This book was released on 2011-08-04 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of connecting astrophysical theory, observations, simulations and laboratory astrophysics is nowadays widely appreciated by the scientific community. IAU Symposium 274 discusses recent observational, theoretical and experimental efforts in understanding the basic plasma processes in the Universe at all scales, from the primordial plasmas of the early Universe to stellar and laboratory plasmas. Experts from different fields examine topics including: the origin and dynamics of magnetic fields in astrophysical systems (the dynamo problem); the origin of x-ray emitting coronas and the role of magnetic reconnection; the acceleration of charged particles; winds and jets from highly-evolved stars and supernova remnants; plasma radiation processes; turbulence of the magnetized plasma in astrophysical objects and in the ISM, IGM and the solar wind; quantum plasmas under extreme conditions in planetary interiors and in exotic stars; and many other key problems in modern plasma astrophysics.

Book Synopsis History of the IAU by : Adriaan Blaauw
Download or read book History of the IAU written by Adriaan Blaauw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This History has its origin in a suggestion, made in September 1990 by former IAU General Secretary Derek McNally, who felt "that a 75 year history of the Union was needed before the col lective memory of those who knew the Union before the Second World War vanished. It would then be a preparatory volume to a centennial history in 2019. " Indeed, of those who knew the Union that long ago, few are still with us. Six years ago, at Baltimore on August 2, 1988, listening and reminiscing at the Inaugural Ceremonies of the Union's 20th General Assembly, I realized that it was almost exactly half a century ago that, at the age of 24, I attended the Inaugurations at my "first" Assembly: on August 3, 1938 in Stockholm. Now, in 1994, this is almost 56 years ago, three quarters of the Union's age. Only vague recollections - no better than that -lead me back to this event, just before World War II. And so, this is not a history based on recollection, far from it. Recollection was helpful in that it allowed me, better perhaps than a younger author, to appreciate circumstances under which the letters and reports which form the basis for this History were written. The account is largely based on archival documents, collected from a wide variety of sources.

Book Synopsis The International Astronomical Union by : Johannes Andersen
Download or read book The International Astronomical Union written by Johannes Andersen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Astronomical Union (IAU) was founded in 1919, in the wake of the First World War, together with its sister Unions in related natural sciences. It will thus turn 100 years in 2019. Written by a mixed team of insiders and outsiders, this book presents the IAU in the changing context of the historical, scientific and technological development of astronomy during the past 100 years. While much important scientific progress took place already before 1945, the book naturally focuses on the accelerating evolution during the second half of the century. In the past few decades, the previously narrow IAU focus on organising professional astronomy has broadened to include societally relevant activities such as addressing the hazard of asteroid impacts, the planetary status of Pluto in the Solar System, and the hugely successful International Year of Astronomy. Most recently, it is spearheading a combination of science literacy and public outreach. The book will be of interest to professional astronomers as well as an astronomically interested general audience. The book features live personal interviews with as many of the key actors as still possible.
Book Synopsis The Galaxy Disk in Cosmological Context (IAU S254) by : International Astronomical Union. Symposium
Download or read book The Galaxy Disk in Cosmological Context (IAU S254) written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-16 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paradigm of a dark energy- and dark matter-dominated Universe, with the hierarchical merger scenario for the formation of galaxies, has scored impressive successes in matching the observed Universe. However, the theory fails to explain the difficulty in generating ordinary disk galaxies such as the Milky Way, suggesting that some important physics must be missing in current models. IAU Symposium 254 was organized to address this question, gathering researchers from an unusually broad range of fields, from cosmology to interstellar matter, and the formation and evolution of stars. High-class reviews, lectures and posters combine to define the frontiers in the field and point the way to new avenues of research. This volume presents a unique set of succinct overviews illuminating the full range of topics in this very active field. It also honors Danish astrophysicist Bengt Strömgren (1908-1987), who laid much of the foundation for this entire field.

Book Synopsis Markov Point Processes And Their Applications by : Marie-colette Van Lieshout
Download or read book Markov Point Processes And Their Applications written by Marie-colette Van Lieshout and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-07-12 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days, an increasing amount of information can be obtained in graphical forms, such as weather maps, soil samples, locations of nests in a breeding colony, microscopical slices, satellite images, radar or medical scans and X-ray techniques. “High level” image analysis is concerned with the global interpretation of images, attempting to reduce it to a compact description of the salient features of the scene. This book takes a stochastic approach. It studies Markov object processes, showing that they form a flexible class of models for a range of problems involving the interpretation of spatial data. Applications can be found in statistical physics (under the name of “Gibbs processes”), environmental mapping of diseases, forestry, identification of ore structure in materials science, signal analysis, object recognition, robot vision, and interpretation of images from medical scans or confocal microscopy.

Book Synopsis Spatial Statistics and Modeling by : Carlo Gaetan
Download or read book Spatial Statistics and Modeling written by Carlo Gaetan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-10 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatial statistics are useful in subjects as diverse as climatology, ecology, economics, environmental and earth sciences, epidemiology, image analysis and more. This book covers the best-known spatial models for three types of spatial data: geostatistical data (stationarity, intrinsic models, variograms, spatial regression and space-time models), areal data (Gibbs-Markov fields and spatial auto-regression) and point pattern data (Poisson, Cox, Gibbs and Markov point processes). The level is relatively advanced, and the presentation concise but complete. The most important statistical methods and their asymptotic properties are described, including estimation in geostatistics, autocorrelation and second-order statistics, maximum likelihood methods, approximate inference using the pseudo-likelihood or Monte-Carlo simulations, statistics for point processes and Bayesian hierarchical models. A chapter is devoted to Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation (Gibbs sampler, Metropolis-Hastings algorithms and exact simulation). A large number of real examples are studied with R, and each chapter ends with a set of theoretical and applied exercises. While a foundation in probability and mathematical statistics is assumed, three appendices introduce some necessary background. The book is accessible to senior undergraduate students with a solid math background and Ph.D. students in statistics. Furthermore, experienced statisticians and researchers in the above-mentioned fields will find the book valuable as a mathematically sound reference. This book is the English translation of Modélisation et Statistique Spatiales published by Springer in the series Mathématiques & Applications, a series established by Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI).
