Volume 42 first evaluates the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of poly(1,1-difluoroethylene) or poly(vinylidene fluoride) and some of its copolymers and composites. The quantitative study of the p-type doping of a-Si:H thin films carried out by combining in situ Kelvin probe and UV-visible spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements is explored. The authors go on to discuss how graphene-based materials have shown great usefulness because they can be chemically combined with other materials to obtain new interesting materials with new chemical and physical propertiesIn the subsequent study, electron transport properties of proposed field-effect transistors constructed by some low-dimensional nanomaterials are reported by the density functional theory simulation combined with a non-equilibrium Green function method.Following this, the methods used to synthesize structured catalytic supports by coating in spherical geometry are reviewed in conjunction with other coating methods on spheres with applications in photocatalysis.Additionally, a power storage system using spherical silicon solar cells, a maximum power point tracking charge controller, a lithium-ion battery and a direct current-alternating current inverter using silicon carbide devices is constructed and studied. The electrochemical behaviour of 316L stainless steel in the hypochlorite sodium bleaching process is also studied and findings are described. In the concluding study, on the basis of the the strain-rate cycling tests associated with the ultrasonic oscillation, p p was obtained as the effective stress due to the impurities which lie on the mobile dislocation.

It encompasses four classes of materials, the study of each of which may be considered a separate field: metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Materials science is often referred to as materials science and engineering because it has many applications. This volume gathers important research from around the globe in this dynamic field including the mechanisms of structural and phase evolution of metals and alloys; new trends in superconductivity research; and the corrosion resistance of strain hardening fibre reinforced cementitious composites.

Book excerpt: This Handbook is the first to explore the extensive applications made with bioplastics & biocomposites for the packaging, automotive, biomedical, and construction industries. Bioplastics and biocomposites are becoming increasingly prominent because synthetic plastics and glass fiber composites are neither sustainable nor environmentally friendly. The Handbook of Bioplastics and Biocomposites Engineering Applications brings together scientists from academia and industry to report on current research and applications in the bioplastics and biocomposites arena. This new science is interdisciplinary and integrates pure and applied sciences such as chemistry, engineering and materials science. The Handbook focuses on five main categories of applications: Packaging; Civil Engineering; Biomedical; Automotive; General Engineering. The majority of the chapters review the properties, processing, characterization, synthesis and applications of the bio-based and biodegradable polymers and composites including: Polymers such as polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), guar gum based plastics, cellulose polyesters, starch based bioplastics, vegetable oil derived bioplastics, biopolyethylene, chitosan, etc. Thermoplastic and thermosetting bioplastics and biocomposites with a focus on the automobile industry. The ways how to improve the properties of bioplastics, polymer blends, and biocomposites by combining them with both synthetic and natural fillers and reinforcements such as nanoclays, nanotubes (CNTs), and natural fibers (both wood and plant fibers). Studies that expand the boundaries of bioplastics that will allow for the new materials to be applied to most generic engineering applications. The Handbook will be of central interest to engineers, scientists and researchers who are working in the fields of bioplastics, biocomposites, biomaterials for biomedical engineering, biochemistry, and materials science. The book will also be of great importance to engineers in many industries including automotive, biomedical, construction, and food packaging.

Book excerpt: DEVELOPMENT OF GEOPOLYMER FROM POND ASH-THERMAL POWERPLANT WASTE Explains how geopolymer technologies using industrial waste obtained from thermal power plants become cementitious materials in construction sectors for civil engineers. Utilization of waste materials has become a global challenge since they endanger our environment. In this book, the authors demonstrate how to utilize fly ash/pond ash (waste materials from thermal power plants) to produce a novel material called ‘Geopolymer’ (GP). Red mud, slags, etc., are mixed with fly ash to produce GP with enhanced strength. As shown in a few European countries, GP can replace cement, and some permanent structures constructed with GP are now appearing in a few advanced countries. GP, and geopolymer concrete, is considered suitable for the construction of roads, buildings, etc., and will eventually, fully or partially, replace cement. The book highlights the mechanism of the formation of GP from pond ash. Properties of structures made with GP concrete are found to be comparable to those made with cement concrete. Systematic investigations are presented to understand the chemistry of GP formation with pond ash materials. Performances of these materials above ambient temperature, as well as with different environmental conditions, are also evaluated.
