Book excerpt: The Tupolev Tu-154 was one of the most successful and long-lived of Soviet/Russian jet airliners. It was developed in response to the need for a state-of-the-art medium-haul jet airliner that would succeed the twin-engined Tu-104. Sharing the 'T-tail' layout of the Boeing 727 an the Hawker Siddeley Trident, the prototype took to the air on October 3, 1968. It became not only the principal medium-haul aircraft of the Soviet airline Aeroflot, but also one of the Soviet Union's best sellers on the commercial aircraft market. This new Aerofax volume covers the Tu-54 fully, tracing its development and operational history and describing all known versions and variants, including some unrealized projects that were based on the airplane. Includes a detailed production list, operator lists on a country-by-country basis, accident details, and numerous color photos and line drawings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the extraordinary story of what was once the world's largest airline. Pan-Am, TWA, BOAC, Sabena and countless other carriers have all flown away for good, but despite the odds, Aeroflot jets continue to soar in the skies above.By the early 1980s it was estimated that 1 in 10 of the world's flights was an Aeroflot one. The Cold War was longest-lasting conflict in modern history and throughout it; Aeroflot was the unique symbol of the Soviet Union.Nowadays, Aeroflot is one of the world's leading brands, but this unknown giant was treated with suspicion as it extended its operations into Western Europe and the rest of the world during the 50s and 60s.Russia's extraordinary transition from the propeller airplane to the jet with the launch of the TU-104, is one of the defining moments in the race for technical supremacy, but their desperate quest for supersonic travel was a disaster. In Soviet times, Aeroflot wasn't just providing commercial passenger services, it also ran air ambulance; heavy lifting craft for the Soviet Space Agency; offshore oil platform support; exploration surveys for natural resources; crop spraying, support for construction projects; transport of military troops and supplies and atmospheric research; and remote area patrol. 2017 was a rotten year for air travel, but not for Aeroflot. As Ryanair grappled with a pilot shortage, United Airlines reeled from the fallout when a passenger was dragged off a plane and a British Airways blunder disrupted tens of thousands of people's travel plans - Aeroflot were riding high taking the prestigious World's Leading Airline Brand prize at the World Travel Awards, soon after, it was named the 'world's most powerful airline brand' by Brand Finance

Book excerpt: The first book to tell the story of the Soviet airline, featuring previously unseen ephemera Despite the borders of the USSR being closed to the majority of its population, Soviet citizens were among the world's most frequent flyers. Following the 1917 Revolution, Vladimir Lenin made the development of aviation a priority. Assisted by advertising campaigns by artists such as Alexander Rodchenko, Soviet society was mobilized to establish an air fleet--from the very beginning of the USSR through to its demise in 1991, Soviet aviation flew its own unique path. This book unfolds the story of Soviet air travel, from early carriers like Deruluft and Dobrolet to the enigmatic Aeroflot. Organized like an Air Force, with a vast fleet of aircraft and helicopters, Aeroflot was the world's biggest air carrier of passengers and cargo, responsible for a wider range of duties than any other airline. In an era when it was still common to smoke on board, the Aeroflot emblem appeared on cigarette packets, matchboxes and many other everyday goods. Aeroflot publicity alerted domestic passengers to new destinations or proudly presented the introduction of faster, more comfortable aircraft, while colorful advertising enticed Western travelers to use Aeroflot's international services. Aeroflot: Fly Soviet uses this ephemera to illustrate a parallel aviation universe that existed for 70 years. It pays tribute to generations of aircraft engineers, designers, pilots, ticket sellers, flight dispatchers, air traffic controllers, ground handlers and flight attendants, who jointly created this remarkable chapter of Soviet civil aviation history.

The book approaches aviation as an interrelated economic system and in so doing presents the “big picture” of aviation in the market economy. It explains the linkages between domains such as politics, society, technology, economy, ecology, regulation and how these influence each other. Examples of airports and airlines, and case studies in each chapter support the application-oriented approach. Students and researchers in business administration with a focus on the aviation industry, as well as professionals in the industry looking to refresh or broaden their knowledge of the field will benefit from this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of cooking, there has been no more challenging environment than those craft in which humans took to the skies. The tale begins with meals aboard balloons and zeppelins, where cooking was accomplished below explosive bags of hydrogen, ending with space station dinners that were cooked thousands of miles below. This book is the first to chart that history worldwide, exploring the intricacies of inflight dining from 1783 to the present day, aboard balloons, zeppelins, land-based aircraft and flying boats, jets, and spacecraft. It charts the ways in which commercial travelers were lured to try flying with the promise of familiar foods, explains the problems of each aerial environment and how chefs, engineers, and flight crew adapted to them, and tells the stories of pioneers in the field. Hygiene and sanitation were often difficult, and cultural norms and religious practices had to be taken into account. The history is surprising and sometimes humorous at times some ridiculous ideas were tried, and airlines offered some strange meals to try to attract passengers. It’s an engrossing story with quite a few twists and turns, and this first book on the subject tells it with a light touch.

Book excerpt: Though we routinely take to the air, for many of us flying remains a mystery. Few of us understand the how and why of jetting from New York to London in six hours. How does a plane stay in the air? Can turbulence bring it down? What is windshear? How good are the security checks? Patrick Smith, an airline pilot and author of Salon.com's popular column, "Ask the Pilot," unravels the secrets and tells you all there is to know about the strange and fascinating world of commercial flight. He offers: A nuts and bolts explanation of how planes fly Insights into safety and security Straight talk about turbulence, air traffic control, windshear, and crashes The history, color, and controversy of the world's airlines The awe and oddity of being a pilot The poetry and drama of airplanes, airports, and traveling abroad In a series of frank, often funny explanations and essays, Smith speaks eloquently to our fears and curiosities, incorporating anecdotes, memoir, and a life's passion for flight. He tackles our toughest concerns, debunks conspiracy theories and myths, and in a rarely heard voice dares to return a dash of romance and glamour to air travel.

Book excerpt: In the early 1950s, OKB Tupolev, the Tupolev design bureau, was instructed by the Soviet government to design a civil airliner with an intercontinental range. Based upon the earlier four-engined Tu-95 strategic bomber, the resulting aircraft was the largest airliner constructed at that time, providing accommodation for up to 220 passengers. The Tu-144 confounded experts by being able to fly at speeds similar to those achieved by jet aircraft, while still using turboprop technology. The Tu-114 set a number of records, including the speed record for a turbo-prop aircraft that still stands 50 years later. A total of 31 Tu-114's entered service with Aeroflot, operating over long distance internal services and international services to cities from Tokyo to Havana. Gradually replaced from 1971, the last Tu-144 Aeroflot service was withdrawn in 1975. However, a number of the Tu-114's were subsequently converted into AWACS aircraft as the Tu-126 "Moss" for operation in the Soviet navy.
