that were formally established in the mid-1930s to the present. The military institutions are grouped together in the Part V; and Part VI presents the histories of those programs that evolved from proprietary institutions.

Book excerpt: The principal difference between a wrap around fin and a planar fin is that the WAF exhibits an induced rolling moment at zero degree angle of attack, while a straight fin has none. The Naval Ordnance Laboratory, along with other members of The Technical Cooperation Program, initiated a joint investigation into the causes of the induced roll moment. Measurements of the pressure distribution over both the convex and concave sides of a WAF showed that the primary difference in pressure across the fin occurred immediately behind the leading edge with the pressure on the convex side apparently being affected more by the curvature than that on the concave side. In general, for a WAF with fixed curvature, it appeared that the physical characteristic which would have the most effect on changing the roll moment would be the fin cross-sectional profile, especially the leading-edge profile. Two plume-shaped solid bodies and three step-type plume simulators were tested. The effects on model pressure distribution of small angle of attack and plume-simulator position were investigated. The analysis showed that all the plume simulators tested can give approximately the same model afterbody pressure distribution at transonic Mach numbers and small angles of attack as an actual rocket plume. The project is being led by the United States, with the participation of Japan, the European Space Agency, Canada, Italy, Russia, and Brazil. Russia is participating in full partnership with the United States in the fabrication of ISS modules, the assembly of ISS elements on orbit, and, after assembly has been completed, the day-to-day operation of the station. Construction of the ISS began with the launch of the Russian Zarya module in November 1998 followed by the launch of the U.S. Unity module in December 1998. The two modules were mated and interconnected by the crew of the Space Shuttle during the December flight, and the first assembled element of the ISS was in place. Construction will continue with the delivery of components and assembly on orbit through a series of 46 planned flights. During the study period, the Assembly Complete milestone was scheduled for November 2004 with the final ISS construction flight delivering the U.S. Habitation Module. Engineering Challenges to the Long-Term Operation of the International Space Station is a study of the engineering challenges posed by longterm operation of the ISS. This report states that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the ISS developers have focused almost totally on completing the design and development of the station and completing its assembly in orbit. This report addresses the issues and opportunities related to long-term operations.

Book excerpt: Turbulent skin-friction coefficients directly measured on an axisymmetric five-degree-half-angle sharp cone by two floating-element skin-friction balances at a free-stream Mach number of 7.9 are presented. Heat-transfer distributions are obtained simultaneously. These results yield directly the Reynolds analogy factor. Experimental data are used to evaluate four predictive methods. Except for the relatively low-Reynolds-number case, the directly measured sharp-cone Reynolds analogy factor is between 1.01 and 1.07, which is in good agreement with recent flat-plate measurements. Results indicate that the Stanton Number is essentially constant for one range and decreases by about 10 percent in another. (Modified author abstract).

The tests were conducted at a free-stream Mach number of 4.9 with a range of unit Reynolds numbers varying from 0.8 x 10 to the 6th power per foot to 4.0 x 10 to the 6th power per foot.
