Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compact monograph is focused on disturbance attenuation in nonsmooth dynamic systems, developing an H∞ approach in the nonsmooth setting. Similar to the standard nonlinear H∞ approach, the proposed nonsmooth design guarantees both the internal asymptotic stability of a nominal closed-loop system and the dissipativity inequality, which states that the size of an error signal is uniformly bounded with respect to the worst-case size of an external disturbance signal. This guarantee is achieved by constructing an energy or storage function that satisfies the dissipativity inequality and is then utilized as a Lyapunov function to ensure the internal stability requirements. Advanced H∞ Control is unique in the literature for its treatment of disturbance attenuation in nonsmooth systems. It synthesizes various tools, including Hamilton–Jacobi–Isaacs partial differential inequalities as well as Linear Matrix Inequalities. Along with the finite-dimensional treatment, the synthesis is extended to infinite-dimensional setting, involving time-delay and distributed parameter systems. To help illustrate this synthesis, the book focuses on electromechanical applications with nonsmooth phenomena caused by dry friction, backlash, and sampled-data measurements. Special attention is devoted to implementation issues. Requiring familiarity with nonlinear systems theory, this book will be accessible to g raduate students interested in systems analysis and design, and is a welcome addition to the literature for researchers and practitioners in these areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in H∞ Control Theory is concerned with state-of-the-art developments in three areas: the extended treatment of mostly deterministic switched systems with dwell-time; the control of retarded stochastic state-multiplicative noisy systems; and a new approach to the control of biochemical systems, exemplified by the threonine synthesis and glycolytic pathways. Following an introduction and extensive literature survey, each of these major topics is the subject of an individual part of the book. The first two parts of the book contain several practical examples taken from various fields of control engineering including aircraft control, robot manipulation and process control. These examples are taken from the fields of deterministic switched systems and state-multiplicative noisy systems. The text is rounded out with short appendices covering mathematical fundamentals: σ-algebra and the input-output method for retarded systems. Advances in H∞ Control Theory is written for engineers engaged in control systems research and development, for applied mathematicians interested in systems and control and for graduate students specializing in stochastic control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the text of the plenary lectures and the mini-courses of the European Control Conference (ECC'93) held in Groningen, the Netherlands, June 2S-July 1, 1993. However, the book is not your usu al conference proceedings. Instead, the authors took this occasion to take a broad overview of the field of control and discuss its development both from a theoretical as well as from an engineering perpective. The first essay is by the key-note speaker ofthe conference, A.G.J. Mac Farlane. It consists of a non-technical discussion of information processing and knowledge acquisition as the key features of control engineering tech nology. The next six articles are accounts of the plenary addresses. The contribution by R.W. Brockett concerns a mathematical framework for modelling motion control, a central question in robotics and vision. In the paper by M. Morari the engineering and the economic relevance of chemical process control are considered, in particular statistical quality control and the control of systems with constraints. The article by A.C.P.M. Backx is written from an industrial perspec tive. The author is director of an engineering consulting firm involved in the design of industrial control equipment. Specifically, the possibility of obtaining high performance and reliable controllers by modelling, identifi cation, and optimizing industrial processes is discussed.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the principle theories and applications of control and filtering problems to address emerging hot topics in feedback systems. With the development of IT technology at the core of the 4th industrial revolution, dynamic systems are becoming more sophisticated, networked, and advanced to achieve even better performance. However, this evolutionary advance in dynamic systems also leads to unavoidable constraints. In particular, such elements in control systems involve uncertainties, communication/transmission delays, external noise, sensor faults and failures, data packet dropouts, sampling and quantization errors, and switching phenomena, which have serious effects on the system’s stability and performance. This book discusses how to deal with such constraints to guarantee the system’s design objectives, focusing on real-world dynamical systems such as Markovian jump systems, networked control systems, neural networks, and complex networks, which have recently excited considerable attention. It also provides a number of practical examples to show the applicability of the presented methods and techniques. This book is of interest to graduate students, researchers and professors, as well as R&D engineers involved in control theory and applications looking to analyze dynamical systems with constraints and to synthesize various types of corresponding controllers and filters for optimal performance of feedback systems.

Book excerpt: A compendium of the authors’ recently published results, this book discusses sliding mode control of uncertain nonlinear systems, with a particular emphasis on advanced and optimization based algorithms. The authors survey classical sliding mode control theory and introduce four new methods of advanced sliding mode control. They analyze classical theory and advanced algorithms, with numerical results complementing the theoretical treatment. Case studies examine applications of the algorithms to complex robotics and power grid problems. Advanced and Optimization Based Sliding Mode Control: Theory and Applications is the first book to systematize the theory of optimization based higher order sliding mode control and illustrate advanced algorithms and their applications to real problems. It presents systematic treatment of event-triggered and model based event-triggered sliding mode control schemes, including schemes in combination with model predictive control, and presents adaptive algorithms as well as algorithms capable of dealing with state and input constraints. Additionally, the book includes simulations and experimental results obtained by applying the presented control strategies to real complex systems. This book is suitable for students and researchers interested in control theory. It will also be attractive to practitioners interested in implementing the illustrated strategies. It is accessible to anyone with a basic knowledge of control engineering, process physics, and applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: The authors present a study of the H-infinity control problem and related topics for descriptor systems, described by a set of nonlinear differential-algebraic equations. They derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a controller solving the standard nonlinear H-infinity control problem considering both state and output feedback. One such condition for the output feedback control problem to be solvable is obtained in terms of Hamilton–Jacobi inequalities and a weak coupling condition; a parameterization of output feedback controllers solving the problem is also provided. All of these results are then specialized to the linear case. The derivation of state-space formulae for all controllers solving the standard H-infinity control problem for descriptor systems is proposed. Among other important topics covered are balanced realization, reduced-order controller design and mixed H2/H-infinity control. "H-infinity Control for Nonlinear Descriptor Systems" provides a comprehensive introduction and easy access to advanced topics.
