The Fife dialect - which I have done my best to reproduce in reporting Purdie's phrases and narratives is the broadest in "braid Scotland." While the Aberdonian speaks about beets and sheen, meesic and breets, the Fifeshireman comes out with a great mouthful, and gives you butes and shune, music and brutes - the u sounding like the German oe, as in Goethe.
