This paper describes the benefits and drawbacks of gestural input and presents interaction techniques that address these drawbacks. Gestures provide the user with a new form of interaction that mirrors their experience in the real world. They feel natural and require neither interruption nor an additional device. Furthermore, they do not limit the user to a single point of input, but instead offer various forms of interaction. However, gestures also raise issues that are not relevant with traditional methods of input. The need to be learned and remembered, which requires the development of guides that promote the discoverability and memorability of these gestures and deal with input and recognition errors. Another aspect is the design of the gestures itself, which should make them memorable and easy and comfortable to execute.

Inspired by the observations made in the VisionWand and similar gesture-based interaction systems that different users have different habits in making gestures and performing tasks, we developed the adaptive gesture interface as a framework that exploits machine learning techniques to capture and utilize the users' habits on line. This framework improved the system's performance of gesture recognition, and alleviated the user's need for practice. We present a rigorous user experiment to demonstrate this improvement.

The primary goal of HCI is to create a seamless, effective interaction experience. For the past decades, HCI has evolved from Command Line Interaction (CLI) to Graphical User Interface (GUI). Recently, however, Natural User Interface (NUI) technologies have been introduced and there has been a movement to evolve toward these technologies. NUI allows users to interact with the computer in natural ways. Examples of NUI include using gestures or voice commands. One challenge that exists is the method in which a person can control computing devices effectively with NUI. The goal of this thesis is to design and implement a system to evaluate the performance of NUI solutions and compare it with that of CLI and GUI solutions. The focal point of this thesis creates a system that allows users to interact with and control different features of computing devices by using hand gestures. The underlying technologies of the implemented gesture-based solutions include Kinect and LeapMotion. A group of testers were asked to use this system with the goal of controlling computers and video games using NUI devices. The same group of testers were then asked to control computers and video games using a mouse. The response time and accuracy of operations using the two interaction methods were compared against each other. Our study shows that users can operate NUI with better ease and efficiency than the compared alternative mouse solution. We found that users who play a game yield 4% higher score while using gesture-based interaction with Kinect than with the mouse. Additionally, users who have minimal computing device knowledge score much better with the NUI devices than with a mouse. This study further illustrates the benefits of LeapMotion and Kinect gesture-based interaction solutions when compared to GUI-based interaction solutions. It is important to also note that mouse interaction methods enable certain tasks to be completed with higher precision.

These objects require new approaches to interaction design, referred to as post-WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus, and Pointer) or as embodied interaction design. This book provides an overview of the design opportunities and issues associated with two embodied interaction modalities that allow us to leave the traditional keyboard behind: tangible and gesture interaction. We explore the issues in designing for this new age of interaction by highlighting the significance and contexts for these modalities. We explore the design of tangible interaction with a reconceptualization of the traditional keyboard as a Tangible Keyboard, and the design of interactive three-dimensional (3D) models as Tangible Models. We explore the design of gesture interaction through the design of gesture-base commands for a walk-up-and-use information display, and through the design of a gesture-based dialogue for the willful marionette. We conclude with design principles for tangible and gesture interaction and a call for research on the cognitive effects of these modalities.

Book excerpt: In its early years, the field of computer vision was largely motivated by researchers seeking computational models of biological vision and solutions to practical problems in manufacturing, defense, and medicine. For the past two decades or so, there has been an increasing interest in computer vision as an input modality in the context of human-computer interaction. Such vision-based interaction can endow interactive systems with visual capabilities similar to those important to human-human interaction, in order to perceive non-verbal cues and incorporate this information in applications such as interactive gaming, visualization, art installations, intelligent agent interaction, and various kinds of command and control tasks. Enabling this kind of rich, visual and multimodal interaction requires interactive-time solutions to problems such as detecting and recognizing faces and facial expressions, determining a person's direction of gaze and focus of attention, tracking movement of the body, and recognizing various kinds of gestures. In building technologies for vision-based interaction, there are choices to be made as to the range of possible sensors employed (e.g., single camera, stereo rig, depth camera), the precision and granularity of the desired outputs, the mobility of the solution, usability issues, etc. Practical considerations dictate that there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to the variety of interaction scenarios; however, there are principles and methodological approaches common to a wide range of problems in the domain. While new sensors such as the Microsoft Kinect are having a major influence on the research and practice of vision-based interaction in various settings, they are just a starting point for continued progress in the area. In this book, we discuss the landscape of history, opportunities, and challenges in this area of vision-based interaction; we review the state-of-the-art and seminal works in detecting and recognizing the human body and its components; we explore both static and dynamic approaches to "looking at people" vision problems; and we place the computer vision work in the context of other modalities and multimodal applications. Readers should gain a thorough understanding of current and future possibilities of computer vision technologies in the context of human-computer interaction.
