Breinin, M.D. The study of visual processes is surely unique as a clinical specialty, in corporating the disciplines of physics, chemistry, physiology, and psycho logy. Diagnosing and correcting disorders of the visual system in these last two decades of the 20th century has brought all of us into close prox imity with computer sciences, laser technology, the marvels of electronic microcircuitry, and the impressive developments in optical materials. Dur ing the course of this meeting we shall be hearing about how these different technologies can interact with one another, and we shall discover that such interaction may produce new diagnostic tools and new optical devices. We shall also learn that the optical qualities of the eye change during life, producing subtle and complex alterations in vision. On behalf of the members and organizing committee of the American Commit tee on Optics and Visual Physiology and our co-sponsoring organization, the Optical Society of America, I welcome you to this second symposium on visual optics. The first symposium took place in Japan in 1978 and, like the pres ent one, was a satellite meeting of the International Congress of Ophthal mology. The third symposium in this series will take place in Italy in 1986 as part of the next session of the International Congress of Ophthalmology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses more than one hundred patients in which visual pathway is involved, and focuses on the role of visual field examination in the diagnosis of these diseases. It also highlights the application of concepts from the new interdiscipline, integration medicine as well as molecular biology and genetics in the analysis of the diseases. In this book, the commonly (typically) noticed changes in the visual field of patients with visual pathway disorders are mainly described in the chapter one titled as “Visual Field-related Anatomy of Visual Pathway” and chapter two titled as “Interpretation of Visual Field Test”, while the majority of the cases presented with "atypical" changes in visual field. At this point, the changes in the visual field could function as either a key to understand the disease, or a question mark which confuses the diagnosis. However, the process of pushing aside a fog around the diagnosis step by step helps the readers to gradually disclose the essence of the disease.

Book excerpt: In the last 10 years, there has been huge progress in the general understanding of ocular disorders due to the availability and development of new in vivo imaging techniques, such as anterior and posterior eye segment optical coherence tomography as well as biochemical methods allowing rapid confirmation of clinical diagnosis.Introducing noninvasive diagnostic methods in ophthalmology led to an improvement in early differential diagnosis of conditions such as corneal dystrophies, dry eye disease, and various retinal and optic nerve diseases.Recent advances in diagnostic methods have also impacted the treatment methods. This book intends to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of current ocular diagnostic methods, including the theoretical basis as well as practical approaches and usage in clinical practice.

Book excerpt: Advances made in diagnostic and imaging tech¬niques within the past years have revolutionized the clinical approach to, and the management of many ophthalmic diseases. Wavefront and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) have been incorporated as basic tools of refractive surgery, in the assessment of vitreoreti¬nal disorders, optic nerve pathologies, ocular tumors and ocular trauma. This book presents a comprehensive evaluation of current and emerging technologies used for clinical assessment in ophthalmology, as well as an in depth discussion of retinal angiography, both anterior and exterior segments, OCT, VHF ultrasound and other advanced imaging methods and techniques.

Book excerpt: This book describes the optical structure and optical properties of the human eye. For ease of reference, the most commonly useful topics are at the beginning and topics with narrower appeal are placed towards the end. The book is divided into five sections, covering: Basic optical structure of the eye, including the refracting components, the pupil, axes, and simple models of the eye Image formation and refraction of the eye, including refractive errors, measurement, and correction Interactions between light and the eye, considering transmission, reflection, and scatter in the media and at the fundus Aberrations and retinal image quality Depth-of-field and age-related changes in the optics of the eye There have been many developments in the field of visual optics since the first edition was published in 2000. There have been advances in instrumentation for imagery, biometry, and aberrations of the eye. The refraction anomaly of myopia has increased in prevalence throughout the world, and is getting increasing attention because of its association with ocular pathology in the middle and later years of life. Ocular aberrations are now considered in terms of Zernike polynomials rather than Taylor polynomials. Aberrations can be manipulated to better understand their effects on visual performance to improve imagery of the retina for the betterment of diagnosis of various ocular conditions, and to treat the progression of myopia in children. To deal with these developments, the section on aberrations and retinal image quality has undergone considerable revision. This book will be an invaluable purchase for all those with an interest in vision, such as optometrists, ophthalmologists, vision scientists, optical physics, and student of visual optics. An understanding of the optics of the human eye is particular important to designers of ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and visual optical systems such as telescopes.
