Book excerpt: Nowadays, microporous and mesoporous materials are versatile solids of great interest due to their structures and pore sizes, which allow their application in many areas. Accordingly, with IUPAC, materials with pore sizes smaller than 2 nm are called microporous and with pore sizes between 2 and 50 nm are called mesoporous. The pore size has an important impact on the material properties and affects their applications. In addition, high surface area, and their ability to incorporate functional groups on the framework are of great relevance for commercial and science applications. This book intends to provide readers with a comprehensive overview of recent improvements in the microporous and mesoporous materials field.

There is much interest in the general subject of porous inorganic materials with respect to their use as sorbents or catalysts. Such inorganic solids may be microporous, mesoporous or macroporous according to the sizes of the pores within the solid. Often there is a range of pore sizes within any given solid and so there is special interest in the synthesis, characterisation and application of porous inorganic solids with well defined pores. Pores of diameter larger than 50 nm are generally termed macropores. Those with diameters of less than 2 nm are micropores and pores of intermediate size are called mesopores. Solids, which contain only mesopores, are correctly called mesoporous but very often there is a combination of different types of porosities within one given solid. The synthesis, characterisation and application of microporous solids is much more advanced than is the case with mesoporous substances. Moreover, the synthesis of crystalline mesoporous materials is one clear goal for the future but which has not been attained so far. Consequently, it is of interest to examine the current state of our knowledge of microporous materials and to examine how this may apply to mesoporous materials. Both catalytic and sorption processes could benefit from studies of mesoporous solids because the mesopores could permit diffusion of larger reactants or products than is the case in microporous materials. 2.

Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the rapidly growing field of microporous ceramic membranes with separating layers of pore diameter less than 2nm. The chapters of this book bring forward a wide range of issues, namely fundamentals of complex sorption and transport processes in micropore structures, highly innovative methods of preparation of microporous membranes and examples of their possible commercial applications. This book presents insights by distinguished investigators, who have contributed significantly to the advance of research efforts in the diverse topics described herein. Recently, significant progress has been made with respect to the development of novel microporous asymmetric membranes, mainly involving modification by means of deposition of additional material within the pores of the substrates. Most state-of-the-art technologies aiming in the development of microporous ceramic membrane are presented in the third section of the book. These include several material deposition methods and techniques on macroporous or mesoporous supports and substrates from the liquid or vapour phase, namely those involving sol-gel, zeolite and chemical vapour deposition techniques. In addition to the above-mentioned methods, the classical technique of carbonizing polymeric deposits along with one of the novel techniques of plasma-treating, organically deposited Langmuir-Blodgett films, are also presented. Nanophase mixed ionic-electron membranes for enhanced oxygen transport are described, which pose a strong candidacy for a number of significant commercial applications.
