Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several unique time-resolved imaging techniques have been developed to address radio frequency (RF)-linac generated electron beams and the free-electron lasers (FEL) driven by such systems. The time structures of these beams involve a series of micropulses with 10 to 15-ps duration, separated by tens of nanoseconds. Mechanisms to convert the e-beam information to optical radiation include optical transition radiation (OTR), Cherenkov radiation, spontaneous emission radiation (SER), and the FEL mechanism itself. The use of gated, intensified television cameras and synchroscan and dual-sweep streak cameras to time-resolve these signals has greatly enhanced the power of these techniques. A brief review of the less familiar conversion mechanisms and electro-optic techniques is followed by a series of specific experimental examples from the RF linac FEL facilities at Los Alamos and Boeing (Seattle, WA). 23 refs., 35 figs., 3 tabs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characterizations of stored electron beams and more recently positron beams circulating in the Advanced Photon Source (APS) 7-GeV storage ring have been done using optical synchrotron radiation (SR) and x-ray synchrotron radiation (XSR) imaging techniques. Results include the measurement of the bunch length and horizontal beam size versus single-bunch current for both electron and positron beams, observations of multibunch bunch length effects near 100 mA stored beam current, and initial diagnostics of a coupled-bunch instability with 15-minute period. Both the Hamamatsu C5680 dual-sweep streak camera using OSR and a pinhole camera using XSR from a bending magnet source point were utilized. Proposed enhancements to the beamline will also be presented.

Book Synopsis Time-resolved Electron-beam Characterizations with Optical Transition Radiation by :
Download or read book Time-resolved Electron-beam Characterizations with Optical Transition Radiation written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-resolved characterizations of electron beams using optical transition radiation (OTR) as a prompt conversion mechanism have recently been extended on the Los Alamos Free-electron Laser (FEL) facility 40-MeV linac. Two key timescales for rf-linac driven FELs are the micropulse (10 ps) and the macropulse (5?s to 1 ms). In the past we have used gated, intensified cameras to select a single or few micropulses (25 to 400 ns gate width) out of the pulse train to evaluate submacropulse effects. Recently, we have obtained some of the first measurements of micropulse bunch length (7 to 10 ps) and submacropulse spatial position and profile using OTR and a Hamamatsu streak camera. Additionally, micropulse elongation effects and head-to-tail transverse kicks are reported as a function of charge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaging and spectroscopy are the most important and challenging techniques for not only research on materials science, chemistry, and biology, but also medical diagnoses. In this book, we have collected information on several novel imaging and spectroscopic techniques, including time-resolved electron diffraction/microscopy for materials science, various spectroscopes for physics and chemistry, and high-resolution computed tomography for medical science. We think that the content in each chapter is impressive and we hope this book will contribute to future instrument developments and new applications.

Book Synopsis Nondestructive Characterization of Materials VI by : Robert E. Green
Download or read book Nondestructive Characterization of Materials VI written by Robert E. Green and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally the vast majority of materials characterization techniques have been destructive, e. g. , chemical compositional analysis, metallographic determination of microstructure, tensile test measurement of mechanical properties, etc. Also, traditionally, nondestructive techniques have been used almost exclusively for the detection of macroscopic defects, mostly cracks, in structures and devices which have already been constructed and have already been in service for an extended period of time. Following these conventional nondestructive tests, it has been common practice to use somewhat arbitrary accept-reject criteria to decide whether or not the structure or device should be removed from service. The present unfavorable status of a large segment of industry, coupled with the desire to keep structures in service well past their original design life, dramatically show that our traditional approaches must be drastically modified if we are to be able to meet future needs. The role of nondestructive characterization of materials is changing and will continue to change dramatically. It has become increasingly evident that it is both practical and cost effective to expand the role of nondestructive evaluation to include all aspects of materials' production and application and to introduce it much earlier in the manufacturing cycle. In fact, the recovery of a large portion of industry from severe economic problems is dependent, in part, on the successful implementation of this expanded role.

Book Synopsis Visualizing Chemistry by : National Research Council
Download or read book Visualizing Chemistry written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-07-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists and engineers have long relied on the power of imaging techniques to help see objects invisible to the naked eye, and thus, to advance scientific knowledge. These experts are constantly pushing the limits of technology in pursuit of chemical imagingâ€"the ability to visualize molecular structures and chemical composition in time and space as actual events unfoldâ€"from the smallest dimension of a biological system to the widest expanse of a distant galaxy. Chemical imaging has a variety of applications for almost every facet of our daily lives, ranging from medical diagnosis and treatment to the study and design of material properties in new products. In addition to highlighting advances in chemical imaging that could have the greatest impact on critical problems in science and technology, Visualizing Chemistry reviews the current state of chemical imaging technology, identifies promising future developments and their applications, and suggests a research and educational agenda to enable breakthrough improvements.
