Book excerpt: Advanced Fashion Drawing is a practical book showing not only how to draw the figure but also how to illustrate it in today’s fashion and lifestyle market. Designed specifically for those interested in illustrating fashion and lifestyle commercially, Bil Donovan demonstrates how to create an illustration with a sense of fashion, rather than one that concentrates solely on the fashion figure. A series of demonstrations and exercises help the advanced illustration student hone their skills and increase their level of draughtsmanship, while establishing their own personal style.

The kind way in which a former book of mine, -Lessons on Decorative Design, - was received by critics, teachers, and students, has led me to yield to a widely expressed desire that I should write a more advanced work on the same subject. Hence the present volume, which, I trust, may be of service to those for whom it is specially designed. Like the previous volume, it does not pretend to be a book of designs, but a book on design - not a picture book, but a school text-book. The illustrations and diagrams have been selected and designed with the view of explaining principles and directing practice. Many of them are reproductions of impromptu sketches drawn on the blackboard while lecturing to my classes. Throughout the work I have insisted on the observance of principles, regard for construction, and the law of development. These are necessary aids in the infant stage of a student's education. They will not seem so important to him as years advance. With the increase of knowledge and experience he will come to see how far rule and precept may be wisely relaxed, and will enter on the enjoyment of that true freedom which is the heritage of the well-grounded student.

Each chapter focuses on one technique, covering its history, the tools and techniques needed to achieve it, along with examples from designers and illustrators from around the world – all with critical reflection on what works, and why. Whether you're lettering by hand or digitally, Drawn to Type is perfect for use alongside courses in illustration and typography, and as an inspirational guide for designers looking to give the written word that visual impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a basic introduction to the principles of industrial design and their application in all phases of planning and production. It is intended to offer experienced instruction, based on scientific knowledge, in place of the intuitive approach to the field often encountered in engineering practice and education. The book presents basic principles and constitutes an exposition of these fundamental axioms and their application. The emphasis is on identifying problems in a clear, scientific manner, so that the correct solution may be arrived at regardless of the mathematical treatment involved. In particular, the importance of conceptualizing design approaches--a uniquely human, intellectual skill--is highlighted, since too often educators and engineers try to limit this process to computer techniques. Case studies are extensively presented to illustrate the significance as well as the use of the axioms in solving real problems. The work is based on extensive experience at M.I.T's Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity, where axiomatics is a major program. The goal of the program is to bring a scientific approach to the decision-making process related to manufacturing--an approach that facilitates rational design of processes and products, as well as the optimization of manufacturing systems.
