Book Synopsis Commercial Supersonic Technology by : National Research Council
Download or read book Commercial Supersonic Technology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-02-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-speed flight is a major technological challenge for both commercial and business aviation. As a first step in revitalizing efforts by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to achieve the technology objective of high-speed air travel, NASA requested the National Research Council (NRC) to conduct a study that would identify approaches for achieving breakthroughs in research and technology for commercial supersonic aircraft. Commercial Supersonic Technology documents the results of that effort. This report describes technical areas where ongoing work should be continued and new focused research initiated to enable operational deployment of an environmentally acceptable, economically viable commercial aircraft capable of sustained supersonic flight, including flight over land, at speeds up to approximately Mach 2 in the next 25 years or less.

Book Synopsis Advanced Aircraft Design by : Egbert Torenbeek
Download or read book Advanced Aircraft Design written by Egbert Torenbeek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the overall appearance of modern airliners has not changed a lot since the introduction of jetliners in the 1950s, their safety, efficiency and environmental friendliness have improved considerably. Main contributors to this have been gas turbine engine technology, advanced materials, computational aerodynamics, advanced structural analysis and on-board systems. Since aircraft design became a highly multidisciplinary activity, the development of multidisciplinary optimization (MDO) has become a popular new discipline. Despite this, the application of MDO during the conceptual design phase is not yet widespread. Advanced Aircraft Design: Conceptual Design, Analysis and Optimization of Subsonic Civil Airplanes presents a quasi-analytical optimization approach based on a concise set of sizing equations. Objectives are aerodynamic efficiency, mission fuel, empty weight and maximum takeoff weight. Independent design variables studied include design cruise altitude, wing area and span and thrust or power loading. Principal features of integrated concepts such as the blended wing and body and highly non-planar wings are also covered. The quasi-analytical approach enables designers to compare the results of high-fidelity MDO optimization with lower-fidelity methods which need far less computational effort. Another advantage to this approach is that it can provide answers to “what if” questions rapidly and with little computational cost. Key features: Presents a new fundamental vision on conceptual airplane design optimization Provides an overview of advanced technologies for propulsion and reducing aerodynamic drag Offers insight into the derivation of design sensitivity information Emphasizes design based on first principles Considers pros and cons of innovative configurations Reconsiders optimum cruise performance at transonic Mach numbers Advanced Aircraft Design: Conceptual Design, Analysis and Optimization of Subsonic Civil Airplanes advances understanding of the initial optimization of civil airplanes and is a must-have reference for aerospace engineering students, applied researchers, aircraft design engineers and analysts.
Book Synopsis Multi-fidelity, Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization of the Efficient Supersonic Air Vehicle by : Madeline Clare Lickenbrock
Download or read book Multi-fidelity, Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization of the Efficient Supersonic Air Vehicle written by Madeline Clare Lickenbrock and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focuses on the development and testing of a geometrically-parameterized, multi-fidelity, multidisciplinary model of the efficient supersonic air vehicle (ESAV), for multidisciplinary design analysis and optimization (MDAO) purposes. Multidisciplinary features include coupled rigid aerodynamics, flap controls, aero-structural, and therefore aeroelastic capabilities. The model has been verified through grid convergence studies, flow condition sweeps, and various design space studies. The rigid aerodynamics of the model have been validated with subsonic wind tunnel data. The low-fidelity rigid aerodynamics and flap controls are modeled with panel-methods in ASTROS, and the high-fidelity rigid aerodynamics and flap controls are modeled with inviscid Euler analysis using FUN3D. The low-fidelity aero-structural analysis is performed with ASTROS, and the high-fidelity aero-structural analysis uses modal analysis in ASTROS and the resulting modes and displacements are transferred to FUN3D for an inviscid aeroelastic analysis. The rigid aerodynamic and flap controls models have been set up to be connected to a multi-fidelity gradient-based optimizer and results of optimization studies are presented.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This work describes the application of a control theory-based aerodynamic shape optimization method to the problem of supersonic aircraft design. The design process is greatly accelerated through the use of both control theory and a parallel implementation on distributed memory computers. Control theory is employed to derive the adjoint differential equations whose solution allows for the evaluation of design gradient information at a fraction of the computational cost required by previous design methods [13, 12, 44, 38]. The resulting problem is then implemented on parallel distributed memory architectures using a domain decomposition approach, an optimized communication schedule, and the MPI (Message Passing Interface) Standard for portability and efficiency. The final result achieves very rapid aerodynamic design based on higher order computational fluid dynamics methods (CFD). In our earlier studies, the serial implementation of this design method [19, 20, 21, 23, 39, 25, 40, 41, 42, 43, 9] was shown to be effective for the optimization of airfoils, wings, wing-bodies, and complex aircraft configurations using both the potential equation and the Euler equations [39, 25]. In our most recent paper, the Euler method was extended to treat complete aircraft configurations via a new multiblock implementation. Furthermore, during the same conference, we also presented preliminary results demonstrating that this basic methodology could be ported to distributed memory parallel computing architectures [24]. In this paper, our concern will be to demonstrate that the combined power of these new technologies can be used routinely in an industrial design environment by applying it to the case study of the design of typical supersonic transport configurations. A particular difficulty of this test case is posed by the propulsion/airframe integration."

Download or read book High-Fidelity Aero-Structural Design Optimization of a Supersonic Business Jet written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the demonstration of an integrated aero-structural method for the design of aerospace vehicles. Both aerodynamics and structures are represented using high-fidelity models such as the Euler equations for the aerodynamics and a detailed finite element model for the primary structure. The aerodynamic outer mold line (OML) and a structure of fixed topology are parameterized using a large number of design variables. The aero-structural sensitivities of aerodynamic and structural cost functions with respect to both aerodynamic shape and structural variables are computed using an accurate and efficient coupled-adjoint procedure. K-S functions are used to reduce the number of structural constraints in the problem. Sample optimization results of the aerodynamic shape and structure of a natural laminar flow supersonic business jet are presented together with an assessment of the accuracy of the sensitivity information obtained using this procedure.
