Book excerpt: "Advice to Young Men" is a guidebook for young gentlemen that offers advice on many accepts of life, including monetary matters, relationships, etiquette, attire, fatherhood, and much more. This volume will appeal to those with an interest in early nineteenth-century manners, and it would make for a fantastic addition to collections of allied literature. Contents include: "Letter I. To A Youth", "Letter II. To A Young Man", "Letter III. To A Lover", "Letter IV. To A Husband", "Letter V. To A Father", and "Letter VI. To The Citizen". William Cobbett (1763 - 1835) was an English farmer, pamphleteer, and journalist. He was a staunch believer in parliamentary reform and championed the idea of abolishing "rotten" boroughs to help end the poverty of farm labourers. He was also a keen polemicist, although he is most famous for this book, "Rural Rides". Other notable works by this author include: "Cottage Economy" ( 1822), "The Housekeeper's Magazine and Family Economist" (1826), and "The Poor Man's Friend; or, Essays on the Rights and Duties of the Poor" (1829). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Book excerpt: Writing the Frontier: Anthony Trollope between Britain and Ireland is the first book-length study of the great Victorian novelist's relationship with Ireland, the country which became his second home and was the location of his first personal and professional success. It offers an in-depth exploration of Trollope's time in Ireland as a rising Post Office official, contextualising his considerable output of Irish novels and short stories and his ongoing interest in the country, its people, and its always complicated relationship with Britain. Trollope's Irish novels were long neglected but are vital to any understanding of his entire oeuvre and when given their just place alter our overall view of the writer and his take on the world. Uniquely among his fellow English novelists, Trollope consciously occupied a mediating position, believing he knew Ireland better than any other Englishman and better than most Irishmen and used his novels to represent that Ireland to an English public. Trollope's Irish works constitute a vital and distinct group of works, add significantly to our vision of the writer, change the prevalent view that he is always safe and "English", and represent a rich and underestimated contribution to the canon of the nineteenth century Irish novel tout court, complicating the sometimes arbitrary divisions that are drawn between the English and the Irish traditions.

Book Synopsis New Men in Trollope's Novels by : Margaret Markwick
Download or read book New Men in Trollope's Novels written by Margaret Markwick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Men in Trollope's Novels challenges the popular construction of Victorian men as patriarchal despots and suggests that hands-on fatherhood may have been a nineteenth-century norm. Beginning with an evaluation of the evidence for cultural determinations of masculinity during Trollope's times, the author sets the stage with a discussion of the religious, philosophical, and educational influences that informed the evolution of Trollope's personal views of masculinity as he grew from boyhood into later manhood. Her treatment of his novels, drawing on a wide selection from across the oevre, shows that sensitive examination of Trollope's texts discovers him advancing a startlingly modern model of manhood under a veneer of conformity. Trollope's independent views on child-rearing, education, courtship, marriage, parenthood, and gay men are also discussed within the context of Victorian culture in this witty, original, and immensely knowledgeable study of Victorian masculinity.
