Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Lessons in English This volume would never have been published if it were not for the belief that just such a book is needed. Colleges and high schools are trying to' place the blame, each upon the other, for the faulty English found in college com positions and in the writings of graduates. The weakness lies rather in the earliest teaching of English. Pupils who do not master elementary principles at the very beginning of their study of expression will never be able to recover the lost time. Later teachers will take for granted knowl edge of which the pupils are not possessed. To meet the need of a text book by aid of which pupils may be started right is the reason for this volume. Names of authors have rarely been given, except where the example illustrates an exception to the general rule. The quotations are all from standard authors, and by pref erence from the poets. The pupil should be made to feel that the poetic language is not a thing apart from daily life. The essential unity of the language is illustrated by these examples which may be supplemented by homelier ones of the pupil's own choosing or composition. The author's aim briefly stated is to meet practical needs by the application of sound pedagogical principles. The result desired is the improvement of the teaching of English so that an increasing number of our young people may be prepared to enjoy the beauties of English literature and to express their own ideas in words not unworthy of those who speak the language of Milton and of Longfellow. Download or read book English Grammar written by Mary V. Lee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Grammar: An Advanced Course of Lessons in Language The standard language of any people is not formed or materially modified by the arbitrary rules of any author on grammar. Gram mar is a codifying of the laws of the language. These are derived from an examination of the structure. After long observation and comparison of facts, by induction we reach them. Hence, is it not proper that pupils should be trained to investigate, examine the lan guage as it is, compare, search out and give expression to those laws? Will not such a course tend to fit them both for practical life and inde pendent research? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Sheldon's Advanced Language Lessons by : Sheldon and Company
Download or read book Sheldon's Advanced Language Lessons written by Sheldon and Company and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sheldon's Advanced Language Lessons: Grammar and Composition To experienced teachers it has long been evident that pupils trained in old-style grammar too often lack the power of expression. Indeed, it has been charged, that though their heads are full of theory, and though they have hundreds of rules at the end of their tongues, they are unable to write a single clear, strong, smooth English sentence. Sheldon's Language Lessons will be welcomed by all who believe that technical grammar should be developed side by side with practical composition. In the second book of this comprehensive series, rules and principles are accompanied by illustrative extracts from good authors, and followed by attractive problems in construction. In connection with sentence building, punctuation is introduced; and the rules are correlated with the laws of English expression. By easy lessons in synonyms and figures, and occasional reference to the fundamental principles of effective dis course, students are gradually prepared for a systematic view of rhetoric. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Lessons in Language: A Book for Intermediate Grades IN the Preface to the 1906 edition occurs the following paragraph: Although these books contain much that is new and unhackneyed, they are not untried. The material which they contain has been tested in many schools under widely different conditions, and has been found workable. The Lessons in English do not come before the school public, therefore, as strangers knocking at the gate and waiting to be introduced: they appear rather as familiar friends renewing old acquaintance and seeking a wider recognition in a circle where they have already made their standing good. Download or read book Language Lessons written by Alma Blount and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Language Lessons: Intermediate Grades In publishing, under the general title of Progressive Studies in English, a series of volumes intended for.use in American grade and high schools, the authors desire to say that it has been their aim to furnish-manuals of grammar and composition that shall prove eminently practical and helpful from the point of view of both teacher and pupil. There IS still such great variety of opinions among teachers of these subjects that no writer of text-books can hope to please all classes. The views of the authors of these books must be described in gen eral as conservative; they have adopted, however, with gratitude, the best suggestions of recent writers on the teaching of language regardless of schools of thought. It is believed that these books will be found to provide a minimum of theory with the maximum amount of practice, based on models of acknowledged excellence. It has been deemed wise to gather further discussion of purpose and method in language in the elementary grades into a small pamphlet, which the publishers will take pleasure in sending to all teachers interested. Download or read book Introductory Lessons in English Literature written by Israel C. McNeill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Lessons in English Literature: For High Schools and Academies This book is chiefly the outgrowth of experience and observation in teaching English to beginning classes. It is thought that the work outlined will give the pupil something definite to do during the preparation of the lesson, without encroaching upon the time that should be devoted to the recitation itself. By understanding the aim of the lesson, the pupil's mind, through previous application and awakening, becomes a fertile soil into which the seed of the teacher's thought and inspiration may fall and in due time yield an abundant harvest. In choosing the literary selections the needs of the student for life and citizenship have received the first consideration, but the work required for admission to col leges has not been slighted. The aim has been to present types of art in order to furnish an apperceiving basis for future study and appreciation of literature. After a thorough training such as this book is intended to give, more advanced work can be taken up with confidence. Book Synopsis Lessons in English by : Chestine Gowdy
Download or read book Lessons in English written by Chestine Gowdy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in English: Book II Every attempt of a child to express himself is a composition, - a putting together of ideas; and every classroom exercise that calls for self-expression, whatever its special purpose, is incidentally a language lesson. But the teacher can hardly stop in the midst of an arithmetic or a geography lesson to establish principles of speech and then fix them by the necessary drill. It is by special work that we must prepare the way for the incidental language work of the day and supplement it by extended drill; and it is for use in this special language work that these Lessons in English were written. Since the first requisite of good speech is that it shall be sincere, - that it shall be the expression of a real interest, - we have aimed first of all to deepen existing interests of the children, and at the same time to awaken new ones. To attain these ends we have made free use of the following means: 1. Stories, Poems, and Pictures. Through these we have aimed to satisfy the child's natural love of adventure, to stimulate his imagination, to suggest interesting discussions, to link more closely school and home life, to give deeper significance and dignity to labor, and to develop an appreciation of nature. Many old favorites, which are still new to each generation of children, are included among the literary selections. But there will be found also a considerable number of recent poems and stories.
