Book excerpt: This book creates (on the one hand) and explores (on the other hand) philosophies of African development suitable for Black sub-Saharan African countries. As an academic discipline focused on thought informed by indigenous moral values among Black peoples in the sub-Saharan region, African political philosophy involves philosophizing normatively about government by traditional Black African people with the aim of advancing a better African society. African political philosophy does not mean that its themes, views, concepts, and approaches are exclusively African. It also does not mean that only thinkers in Africa could hold these concepts, nor does it mean that all African thinkers hold the same views. “African” is used geographically in African political philosophy to demarcate certain perspectives that are unique to sub-Saharan African thought and practice that tend not to be the case elsewhere. An African political and economic philosophy should address the origin and method of political power, the guarantee of human and civil liberties, and how economic goods are generated and distributed in African societies. Africapitalism, as a new economic philosophy, obviates the inadequacies in Afrisocialism and offers an option for an African economic philosophy. Edited by Ephraim-Stephen Essien and Frank Aragbonfoh Abumere, the contributors to African Political and Economic Philosophy with Africapitalism: Concepts for African Leadership ask the question: can a neo-Afrisocialism offer anything good for the Africa?

Book excerpt: This book examines the political and economic philosophy of Chief Jeremiah Oyeniyi Obafemi Awolowo and his concepts of democratic socialism (Liberal Democratic Socialism). It studies how Chief Awolowo and his political parties, first the Action Group (AG) 1951-1966 and later the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) 1978-1983, acted in various Nigerian political settings. Chief Awolowo was a principled man, who by a Spartan self-discipline and understanding of himself, his accomplishments, failures and successes, was a fearless leader. He has set an example of leadership for a new generation of Nigerian politicians. He was not only a brilliant politician, but a highly cerebral thinker, statesman, dedicated manager, brilliant political economist, a Social Democrat, and a committed federalist. From all accounts, Chief Awolowo knew the worst and the best, laughter and sorrow, vilification and veneration, tribulations and triumphs, poverty and prosperity, failures and successes in life.

Book excerpt: This book attempts to correct the impression created by Western media that Sub-Saharan Africa is in a state of anarchy. The text analyzes and shows that while many Sub-Saharan African nations are experiencing the worst time of their history, others are enjoying their best times. Thus, the text argues that although some parts of Africa are experiencing crisis, the continent is also a fine region of major new experiments in governance, peace building and free market transformation programs. Finally, the text focuses some of its analyses on the colonial legacy, economic and ethnic transformation, indigenous institutions and other forces that seem to influence the governance of Sub-Saharan African nations.

Book excerpt: Fairly, Fully, Fatally Corrupt: Epochal Dimensions to Governance abd Corruption in Nigeria, also known as F 3 Corrupt, is a carefully analyxed input to the already flourishing genre of anti-corruption literature in Nigeria. F3 Corrupt focuses on Nigeria's governance because of the conviction of the author that the three levels of incidental, institutional and systemic corruption prevalent in contemporary Nigeria, is fuelled, propelled and sustained through corruption in Nigeria's governance. The volume seeks to set the records straight on how governance in Nigeria progressively deteriorated from fairly corrupt, to full-blown corruption and now to fatal corruption in contemporary times, making corruption to arguably become the most dominant phenomenon in today;s Nigeria. Book excerpt: Since its emergence in 1960 as an independent state, Nigeria has stood out as the most populous Black country in the world. In Africa’s International Relations in a Globalising World: Perspectives on Nigerian Foreign Policy at Sixty and Beyond, edited by Usman A. Tar and Sharkdam Wapmuk, contributors examine Nigeria’s role within Africa, as well as internationally. This book shows how Nigeria has used the platforms of international organisations to advance its interests while fulfilling its regional and global obligations. The contributors address areas such as Nigeria’s economic development and policies, Nigeria’s relationship with other countries, and the urgent challenge of countering terrorism in the context of ensuring sustainable development. The COVID-19 pandemic brought to the fore the need for strong global relations and reminded humanity of the importance of multilateral solutions to global problems such as health. The editors and contributors address essential questions such as how well has Nigerian foreign policy and its practice of diplomacy served national interest, and what more needs to be done to assure of better results now and into the future.
