Book excerpt: This volume of Applied Mechanics and Materials contains the papers presented at the joint 2011 Annual British Society for Strain Measurement Conference and the 2011 Fall Society for Experimental Mechanics Conference. This is the first time that the two societies have held their conferences together. However, it is the sixth time that the papers from an Annual British Society for Strain Measurement Conference have been published as a collection in a volume of Applied Mechanics and Materials. Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). The 82 papers in this volume reflect the diverse nature of Experimental Mechanics, with the emphasis placed on Integrating Simulation and Experimentation for Validation. The papers come from both academia and industry, with more than half of the contributions originating from outside the UK; thus indicating the international flavour of this event.

Review from Book News Inc.: For the first time, the international experimental mechanics conference was held in conjunction with the Annual British Society for Strain Measurement Conference. The 82 papers demonstrate the diverse nature of experimental mechanics, emphasizing the integration of simulation and experimentation for validation. The keynote lectures cover what optical metrology can do for experimental mechanics, applying three-dimensional traction forces microscopy to the mechano-transduction of cell clusters, and measuring thermo-mechanical coupling and its application in stress and damage analysis. Other areas covered include the validation of dynamic events, fracture mechanics, digital image correlation, measurement innovations, vibration analysis, thermal deformation, and thermo-mechanics. Book excerpt: The importance of contact and surface problems in modern engineering and their combined effects has led to the Eighth International Conference on Computer Methods and Experimental Measurements for Surface and Contact Mechanics. Nowadays the importance of contact and surface problems in many technological fields is well understood: they are complex and inherently non-linear due to their moving boundaries and the different properties of materials, particularly along the contact surfaces. Structural components fail from wear, corrosion, high cycle fatigue etc., that is to say affected and initiated by the surface conditions. The use of surface treatments can reduce the cost of components and extend the life of the elements. Their effect is of particular importance in the case of surfaces undergoing contact, a problem which is addressed throughout the book. Topics featured: Surface Treatment; Surface problems in Contact Mechanics; Fracture Mechanics; Coupled analysis and experiments; Thin Coatings; Thick Coatings; Contact Mechanics; Material Surface in Contact; Applications and Case Studies.

Book excerpt: The request to organize under its patronage at Poitiers in 1998 a Symposium entitled “Advanced Optical Methods and Applications in Solid Mechanics” by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (I.U.T.A.M.) was well received for the following two reasons. First, for nearly 20 years no Symposium devoted to optical methods in solids had been organized. Second, recent advances in digital image processing provided many new applications which are described in the following. We have the honour to present here the proceedings of this Symposium. st th The Symposium took place from august 31 to September 4 at the Institut International de la Prospective in Futuroscope near Poitiers. A significant number of internationally renowned specialists had expressed their wish to participate in this meeting. The Scientific Committee proposed 16 general conferences and selected 33 regular lectures and 17 poster presentations. Papers corresponding to posters are not differentiated in the proceedings from those that were presented orally. It is worth noting that a total of 80 participants, representing 16 countries, registered for this symposium.. The Scientific Committee deserves praise for attracting a significant number of young scientists, both as authors and as participants. Let us add our warm acknowledgements to Professor J.W. Dally and to Professor A.S. Kobayashi who, throughout the symposium preparation time, brought us valuable help.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses arbitrary multiaxial stress states using the concept of equivalent stress. It highlights the most useful criteria, which can be applied to various classes of isotropic materials. Due to its simplicity and clarity, this concept is now widely used in component design, and many strength and yield criteria based on the equivalent stress concept have been formulated. Choosing the appropriate criterion for a given material remains the main challenge in applications. The most useful criteria can be applied best when the plausibility assumptions are known. Accordingly, the book introduces fitting methods based on mathematical, physical, and geometrical objective functions. It also features a wealth of examples that demonstrate the application of different approaches in modeling certain limit behaviors.

Book excerpt: Advances in Experimental Mechanics continues a series of conferences organised by the British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM), which aims to bring together and promote academic and industrial research in stress, strain and vibration measurement. The research contributions in the proceedings represent the state-of-art in experimental techniques and model validation, and incorporate a diverse range of applications and disciplines in mechanics, including biomedical, automotive, structural, aerospace and sports engineering. The common theme of the research papers is experimental techniques, signifying the strength of experimental data in gaining physical insights into engineering materials, systems and structures. The proceedings consists of seven themes, which highlight the current major research topics: noise and vibration, composite structures, fatigue and fracture, optical techniques, sensor technology, high strain rate applications, and strain gauge applications. The two keynote lectures indicate how measurement techniques are applied in sports engineering, to improve design of sports equipment and sports performance, and in composites, to characterise high strain rate behaviour. The Measurements Lecture, a traditional highlight of this conference series, is on high temperature behaviour under creep conditions. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the BSSM and the proceedings also offers a history of the key developments in experimental mechanics as chronicled by its journal Strain.

It presents the basic concepts and mathematics needed for understanding modern phase estimation methods. The book first focuses on phase retrieval from image transforms using a single frame. It then examines the local environment of a fringe pattern, the phase estimation approach based on local polynomial phase modeling, temporal high-resolution phase evaluation methods, and methods of phase unwrapping. It also discusses experimental imperfections liable to adversely influence the accuracy of phase measurements.
