With the majority of the global communications being transported on submarine point-to-point fiber-optic systems, different cutting-edge technologies have been under research to cope with this unprecedented traffic growth. Continuous advances in high-speed integrated circuits have allowed the use of advanced modulation formats and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques to maximize the transmission spectral efficiency. With mitigation of fiber linear effects efficiently carried out by DSP with relative low-complexity, the capacity of modern fiber optic systems rests limited by fiber nonlinearities. To this extent, in the first part of this work, the performance and achievable benefits of low-complexity DSP techniques aiming to mitigate fiber Kerr nonlinear effects are investigated. Besides nonlinear compensation techniques, the use of multi-level modulation formats beyond 16QAM and high symbol rate channels have gained momentum to increase the system spectral efficiency. One of the major breakthroughs in the recent years, has been the introduction of QAM-based probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS-QAM), which has proven to outperform regular QAM formats. In this sense, in the second part of this work, the practical achievable rate increase brought by PCS-QAM for transoceanic distances is investigated. A theoretical and experimental comparison with other high-capacity formats is performed, and the design of a PCS-QAM for trans-Pacific distances is addressed. Finally, in the last section, several transmission records using the two above techniques are reported.

Book excerpt: Optical fibre networks form the backbone of the global communication infrastructure but are currently experiencing an unprecedented level of stress due to more and more bandwidth-hungry applications. In an effort to address this and avoid a so-called capacity crunch, research groups around the world have focused their attention on more spectrally-efficient modulation formats, to increase available capacity at a competitive cost. However, the drive towards higher- order modulation formats leads to greater transmission impairments, reducing the maximum distance over which increased capacity can be provided. The thesis describes the research work carried out to investigate the achievable transmission distances when using higher order modulation formats together with digital backpropagation (DBP). DBP is a digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm, capable of compensating for deterministic nonlinear impairments by inverting the fibre channel. Single-channel and wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) transmission has been investigated in experiment and simulation for a variety of polarisation-division-multiplexed (PDM) modulation formats: binary-phase-shift-keying (PDM-BPSK), quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK), 8-phase-shift-keying (PDM-8PSK), 8-quadrature amplitude modulation (PDM-8QAM), 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (PDM-16QAM) and polarisation-switched QPSK (PS-QPSK). Record transmission distances were achieved in WDM transmission experiments with PDM-BPSK, PS-QPSK and PDM-QPSK at 42.9Gbit/s as well as for PDM-8PSK and PDM-8QAM at 112Gbit/s, over the most common fibre type: standard single mode fibre (SSMF) and the most common amplification solution: erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFA). For the first time, nonlinear compensation has been compared experimentally for different modulation formats and a fixed-complexity DBP algorithm. Its use led to increased benefit for more spectrally efficient modulation formats. Computer simulations were used to explore the upper bounds of achievable performance improvement with DBP, using an algorithm with unconstrained complexity. Furthermore, DBP was investigated for varying symbol rates and channel spacings to investigate trade-offs with respect to the digital receiver bandwidth. It was shown that even though DBP is computationally expensive, it can achieve significant improvements in transmission reach and BER performance. The results presented in this thesis, can be applied to the design of future optical transmission systems.

Digital linear filtering is an indispensable technique that facilitates the advancement of coherent optical transmission systems. Currently, most digital linear filtering techniques are employed for mitigation or compensation for linear impairments, such as chromatic dispersion compensation, channel equalization and spectrally efficient pulse shaping. This thesis explores the potential of digital linear filtering techniques for mitigating both linear and nonlinear impairments in the fiber-optic transmissions.Polarization division multiplexed (PDM) high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) provides a spectrally efficient solution for coherent optical transmission systems. PDM technique uses blind equalizers for polarization demultiplexing. We propose the decision directed least radius distance (DD LRD) blind equalizer for coherent optical transmission systems. Compared to other equalizers, the DD-LRD equalizer is found to have good steady state bit error rate (BER), better tolerance to high speed polarization rotation, excellent inter symbol interference (ISI) tolerance and less sensitivity to initial conditions. Pulse shaping is traditionally utilized for increasing spectral efficiency. We propose a new family of pulses, called frequency domain root M-shape pulses (RMP), to mitigate Kerr nonlinearity in the fiber channel. Experimental and simulation demonstrations reveal that compared to the widely used root raised cosine (RRC) pulses, the RMP can significantly extend the transmission reach in standard single mode fiber based dispersion unmanaged links and most legacy links using various fiber types and dispersion maps. The enhanced nonlinearity tolerance of the RMP is attributed to the fact that the RMP put more energy contents in their higher spectral components and disperse faster in a dispersive medium. In comparison with other nonlinearity mitigation or compensation algorithms, the RMP filtering technique embraces the following advantages for next generation optical networks: computationally efficient, link configuration independent and modulation format transparent." --

Almost all of world's long-haul internet traffic is carried by these optical backbone networks. Despite the fact that the internet bubble ended in the early 2000s, its traffic has been constantly increasing at an astounding rate of 75% per year. In addition to that, new emerging video-centric applications such as IPTV will continue to increase the demand on the underlying optical backbone networks.As a result, ten to twenty years from now, optical networks will have to carry vastly increased amounts of data. However, recent research shows that fundamental limits in optical backbone networks are being approached. These limits are imposed by noise generated from inline amplifiers used to boost up the signal and the intrinsic nonlinearity of conventional standard single mode fiber (S-SMF). In order to meet long-term needs and challenges, therefore, research in wideband optical subsystems enabling high capacity long-haul transmission must be urgently pursued. One approach to break through the current capacity limit is a combination of using advanced modulation formats like coherent optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (CO-OFDM) and fiber nonlinearity mitigation techniques. In OFDM, the orthogonal property of the sub-carriers allows formation of an almost rectangular spectrum, which increases spectral efficiency. However, at the high powers required for higher order modulation formats, the nonlinearity in the fiber causes nonlinear mixing between the subcarriers, restricting the maximum allowable power below nonlinear threshold, and hence constraining the total capacity and distance.The PhD thesis proposed using mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) that uses optical phase conjugation (OPC) module to mitigate the fiber nonlinearity in CO-OFDM systems.Using MSSI, the spectrum of the first-half of the link (from the Tx to the OPC module) will be inverted by Four-Wave Mixing (FWM) of the OFDM signal with a pump wave. The spectrally inverted signal is then selected to pass through the second half of the link. Because the signal is spectrally inverted, the second half of the link should undo the dispersion and nonlinearity of the first half of the link.During the project, a detailed analytical formalism to describe the performance of the OPC module has been developed. This aids the design and improvement of fundamental performance of OPC module. The first experimental demonstration of using MSSI in a coherent system has been made using dual polarization CO-OFDM systems carrying 1.21-Tb/s over 800 km. A design outline for optimum performance using MSSI has been developed. Two novel methods for improving the fundamental performance of MSSI have been proposed. The first method splits the nonlinear element into two parts, inserting a notch filter to remove the pump and then reinserting the pump into the second part of the nonlinear element. The second method uses a phase shift filter between the two nonlinear elements, to improve robustness in practical implementation. Both methods offer 1 dB of maximum signal quality improvement in a 10 x 80-km 4-QAM 224-Gb/s CO-OFDM system.In summary, this work has demonstrated by simulation and experiments that MSSI offers benefits to coherent optical systems, including OFDM systems. It has developed analytical formalisms that identify the performance-limiting mechanisms in optical phase conjugators based on third order nonlinearity, and has introduced two methods of mitigating these mechanisms. MSSI fell from favour in the mid-2000s due to its complexity. However, after this successful demonstration of fiber nonlinearity compensation using MSSI in a coherent system, MSSI has now drawn considerable attention recently. Subsequently, there have been demonstrations of Raman-enhanced MSSI and multiple phase-conjugations based coherent systems at the 2014 conference on Optical Fiber Communications (OFC).

Short haul applications need low cost and low complexity solutions with direct detection, as the cost of coherent detection comes down, it will become a good candidate for future short-haul applications to increase spectral efficiency and exploit advanced modulation formats. In this thesis, we investigate solutions for both current and future short-haul systems. In the first part, we focus on solutions for short haul applications. The first chapter is the first time demonstration of more than 100 Gb/s discrete multi-tone (DMT) transmission using an O-band silicon photonics (SiP). We experimentally compare DMT with pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) on O-band. Our experiment shows that by increasing fiber length more than 10 km, PAM outperforms DMT. For C-band, we use single sideband discrete multi-tone (SSB-DMT) to avoid chromatic dispersion-induced power fading e_ect. We study the effect of phase noise, chromatic dispersion, and receiver sensitivity to optimize DMT signal and extract theoretical equations to calculate bit error rate (BER) of SSB-DMT. Next, we analytically compare PAM on O-band with SSB-DMT on C-band and quantify the impact of hardware-imposed limitations on both modulation formats. Our study provides an analytical tool for short haul applications to select appropriate modulation format and hardware based on required reach, bit rate, etc. In the second part we examine complex modulation formats that will be enabled in the future by low cost, integrated components for coherent detection.. We use an advanced modulation format in which we combined discrete Fourier transform spread with DMT to increase spectral efficiency. Hybrid modulation format has a lower peak to average power ratio (vis-a-vis DMT) and higher spectral efficiency (vis-a-vis single carrier QAM). In the first step, we experimentally compare the performance of the hybrid, standard DMT, and single carrier modulations using a SiP IQ modulator. Next, we develop a driving strategy for hybrid modulation format by trading off the modulator transfer function non-linearity and optical signal to noise ratio. Then hybrid modulation format is optimized to have maximum throughput. Using Monte Carlo simulation we compare optimized hybrid modulation format with standard DMT for different bit rates. Finally, we have a complexity comparison between hybrid and DMT for different fiber lengths to motivate same investigation for long-haul applications where, we should consider fiber non-linearity, attenuation,a polarization multiplexing.

We overview several modulation formats intrinsically tolerant to fiber nonlinearity. We recently proposed family of 4D modulation formats based on 2-ary amplitude 8-ary phase-shift keying (2A8PSK), covering the spectral efficiency of 5, 6, and 7 bits/4D symbol, which will be explained in detail in this chapter. These coded modulation formats fill the gap of spectral efficiency between DP-QPSK and DP-16QAM, showing superb performance both in linear and nonlinear regimes. Since these modulation formats share the same constellation and use different parity bit expressions only, digital signal processing can accommodate those multiple modulation formats with minimum additional complexity. Nonlinear transmission simulations indicate that these modulation formats outperform the conventional formats at each spectral efficiency. We also review DSP algorithms and experimental results. Their application to time-domain hybrid modulation for 4-8 bits/4D symbol is also reviewed. Furthermore, an overview of an eight-dimensional 2A8PSK-based modulation format based on a Grassmann code is also given. All these results indicate that the 4D-2A8PSK family show great promise of excellent linear and nonlinear performances in the spectral efficiency between 3.5 and 8 bits/4D symbol.

In this work, we study the different optical applications: Wide Area Networks (WANs), Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs), Local Area Networks (LANs) and Personal Area Networks (PANs). In WANs or long-haul systems, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) can compensate for linear distortions, such as group-velocity dispersion (GVD) and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), provided the cyclic prefix is sufficiently long. Typically, GVD is dominant, as it requires a longer cyclic prefix. Assuming coherent detection, we show how to analytically compute the minimum number of subcarriers and cyclic prefix length required to achieve a specified power penalty, trading off power penalties from the cyclic prefix and from residual inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI). We derive an analytical expression for the power penalty from residual ISI and ICI. We also show that when nonlinear effects are present in the fiber, single-carrier with digital equalization outperforms OFDM for various dispersion maps. We also study the impairments of electrical to optical conversion when using Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulators. OFDM has a high peak-to-average ratio (PAR), which can result in low optical power efficiency when modulated through a Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulator. In addition, the nonlinear characteristic of the MZ can cause significant distortion on the OFDM signal, leading to in-band intermodulation products between subcarriers. We show that a quadrature MZ with digital pre-distortion and hard clipping is able to overcome the previous impairments. We consider quantization noise and compute the minimum number of bits required in the digital-to-analog converter (D/A). Finally, we discuss a dual-drive MZ as a simpler alternative for the OFDM modulator, but our results show that it requires a higher oversampling ratio to achieve the same performance as the quadrature MZ. In MANs, we discuss the use OFDM for combating GVD effects in amplified direct-detection (DD) systems using single-mode fiber. We review known direct-detection OFDM techniques, including asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM), DC-clipped OFDM (DC-OFDM) and single-sideband OFDM (SSB-OFDM), and derive a linearized channel model for each technique. We present an iterative procedure to achieve optimum power allocation for each OFDM technique, since there is no closed-form solution for amplified DD systems. For each technique, we minimize the optical power required to transmit at a given bit rate and normalized GVD by iteratively adjusting the bias and optimizing the power allocation among the subcarriers. We verify that SSB-OFDM has the best optical power efficiency among the different OFDM techniques. We compare these OFDM techniques to on-off keying (OOK) with maximum-likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) and show that SSB-OFDM can achieve the same optical power efficiency as OOK with MLSD, but at the cost of requiring twice the electrical bandwidth and also a complex quadrature modulator. We compare the computational complexity of the different techniques and show that SSB-OFDM requires fewer operations per bit than OOK with MLSD. In LANs, we compare the performance of several OFDM schemes to that of OOK in combating modal dispersion in multimode fiber links. We review known OFDM techniques using intensity modulation with direct detection (IM/DD), including DC-OFDM, ACO-OFDM and pulse-amplitude modulated discrete multitone (PAM-DMT). We describe an iterative procedure to achieve optimal power allocation for DC-OFDM, and compare analytically the performance of ACO-OFDM and PAM-DMT. We also consider unipolar M-ary pulse-amplitude modulation (M-PAM) with minimum mean-square error decision-feedback equalization (MMSE-DFE). For each technique, we quantify the optical power required to transmit at a given bit rate in a variety of multimode fibers. For a given symbol rate, we find that unipolar M-PAM with MMSE-DFE has a better power performance than all OFDM formats. Furthermore, we observe that the difference in performance between M-PAM and OFDM increases as the spectral efficiency increases. We also find that at a spectral efficiency of 1 bit/symbol, OOK performs better than ACO-OFDM using a symbol rate twice that of OOK. At higher spectral efficiencies, M-PAM performs only slightly better than ACO-OFDM using twice the symbol rate, but requires less electrical bandwidth and can employ analog-to-digital converters at a speed only 81% of that required for ACO-OFDM. In PANs, we evaluate the performance of the three IM/DD OFDM schemes in combating multipath distortion in indoor optical wireless links, comparing them to unipolar M-PAM with MMSE-DFE. For each modulation method, we quantify the received electrical SNR required at a given bit rate on a given channel, considering an ensemble of 170 indoor wireless channels. When using the same symbol rate for all modulation methods, M-PAM with MMSE-DFE has better performance than any OFDM format over a range of spectral efficiencies, with the advantage of M-PAM increasing at high spectral efficiency. ACO-OFDM and PAM-DMT have practically identical performance at any spectral efficiency. They are the best OFDM formats at low spectral efficiency, whereas DC-OFDM is best at high spectral efficiency. When ACO-OFDM or PAM-DMT are allowed to use twice the symbol rate of M-PAM, these OFDM formats have better performance than M-PAM. When channel state information is unavailable at the transmitter, however, M-PAM significantly outperforms all OFDM formats. When using the same symbol rate for all modulation methods, M-PAM requires approximately three times more computational complexity per processor than all OFDM formats and 63% faster analog-to-digital converters, assuming oversampling ratios of 1.23 and 2 for ACO-OFDM and M-PAM, respectively. When OFDM uses twice the symbol rate of M-PAM, OFDM requires 23% faster analog-to-digital converters than M-PAM but OFDM requires approximately 40% less computational complexity than M-PAM per processor.

Book excerpt: The objective of the proposed research is to investigate the performance of advanced modulation formats, specifically modified duobinary return-to zero (MD-RZ) modulation scheme and its long-haul repeaterless transmission over standard single mode fiber (SMF). This research also focuses on phase modulation formats like differential phase shift keying (DPSK) and differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK), specifically free spectral range (FSR) optimization and wavelength offset tolerance in direct detection of these phase modulated systems. In this research we present a novel and cost effective technique to generate a modified duobinary return-to-zero (MD-RZ) signal. Next, we attained experimental results for single channel and WDM repeaterless transmission using these MD-RZ signals. A numerical comparison is also drawn with other conventional MD-RZ transmitters. MD-RZ transmission characteristics are also studied numerically for 40 Gb/s WDM signals and compared with other two leading constant intensity phase modulated formats like DPSK and DQPSK. We also have presented experimental results for FSR optimization of DQPSK de-modulator for ultra-high data-rate systems in the presence of strong optical filtering. Choice of an optimal FSR beyond 1-bit delay in Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer (MZ-DI) helps relieving some of the degradations due to strong optical filtering. Wavelength offset tolerance is also experimentally measured and numerically investigated for DPSK and DQPSK modulation formats with different transmitter schemes employing intensity or phase modulators to achieve required phase shifts.
