Book excerpt: With the large amount of distributed energy resources (DER) being added in distribution networks, protection will become a major challenge due to low fault currents and reverse power flows. Present protection schemes that are based on simple over current philosophy will not be adequate. Advanced protection schemes, which can adapt to the changing system configuration is essential. Time-domain based protection that is independent of fault current magnitudes and direction is proposed to enhance the distribution protection.

Book excerpt: The global concerns over climate change, government policies, and incentives in support of distributed energy resources (DERs) are accelerating the growth of DERs in distribution networks. The growth in DER penetration levels can create various issues such as over/under voltages, reverse power flows, overloading, and protection miscoordination. State-of-the-art grid automation solutions such as advanced distribution management systems (ADMS) and distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS) can leverage the DERs to improve distribution grid operations. The ADMS offers advanced grid management functions such as Volt-VAR optimization (VVO), fault management, and outage management to the distribution operator to improve situational awareness and optimize network operations. The DERMS solutions aggregate the small-scale BTM DERs to provide grid services including demand response, voltage regulation, and situational awareness. In this presentation, distribution grid management approaches in the presence of DERs using ADMS and DERMS will be discussed.

Book excerpt: With the high penetration of inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs), network situational awareness is a challenge for both transmission and distribution (T&D) system operators and planners. It is becoming increasingly important to equip transmission planners with the visibility of DER dynamic performance in distribution systems. Not having visibility of the disconnection of DERs with the occurrence of transmission events, could result in an erroneous view of the stability of bulk power system (BPS). The aggregated distributed energy resource (DER_A) model, developed by EPRI as an addition to the Western Electricity Coordination Council composite load model, is able to model the aggregated dynamic response of inverter-based DERs in distribution circuits. The parameterization of DER_A model requires extensive Monte Carlo dynamic simulations of a large range of highly DER penetrated distribution circuits. These dynamic simulations provided with dynamic voltage responses and parameters of the partial voltage trip characteristic.

Book excerpt: Deregulation of the electric utility industry, environmental concerns associated with traditional fossil fuel-based power plants, volatility of electric energy costs, Federal and State regulatory support of "green" energy, and rapid technological developments all support the growth of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) in electric utility systems and ensure an important role for DERs in the smart grid and other aspects of modern utilities. DERs include distributed generation (DG) systems, such as renewables; controllable loads (also known as demand response); and energy storage systems. This report describes the role of aggregators of DERs in providing optimal services to distribution networks, through DER monitoring and control systems--collectively referred to as a Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS)--and microgrids in various configurations.

Book excerpt: Recent fire-related damages and fatalities caused by high-voltage transmission lines coupled with dry weather are costing billions of dollars annually, with the only practical solution being de-energizing the lines and disrupting the power supply to millions of customers. The recent advances in the distribution grid, including the integration of distributed generation (DGs), distributed energy resources (DERs), and microgrids, provide potential means to improve the grid's operational resilience. An advanced decision-support system is needed to plan and manage grid operations by proactively managing the grid's variable, uncertain, and distributed resources. Consequently, resilient operational solutions for power distribution grids have drawn significant attention. These applications range from leveraging recent advances in smart grid technology, such as remote control capabilities and DER integration, to enabling advanced grid services such as frequency and voltage support for the bulk grid and resilient operations through intentional islanding to support critical services during disruptions. This monograph provides a much-needed primer on optimization methods used in active power distribution systems for advanced operations, with the goal of benefiting researchers working in this field. The graduate students and young researchers working in the area of DERs and distribution systems operations need a background on not only topics related to power distribution engineering but also a wide variety of interdisciplinary subjects to address the upcoming challenges. The monograph will benefit a diverse pool of researchers and industry practitioners by building the necessary background on modeling the distribution systems (with DERs) and system optimization methods for provisioning grid services.

Book excerpt: Americans' safety, productivity, comfort, and convenience depend on the reliable supply of electric power. The electric power system is a complex "cyber-physical" system composed of a network of millions of components spread out across the continent. These components are owned, operated, and regulated by thousands of different entities. Power system operators work hard to assure safe and reliable service, but large outages occasionally happen. Given the nature of the system, there is simply no way that outages can be completely avoided, no matter how much time and money is devoted to such an effort. The system's reliability and resilience can be improved but never made perfect. Thus, system owners, operators, and regulators must prioritize their investments based on potential benefits. Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation's Electricity System focuses on identifying, developing, and implementing strategies to increase the power system's resilience in the face of events that can cause large-area, long-duration outages: blackouts that extend over multiple service areas and last several days or longer. Resilience is not just about lessening the likelihood that these outages will occur. It is also about limiting the scope and impact of outages when they do occur, restoring power rapidly afterwards, and learning from these experiences to better deal with events in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing penetration of distributed energy resource (DER), distributed generation (DG) and energy storage system (ESS) units in distribution grids leads to the emergence of the concepts of active distribution networks (ADNs), microgrids, and virtual power plants. Nowadays, the use of electronically-coupled distributed energy resources is of great interest that can provide the power of demand side alone or in a small electricity grid. A microgrid is a small-scale power grid in low voltage network that must be able to locally solve energy issues and enhance the flexibility and can operate either in grid-connected or islanded/autonomous mode of operation. To study them, researchers need an appropriate set of methods, software tools, analogous to those exist for large interconnected power systems. The book Microgrids and Methods of Analysis addresses systematic analysis, control/protection systems design, and optimal operation of a distribution system under high penetration of DERs analogous to those that exist for large interconnected power systems. - Provides professional guidlines for system planners - Explores further research, development, and optimization of existing and new microgrids - Addresses analytical methods used for microgrid analysis using advanced research
