Book excerpt: A test was conducted in the 16-ft Transonic Wind Tunnel of the Propulsion Wind Tunnel Facility to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a 0.5-scale ejection seat escape system and to determine the stability effects of a stabilization parachute attached to the back of the ejection seat model. The results were obtained for both simulated rocket-off and rocket-on conditions through a model angle-of-attack range from 0 to 30 deg and an angle-of-yaw range from 0 to 15 deg. High-pressure air was used to simulate the escape rocket jet plume at a sea-level altitude. Over the test range of this investigation, the results show that the ejection seat model was statically unstable but became longitudinally and directionally stable with the parachute using the three- and four-point bridle assemblies. Jet simulation and model yaw angle had little effect on the ejection seat longitudinal stability; however, jet simulation increased the parachute drag coefficient. (Author).

Book excerpt: In order to determine the aerodynamic forces acting upon a crew member/escape seat combination at transonic speeds, and the flail potential forces acting on the crewmember's extremities, an existing half scale man/seat combination was integrated with a model of the forward portion of the F-16. The combination was tested in the Arnold Engineering Development Center Propulsion Wind Tunnel (PWT) Facility Transonic Wind Tunnel (16T) during the period September 9 to September 15, 1978, over the Mach number range 0.4 to 1.2. The basic data obtained in this way are reported in Reichenau. The present report describes the experimental set-up in detail and presents some typical force and force area (force/sq. q) plots. From earlier work it was determined that the flow over the model was 'supercritical', implying a turbulent boundary layer at separation, and a reasonably realistic simulation of full-scale conditions. Very marked interference effects were observed on the man/seat combination, due to fuselage proximity. The most dramatic were large increases in upper arm and upper leg flail potential forces. In almost all cases, the most severe interference occurred when a 'flow diverter' was mounted in front of the cockpit. Comparisons with other sources of data revealed generally good agreement, except that the drag of the model was somewhat low; presumably due to the fact that the model was smoother than its full scale equivalent.

Book excerpt: NASA commissioned the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) to conduct a thorough review of both the technical and the organizational causes of the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia and her crew on February 1, 2003. The accident investigation that followed determined that a large piece of insulating foam from Columbia's external tank (ET) had come off during ascent and struck the leading edge of the left wing, causing critical damage. The damage was undetected during the mission. The Columbia accident was not survivable. After the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) investigation regarding the cause of the accident was completed, further consideration produced the question of whether there were lessons to be learned about how to improve crew survival in the future. This investigation was performed with the belief that a comprehensive, respectful investigation could provide knowledge that can protect future crews in the worldwide community of human space flight. Additionally, in the course of the investigation, several areas of research were identified that could improve our understanding of both nominal space flight and future spacecraft accidents. This report is the first comprehensive, publicly available accident investigation report addressing crew survival for a human spacecraft mishap, and it provides key information for future crew survival investigations. The results of this investigation are intended to add meaning to the sacrifice of the crew's lives by making space flight safer for all future generations.

Some of the projects described were a surprise, as I had never heard of them, like reading how a pencil-shaped missile was built that could fly and maneuver over an intercontinental distance at a high hypersonic velocity. He also described how American engineers and scientists fought the Cold War battle for technological supremacy on their desks and in their laboratories. The initiatives by which this enterprising engineer develops his technical approach to a project are very informative and offer the reader an insight into the workings of successful operations. He achieves an interesting behind-the-scenes look at how aerospace history is made by weaving in the historical significance of these projects as they are developed. As a former aeronautical engineer at the rapidly growing Mc- Donnell Aircraft Corporation, Bob gives us an interesting exposure to the importance of top management's relationship with the workforce in a successful company. "Mr. Mac" made it a point to make all his employees team members by frequent communication and friendly association.
