Book excerpt: A unique interpretation key emphasizing the environmental aspects of the petroleum industry was developed as an integral part of an aerial surveillance spill prevention system. The petroleum refinery key is a unique collection of aerial and ground photographs and textual information organized to expedite the location and identification of spill threats through the use of conventional and aerial multiband photographs. The addition of aerial multiband photographs, spill threat analyses, spectral and chemical analyses of spilled materials distinguish this key from standard military interpretation keys. Throughout the aerial spill detection key, the material descriptively related oil refinery features to potential contamination of natural water resources. In addition to serving as a reference manual for imagery interpreters, they key can aid in training imagery interpreters to recognize refinery facilities, equipment, processes and associated spill threats. The key, while prepared for petroleum refineries, can serve as a model for other industries for which imagery interpretation keys are desired.

This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Arctic waters north of the Bering Strait and west of the Canadian border encompass a vast area that is usually ice covered for much of the year, but is increasingly experiencing longer periods and larger areas of open water due to climate change. Sparsely inhabited with a wide variety of ecosystems found nowhere else, this region is vulnerable to damage from human activities. As oil and gas, shipping, and tourism activities increase, the possibilities of an oil spill also increase. How can we best prepare to respond to such an event in this challenging environment? Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment reviews the current state of the science regarding oil spill response and environmental assessment in the Arctic region north of the Bering Strait, with emphasis on the potential impacts in U.S. waters. This report describes the unique ecosystems and environment of the Arctic and makes recommendations to provide an effective response effort in these challenging conditions. According to Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment, a full range of proven oil spill response technologies is needed in order to minimize the impacts on people and sensitive ecosystems. This report identifies key oil spill research priorities, critical data and monitoring needs, mitigation strategies, and important operational and logistical issues. The Arctic acts as an integrating, regulating, and mediating component of the physical, atmospheric and cryospheric systems that govern life on Earth. Not only does the Arctic serve as regulator of many of the Earth's large-scale systems and processes, but it is also an area where choices made have substantial impact on life and choices everywhere on planet Earth. This report's recommendations will assist environmentalists, industry, state and local policymakers, and anyone interested in the future of this special region to preserve and protect it from damaging oil spills.

This book was released on 1972 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acquisition and interpretation of multispectral aerial photography and thermal infrared imagery was performed to evaluate remote sensing applications to oil and other hazardous materials spill prevention surveillance. The San Francisco Bay area was used as a test site, with major sub-areas delineated which contained facilities and activities which might lead to spills of oil and other hazardous substances into waterways. Results demonstrated that high quality, small scale (1/40,000 to 1/60,000) color infrared photography can be used for regional surveillance leading to classification of land use into areas where potential spill sources exist. High quality, large scale (1/5,000 to 1/10,000) color aerial photography can be used for localized delineation of potential spill sources. Recommendations are given for an operational spill surveillance system using multi-scale aerial photography obtained on a 9-inch format. Use of thermal infrared imagery is not indicated at this time.

Download or read book Monitoring of Marine Pollution written by Houma Bachari Fouzia and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-06-05 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the pollutants discharged into the sea are directly or indirectly the result of human activities. Some of these substances are biodegradable, while others are not. This study is devoted to monitoring areas of the environment. Methods assessment is based on monitoring data and an evaluation of the impact of pollution.Surveillance provides a scientific basis for standards development and application. The methodology of marine pollution control is governed by algorithms and models. A monitoring strategy should be put in place, coupled with an environmental assessment concept, through targeted research activities in areas identified at local and regional levels. This concept will make it possible to diagnose the state of "health" of these zones and consequently to correct any anomalies. Monitoring of the marine and coastal environment is based on recent methods and validated after experiments in the field of marine pollution.
