Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems biology is the inevitable outcome of long years of knowledge acquisition and data accumulation. The aim of systems biology is to integrate in a seamless way all existing knowledge in interconnected disciplines, stretching from modern biomedical research to physics, chemistry, and mathematics. The main integration tool of such complex biomedical systems is via computational and mathematical modeling. In this direction, a series of state-of-the-art computer science techniques are used, namely, data mining and fusion, machine learning, and deep learning all under the prism of big data. All in all, systems biology is at the arrowhead of modern and state-of-the-art biomedical research by attempting to address key biological questions describing holistically complex biological systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Chemical Biology The modern approach to teaching chemical biology Advanced Chemical Biology is organized around the central dogma of life, progressing from genes to proteins and higher-order cellular structures, including core application areas such as imaging, chemical genetics, activity-based protein profiling, and natural product discovery and biosynthesis. Advanced topics and applications in, e. g., microbiology, developmental biology, and neurobiology, are covered in separate sections. Every chapter is homogeneous in style and layout, consisting of a short historical introduction followed by a description of the underlying concepts and a selection of recent examples of how the concept has been turned into practice. The subdivision of the contents into core and supplemental chapters enables a flexible use in teaching, both for a one-semester and a two-semester course. Written by authors and editors coming from the leading scientific institutions that have developed the concepts and technologies for this discipline, Advanced Chemical Biology includes specific information on topics like: DNA function, synthesis and engineering, chemical approaches to genome integrity, and RNA function, synthesis, and probing Chemical approaches to transcription and RNA regulation in vivo, chemical biology of genome engineering, and peptide/protein synthesis and engineering Directed evolution for chemical biology, chemical biology of cellular metabolism, chemical biology of lipids, and protein post-translational modifications Chemical glycobiology, chemical and enzymatic modification of proteins, genetic code expansion, bio-orthogonal chemistry, and cellular imaging With its broad scope and focus on turning concepts into applications, Advanced Chemical Biology is an excellent starting point for anyone entering the field and looking for a guide to the wide range of available methods and strategies that chemical biology has to offer. With a Foreword by Nobel Laureate Carolyn Bertozzi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface from the first edition (1996): "The world of modern science is undergoing a number of spectacular events that are redefining our understanding of ourselves. As with any revolution, we should take stock of where we have been, where we are, and where we are going. Our special world of bone biology is participating in and taking advantage of the larger global revolution in modern science... we assembled experts from all over the world and asked them to focus on the current state of knowledge and the prospects for new knowledge in their area of expertise. To this end, Principles of Bone Biology was conceived." - John P. Bilezikian, Lawrence G. Raisz, Gideon A. Rodan Praise for the previous edition: "Students, teachers, and practitioners will benefit from reading it, and investigators will use it as a reference work; it will certainly be consulted frequently." --The New England Journal of Medicine For over two decades, "Big Gray" has been the go-to repository of knowledge in the disciplines related to bone and mineral metabolism. The fourth edition is a must-have for students new to the field; young investigators at the graduate or postgraduate level beginning their research careers; established scientists who need to keep up with the changing nature of the field, looking to enrich their own research programs, or who are changing their career direction; clinicians who want ready access to up-to-date relevant basic science. This new edition builds on the successful formula from previous editions, taking the reader from the basic elements of fundamental research to the most sophisticated concepts in therapeutics. Principles of Bone Biology, Fourth Edition provides the most comprehensive, authoritative reference on the study of bone biology and related diseases. Bone research continues to generate enormous attention, due to the broad public health implications of osteoporosis and related bone disorders. This classic, fully updated, two volume reference is designed for anyone involved in the study of bone biology. - Provides a "one-stop" shopping paradise. Anything you want to find about bone biology is here and written by the world's experts - THE essential resource for anyone involved in the study of the skeleton and metabolic bone diseases - Covers everything from the basic scientific concepts to the underlying principles of therapeutics and management - Allows readers to easily search and locate information quickly in the online format - Volumes include: Basic Principles; Molecular Mechanisms of Metabolic Bone Disease; Pharmacological Mechanisms of Therapeutics; Methods in Bone Research

This book was released on 2023-07-15 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to gather the current knowledge regarding different aspects of brain and spinal cord tumors in order to more efficiently help the patients. Brain tumors comprise about 5–9% of all human neoplasms; and the central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms are ranked among the most prevalent neoplasms of childhood as well. The more we know about the nature and characteristic of brain and spinal cord tumors, the more precise decision could be made for each patient, in order to reach the best outcome. While surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy have been considered as the standards of care for benign and/or malignant CNS tumors since a long time ago, new therapeutic approaches such as immunotherapy have been recently proposed to be considered for treatment of CNS tumors, especially as in some cases, the tumors might be inoperable or the patient may not benefit from other treatment modalities after several recurrences. The second volume of the book focuses on clinical aspects of these tumors. Accordingly, the most important brain and spinal cord tumors are specifically discussed in each chapter based on a rational outlining for all chapter in this volume: Background and epidemiology, genetics, immunology and molecular biology, histopathology and morphology, imaging and radiologic features, clinical manifestations, therapeutic approaches, surgical intervention, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, new therapeutic modalities, follow-up, and prognosis. The chapters of this volume discuss the following pathologies of brain and spinal cord tumors: malignant glioma, benign glioma, meningiomas and other meningeal tumors, ependymomas, medulloblastomas, pineal tumors, choroid plexus and ventricular tumors, neuroectodermal tumors of CNS, neuroepithelial tumors of CNS, pituitary gland tumors, craniopharyngioma, schwannomas and nerve-sheet tumors, hemangioblastomas and other vascular originating tumors, brain and spinal tumors of embryonic origin, germ line cell tumors, malignant bone or cartilage-originating tumors of brain and spine, benign bone or cartilage-originating tumors of brain and spine, brain tumors affecting the orbit globe and orbit tumors affecting the brain, CNS lymphomas, metastatic lesions of the brain and spine, malignant spinal tumors, benign spinal tumors, brain and/or spinal cord tumors accompanied with other diseases or syndromes, psychological and psychiatric aspects of brain and spinal cord tumors, a brief explanation on surgical approaches for treatment of different brain tumors. This volume of book is useful for physicians of different specialties, mainly neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuropathologists, and neuroradiologists.
