Book excerpt: This Final Report documents the findings of the Mini-Feasibility Analysis Study (FAS) that is currently being performed for the Advanced Distributed Technology Program 2 (ADST 2) ModSAF Life Cycle Support Delivery Order. This Delivery Order (DO) is being executed in two phases, an analysis phase and an execution phase. The first phase, Analysis, is the initial planning task to support the ModSAF program and transition from the ADST 1 program to the ADST 2 program. The purpose of the Analysis phase is to begin the planning, preparation, and assumption of duties and responsibilities currently performed by the ADST 1 contractor to the ADST 2 team. In addition, the ADST 2 team will provide support to STRICOM in the formulation of the ADST 2 ModSAF software development strategy and development of a comprehensive Life Cycle Support Plan that will provide the necessary plans, schedule, tasks, and resources to support the second phase, Execution. The second phase, Execution, will involve the actual performance of those tasks supporting the ModSAF program.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the lessons that have been learned during the development and operation of the Synthetic Theater of War Architecture (STOW-A) System. This product evolved over a period of more than four years, spanning both the Advanced Distributed Simulation Technology (ADST) 1 and ADST 2 contracts. In 1994, the Synthetic Theater of War Europe (STOW-E) demonstration provided the first step towards integrating virtual, constructive, and live exercise components. The system that resulted from the rapid modification of existing simulations was not designed for the set of problems inherent with exchanging data between dissimilar systems that used different protocols and computed different representations of units and basic loads, different terrain, etc. While the basic concept was proven, the system was not stable and had limited functionality. The first major upgrade to the initial STOW-A system was accomplished to support the Prairie Warrior 93 exercise. The limited virtual simulation and the interface of STOW-B were replaced, and the resulting system proved to be more reliable and extensible, but again the quick turnaround defined by the exercise date limited the ability to design or test the software. Significant improvements were achieved in the correlation of behavior, terrain, and fidelity between the constructive and virtual worlds. User comments and developers' design concepts were collected, correlated, prioritized, and implemented in time for STOWEX 96. Over the next two years, there was sufficient time between exercises to discuss user needs, add functionality, and strengthen stability within the context of improving software design and implementing a controlled test approach.

Book excerpt: The National Research Council's Army Research Laboratory Technical Assessment Board provides biennial assessments of the scientific and technical quality of the research, development, and analysis programs at the Army Research Laboratory, focusing on ballistics sciences, human sciences, information sciences, materials sciences, and mechanical sciences. This interim report summarizes the findings of the Board for the first year of this biennial assessment. During the first year the Board examined the following elements: within ballistic sciences, terminal ballistics; within human sciences, translational neuroscience and soldier simulation and training technology; within information sciences, autonomous systems; and within materials sciences, energy materials and devices, photonic materials and devices, and biomaterials. The review of autonomous systems included examination of the mechanical sciences competency area for autonomous systems. A second, final report will subsume the findings of this interim report and add the findings from the second year of the review, during which the Board will examine additional elements.

Book excerpt: "Soldiers explored a synthetic representation of an Army heliport under three visual display conditions: (1) wide field of view (FOV) helmet mounted display, (2) narrow FOV helmet mounted display, and (3) stationary, wide screen display. Pretest and posttest measures of spatial knowledge were recorded. Measures of presence in the virtual environment were recorded. Measures of simulator sickness were administered upon exit from the virtual environment and 24 hours later. Overall, soldiers acquired a significant amount of spatial knowledge from the synthetic representation. When transferred to the actual Army heliport, soldiers were able to navigate around the location with near zero errors. There was no effect of visual display on any measures of spatial knowledge. Also, there was no effect of visual display on reported presence or simulator sickness. Simulator sickness was significantly reduced after 24 hours away from the virtual environment. Presence did not correlate with spatial knowledge. Simulator sickness correlated negatively with spatial knowledge. Presence and simulator sickness were negatively correlated."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to provide a decision aid that allows engineers, scientists and battle managers to simulate complex situations and facilitate rapid and informed planning. Specifically, we are developing mechanisms to facilitate the decision process in battle management. Often, very large systems may need to be modeled such as an entire combat theater or a large airspace. The problem with large systems is that a single simulation run may take hours to complete. In order to reduce execution time, one can decompose a sequential simulation into a collection of many interacting programs distributed over multiple processors. This approach is called parallel simulation. To ensure correctness, we require that parallel execution generates the same result as a sequential execution. This technology enables off-line decision aid simulations to be transformed into real time decision aids for time critical situations without loss of model accuracy. To build fast, efficient and powerful simulators we need parallel algorithms that: (1) hide computational latencies for image generation in virtual environments, (2) allow effective what if and alternative scenario analysis and decision making in time critical situations, (3) maximize forward progress via background execution, (4) implement interactive visualization techniques that provide insight into parallel simulation execution to prevent potential bottlenecks, and (5) provide for geographically distributed (WAN) environments and exploit the capabilities of high performance interconnections to deliver real time results. To address these issues the development and integration of new mechanisms for interactive parallel discrete event simulations are presented, implemented and evaluated.

Book excerpt: This book responds to an request by the U.S. Army to study the applicability of commercial multimedia technologies to command, control, communications and intelligence needs on future battlefields. After reviewing Army's needs and discussing relevant commercial technologies within the context of a generic architecture, the book recommends approaches for meeting the Army's needs. Battlefield potential is illustrated, andâ€"drawing on lessons learned from the private sectorâ€"a technology management strategy consisting of specific recommendations to the Army is provided. The key to future benefits is for the Army to accommodate the rapid changes taking place in the commercial world of multimedia technologies.
