Book excerpt: The ideal, simple and basic power cycles (Carnot Cycle, Brayton Cycle, Otto Cycle and Diesel Cycle), ideal power cycle components/processes (compression, combustion and expansion) and ideal compressible flow components (subsonic nozzle, diffuser and thrust) are presented in this technical background material. When dealing with power cycles two different approaches are taken with respect to the working fluid. For Carnot Cycle and Brayton Cycle, air, argon, helium and nitrogen are considered as the working fluid. For Otto Cycle and Diesel Cycle, only air is used as the working fluid. When dealing with power cycle components/processes (compression and expansion) and compressible flow (nozzle, diffuser and thrust), air, argon, helium and nitrogen are used as the working fluid. When dealing with combustion, six different fuels (carbon, hydrogen, sulfur, coal, oil and gas) react with air and oxygen enriched air as the oxidant at different stoichiometry values (stoichiometry => 1) and oxidant inlet temperature values. For each power cycle thermal efficiency derivation is presented with a simple mathematical approach. Also, for each power cycle, a T - s diagram and power cycle major performance trends (thermal efficiency, specific power output, power output, combustion products composition on weight and mole basis, specific fuel consumption and stoichiometry) are plotted in a few figures as a function of compression ratio, turbine inlet temperature and/or final combustion temperature and working fluid mass flow rate. It should be noted that this technical background material does not deal with costs (capital, operational or maintenance). For compression and expansion, the technical performance of mentioned power cycle components/processes is presented with a given relationship between pressure and temperature. While for combustion, the technical performance at stoichiometry => 1 conditions is presented knowing the enthalpy values for combustion reactants and products, given as a function of temperature. This course provides the compression and expansion T - s diagrams and their major performance trends plotted in a few figures as a function of compression and expansion ratio values and working fluid mass flow rate. For each combustion case considered, combustion products composition on both weight and mole basis is given in tabular form and plotted in a few figures. Also, flame temperature, stoichiometric oxidant to fuel ratio and fuel higher heating value (HHV) are presented in tabular form and plotted in a few figures. The provided output data and plots allow one to determine the major combustion performance laws and trends. For subsonic nozzle, diffuser and thrust, the technical performance of mentioned compressible flow components is presented with a given relationship between temperature and pressure as a function of the Mach Number. This technical background material provides the compressible flow components T - s diagrams and their major performance trends (stagnation over static temperature and pressure ratio values) are plotted in a few figures as a function of the Mach Number. In this technical background material, one gets familiar with the ideal simple and basic power cycles, power cycle components/processes and compressible flow components and their T - s and h - T diagrams, operation and major performance trends.

With limiting amount of fossil fuels and increasing demand of energy, we are facing the grand challenge of energy sustainability. Energy saving strategies may help to extend the usage of hydrocarbon fossil fuel, but can not solve the problem completely. Renewable energy seems to be the only solution. All the renewable energy sources, solar energy, wind energy, biomass rely on effective energy conversion materials and systems to benefit human beings. Various energy conversion materials and systems including photovoltaic (PV) solar cells and wind turbines have been developed for generating electricity from renewable energy sources such as sunlight and wind. High energy conversion efficiencies are critical for large scale applications of these systems. To understand the fundamentals of energy conversion mechanisms is the very first step. Materials have taken indispensable roles in energy conversions. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce the latest research progress on energy conversion materials to readers at various levels. The content of the book deals with various materials and processing techniques for energy conversions. A comprehensive state-of-the-art review on nanomaterials, related processing technologies and applications will be provided. Considerable effort has been made to elaborate the technological aspect of energy conversion materials, processing and manufacturing these materials.

Book excerpt: Energy conversion techniques are key in power electronics and even more so in renewable energy source systems, which require a large number of converters. Renewable Energy Systems: Advanced Conversion Technologies and Applications describes advanced conversion technologies and provides design examples of converters and inverters for renewable energy systems—including wind turbine and solar panel energy systems. Learn Cutting-Edge Techniques for Converters and Inverters Setting the scene, the book begins with a review of the basics of astronomy and Earth physics. It then systematically introduces more than 200 topologies of advanced converters originally developed by the authors, including 150 updated circuits on modern conversion technologies. It also discusses recently published topologies and thoroughly analyzes new converter circuits. Novel approaches include split-capacitor and split-inductor techniques that can be applied in super-lift and other converters. Resolve Historic Problems in Conversion Technologies Along with offering many cutting-edge techniques, the authors resolve some historic problems, such as the accurate determination of the conduction angle of single-phase rectifiers and power factor correction. They also describe a new series—laddered multilevel inverters—that uses few devices to produce more levels, overcoming the drawbacks of the pulse-width-modulation (PWM) inverter and providing great scope for industrial applications. Tap the Knowledge of Pioneers in the Field This book is written by pioneers in advanced conversion technology who have created a large number of converters, including the world-renowned DC/DC Luo-converters and super-lift Luo-converters. Featuring numerous examples and diagrams, it guides readers in designing advanced converters for use in renewable energy systems.
