This guidance, updated and presented every 5 years in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), serves as the basis for all federal nutrition policies and nutrition assistance programs, as well as nutrition education programs. Despite the use of the guidelines over the past 30 years, recent challenges prompted Congress to question the process by which food and nutrition guidance is developed. This report assesses the process used to develop the guidelines; it does not evaluate the substance or use of the guidelines. As part of an overall, comprehensive review of the process to update the DGA, this first report seeks to discover how the advisory committee selection process can be improved to provide more transparency, eliminate bias, and include committee members with a range of viewpoints for the purpose of informing the 2020 cycle.

Book excerpt: The seventeenth meeting of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Neglected Tropical Diseases (STAG-NTD) was held at the headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland, on 11–12 October 2023. The theme of the meeting was “Accelerating towards 2030”. The statements and statistics presented in the report may not represent the views, policies and official statistics of the Organization. Through a pre-recorded video, Dr Jérôme Salomon (WHO Assistant Director-General, Universal Health Coverage, Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases) welcomed participants to the meeting. He said that NTDs are one of the most formidable health challenges. They afflict one billion individuals in the most vulnerable populations, miring them in poverty and desolation. This meeting was a key opportunity to steer collective efforts towards transformative solutions and strengthen collaboration among governments, organizations and individuals. The elimination of NTDs underscores the indispensable role of robust and adaptable health systems on the way to universal health coverage. Control of NTDs is about human empowerment, children’s education and people’s participation in their communities. By eliminating NTDs, we foster a legacy of health and optimism, and exemplify the importance of global unity and collective action. Together, we can all catalyse change, ensure a world where nobody needlessly suffers from these afflictions and health is genuinely a universal right.

In the 1970s, unprecedented economic restructuring on a global scale created unexpected setbacks for the middle class. The long era of postwar prosperity ended as the nation's dominant industry shifted from manufacturing to services, competition from foreign producers increased, interest rates rose, and a new emphasis on technology and cost-cutting created a demand for more sophisticated skills in the workplace. The economic recovery of the 1980s generated greater prosperity for the well-educated and highly skilled, and created many low paying jobs, but offered little to remedy the stagnant and declining wages of the middle class. Income inequalitybecame a defining feature in the economic life of America: overall, the rich got richer while the poor and middle class found it increasingly difficult to meet their financial demands. The New American Reality reports some good news about America. Our lives are longer and healthier, the elderly are much better off than ever before, consumer spending power has increased, and minorities and women have many more opportunities. But this book does not shy away from the significant problems facing large portions of the population, and provides a valuable perspective on efforts to remedy them.
