Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced English Grammar and Composition This book has been prepared especially for use in the intermediate and higher schools in the Philippine Islands. It presents a thorough study of the essentials of English Grammar and the elements of English Composition. The book is characterized by its use of the inductive method, the large number of illustrations, the extent and variety of application of each grammatical fact developed, the emphasis placed upon the verb and upon other features of special difficulty to the foreign learner of the language, and the development of the elements of composition with, and based upon, the topics in grammar. Exercises in word formation, also, are a valuable feature of the book, showing the relation of the more important parts of speech and the formation of important groups of words, and greatly aiding the pupil in learning and correctly using an extensive vocabulary. The book consists of three parts: Part I contains a brief review of the parts of speech and the elements of the sentence, with a variety of exercises in composition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Old English: Elementary Grammar and Reference Grammar The primary purpose of the authors of the Elements of Old English has been to produce an introductory book which will facilitate and expedite the teaching and study of Old English in such classes as their own, composed of graduate and advanced undergraduate students. To attain this object we have, in the Elementary Grammar, selected and arranged the essential paradigms, in the order of their relative importance, into twenty-four chapters designed as progressive lessons. In this part of the book the less frequent variant forms have been omitted. All the grammatical information necessary to enable a student to begin reading freely is contained in the first seven chapters. Each chapter includes a reading selection adapted to the advancing capacity of the student, and accompanied by notes explaining those forms which have not yet been presented systematically. In the chapters the primitive and prehistoric Old English sound changes have been explained more fully on a historical and phonetic basis than is usual in such a book as this, partly in order to clarify and rationalize the apparent irregularities of the inflections, and partly in order to acquaint elementary students with the methods and principles of the historical study of language and linguistic change. In the Reference Grammar is given a systematic and ordered treatment of Old English phonology and morphology which serves to bridge the gap between the Elementary Grammar and such standard grammars as those of Cosijn, Sievers, Wright, and Biilbring. It was originally intended to include a considerable body of texts with notes and glossary; but to do this at present would render the cost of the book prohibitive. The Elementary Grammar has been used in mimeographed editions at the Universities of Chicago, Michigan, and Wisconsin, at North western University, and at other universities and colleges. It has been twice re-written, and is now issued with the changes suggested by experience and criticism. Further criticisms and corrections from instructors and students will be welcomed. On the other hand, however, I insist upon the certainty that, when the book has once been mastered, the student will have been brought sufficiently far in Philology to find all that comes afterwards easy beyond expectation. He will have as much Logic as explains the structure of propositions, and that is nearly as much as is wanted at all for philological purposes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief English Grammar Since this book is designed for the pupil rather than for the teacher, all suggestions as to the teaching of English grammar have been conveyed rather by implication than by specific recommendation. The text itself is, however, designed to indicate a general method of presentation, vari able in detail at the will of the individual teacher. Each chapter, it will be evident, presents not the material for any fixed number of class recitations, but rather a single subject, divisible according to the available time, the capacity of the students, and other practical considerations. These conditions will necessarily determine the particular assign ment for any given recitation; but they should not be al lowed to destroy the essential unity of a subject. The summary and definitions following each lesson may well be used by the teacher to test the students' knowledge of that subject as a whole. Passages printed in brevier are supple mentary and subordinate in importance, and hence may be used or omitted at discretion. The questions and exercises are suggestive merely, inviting both modification and sup plement by the teacher.
