Book excerpt: This is book two of the Happiness story. It begins with Dianne's thoughts of going back to the island with a feeling of dread. She remembers the family history, all the problems that beset the family. The elderly couple decided to spend the winter on the island. They would be completely isolated during winter freeze up, again during spring break up. It would be necessary to cut six bush cords of firewood. How were they to get water from the frozen lake? November 23rd, the change-over from boat to snowmobile. The long wait for the ice to freeze. On December 30th they finally made it to Mactier, crossing three lakes and miles of bush trail. Dianne and Vincent were making regular trips to town, by snowmachine, pulling a sleigh for necessities. "Another fun trip to town " They seldom got out without several dives into deep snow, or running off the obscure trail. One day after a trip to Gravenhurst, pulling a heavy sleigh home with a load of propane, gasoline and food, Vincent ran off the trail on Duffy Lake. They were buried in 16" of slush. Dianne almost panicked, remembering previous, similar ordeals. They had to dig away the slush. Getting the machine started, revving the engine, the belt threw out a cloud of slush. Dianne driving, Vincent pulling, the machine jumped up on the hard trail. They returned to their cottage home before dark. Spring finally came. The ducks, loons, robins, cormorants came home. Beavers welcomed the arrival of spring. On Easter Sunday, April 20th they watched the phenomenon of the ice leaving. It was the most unusual experience of their lives. They were isolated again for a period to be decided by mother nature.

Book excerpt: What begins as a training run with sled dogs turns into a race against time for Tatum and her new friend, a Siberian Yupik boy named Cole. When a freak blizzard hits this remote island off the coast of Alaska, the duo seeks shelter overnight in a dilapidated hunting cabin. Their harrowing ordeal goes from bad to worse when wind-driven snow forces them to risk an alternate route. Stranded in the untamed wilderness, they must rely on each other—as well as their faithful huskies—to survive sub-zero temperatures and bone-numbing exhaustion. Worse still, their food supply is dangerously low. The most daunting decision comes when the strongest dog runs away. One person must go for help, while one must stay behind. Either way, they'll both be alone in the wild for an uncertain amount of time.

Book excerpt: A geographer with extensive research experience in the Canadian North, Jack D. Ives has written a lively and informative account of several expeditions to Baffin Island during the "golden age" of federal research. In the 1960s, scientists from the Geographical Branch of Canada's Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources travelled to Baffin to study glacial geomorphology and glaciology. Their fieldwork resulted in vastly increased knowledge of the Far North-from its ice caps and glaciers to its lichens and microfossils. Drawing from the recollections of his Baffin colleagues as well as from his own memories, Ives takes readers on a remarkable adventure, describing the day-to-day experiences of the field teams in the context of both contemporary Arctic research and bureaucratic decision making. Along the way, his narrative illustrates the role played by the Cold War-era Distant Early Warning Line and other northern infrastructure, the crucial importance of his pioneering aerial photography, the unpredictable nature of planes, helicopters, and radios in Arctic regions, and of course, the vast and breathtaking scenery of the North. Baffin Island encompasses both field research and High Arctic adventure. The research trips to Baffin between 1961 and 1967 also served as a vital training ground in polar studies for university students; further, they represented a breakthrough in gender equality in government-sponsored science, thanks to the author's persistence in having women permitted on the teams. The book contains a special section detailing the subsequent professional achievements of the many researchers involved (in addition to the later career moves of Ives himself) and a chapter that delves deeper into the science behind their fieldwork in the North. Readers need not be versed in glaciology, however. Ives has produced a highly readable book that seamlessly combines research and adventure.

The story unfolds by introducing us to a character named John Buzzby, who is described by the author as "Wherever he happened to be (and in the course of his adventurous life he had been to nearly all parts of the known world) he was the first awake in the morning and the last asleep at night; he always answered promptly to the first call; and was never known by any man living to have been seen with his eyes shut, except when he winked, and that operation he performed less frequently than other men."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dead of an Arctic winter. Whaling ships full of men, stranded in ice. Follow three rescuers in a race against time — and all odds — in this heartpounding true adventure. In 1897, whaling in the Arctic waters off Alaska’s coast was as dangerous as it was lucrative. And in that particular year, winter blasted early, bringing storms and ice packs that caught eight American whale ships and three hundred sailors off guard. Their ships locked in ice, with no means of escape, the whalers had limited provisions on board, and little hope of surviving until warmer temperatures arrived many months later. Here is the incredible story of three men sent by President McKinley to rescue them. The mission? A perilous trek over 1,500 miles of nearly impassable Alaskan terrain, in the bone-chilling months of winter, to secure two herds of reindeer (for food) and find a way to guide them to the whalers before they starve. With the help of photographs and journal entries by one of the rescuers, Martin W. Sandler takes us on every step of their riveting journey, facing raging blizzards, killing cold, injured sled dogs, and setbacks to test the strongest of wills. Back matter includes an epilogue, further information, a time line, source notes, a bibliography, and an index.
