Book excerpt: There is much research surrounding adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the relationship of how these experiences affect the lives of youth and their development into adulthood. Mental health, criminality, substance use and decreased life expectancy are a few outcomes that have been shown to be present with those who experienced ACEs. If we understand what is needed to help aid youth in fostering resilience and healing, we can possibly try to prevent these lifelong adverse effects into adulthood. The purpose of this investigation was to understand the experiences of adverse childhood events, and resilience among adults with histories of mental illness, substance abuse, and criminal justice involvement and gather suggestions from these individuals for youth today. Qualitative interviews were done with 7 adults with a history of adverse childhood experiences. All had histories of mental illness, substance abuse and incarceration. Themes from the interviews mapped onto Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Participants reflected on ways in which these needs were not met for them during childhood and adolescence. They provided suggestions for youth today which mapped onto ways youth can meet the top-level needs, towards esteem and self-actualization.
