Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lectures forming the main part of this volume were presented at the London School of Economics and Political Science and, collected, purport not to be a working textbook of Advertising, but rather a statement of practical principles. Every opportunity has been taken to illustrate, with examples described from actual practice, the theories propounded. The business of Advertising still suffers from the prejudices created by earlier misconduct. But Advertising has become a necessity: anyone who wants to do business on a large scale must advertise in some way. Commercial Advertising examines how this state of affairs came about, and how businesses conduct their Advertising in the modern age. First published in 1919.

Book Synopsis A Shopkeeper's Millennium by : Paul E. Johnson
Download or read book A Shopkeeper's Millennium written by Paul E. Johnson and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2004-06-21 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quarter-century after its first publication, A Shopkeeper's Millennium remains a landmark work--brilliant both as a new interpretation of the intimate connections among politics, economy, and religion during the Second Great Awakening, and as a surprising portrait of a rapidly growing frontier city. The religious revival that transformed America in the 1820s, making it the most militantly Protestant nation on earth and spawning reform movements dedicated to temperance and to the abolition of slavery, had an especially powerful effect in Rochester, New York. Paul E. Johnson explores the reasons for the revival's spectacular success there, suggesting important links between its moral accounting and the city's new industrial world. In a new preface, he reassesses his evidence and his conclusions in this major work.

Download or read book Store Wars written by David Monod and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decidedly unromantic vision of the Canadian shop keeper in the 1930s paints a portrait of the Petite Bourgeoisie as publicly resistant to modernity while at the same time adapting to it. Monod (history, Wilfrid Laurier) documents how shopkeepers modernized, improved accounting practices, developed relationships with suppliers and began to depend on manufacturers to promote products. This adaptation to survive also had its effect on lower middle class politics (which he describes as generally xenophobic), particularly in terms of trade practice, and adds to the debates regarding the unity of the class as a whole. Book Synopsis Crime, Gender and Consumer Culture in Nineteenth-Century England by : Tammy C. Whitlock
Download or read book Crime, Gender and Consumer Culture in Nineteenth-Century England written by Tammy C. Whitlock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst the actual origins of English consumer culture are a source of much debate, it is clear that the nineteenth century witnessed a revolution in retailing and consumption. Mass production of goods, improved transport facilities and more sophisticated sales techniques brought consumerism to the masses on a scale previously unimaginable. Yet with this new consumerism came new problems and challenges. Focusing on retailing in nineteenth-century Britain, this book traces the expansion of commodity culture and a mass consumer orientated market, and explores the wider social and cultural implications this had for society. Using trial records, advertisements, newspaper reports, literature, and popular ballads, it analyses the rise, criticism, and entrenchment of consumerism by looking at retail changes around the period 1800-1880 and society's responses to them. By viewing this in the context of what had gone before Professor Whitlock emphasizes the key role women played in this evolution, and argues that the dazzling new world of consumption had beginnings that predate the later English, French and American department store cultures. It also challenges the view that women were helpless consumers manipulated by merchants' use of colour, light and display into excessive purchases, or even driven by their desires into acts of theft. With its interdisciplinary approach drawing on social and economic history, gender studies, cultural studies and the history of crime, this study asks fascinating questions regarding the nature of consumer culture and how society reacts to the challenges this creates.
